Welcome!

Dear Festival Enthusiasts,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 10th annual NationalOrchestra Festival, (NOF) sponsored by the Potter Violin Company. The NOF showcases15 spectacular ensembles that represent l3 schools from across the United States. But, before this event begins, our sincere congratulations to all these hard-working groups on accomplishing the feat of participating in ASTA’s premier festival.

The NOF is proud to have some of the nation’s finest music educators as ouradjudicators, performance clinicians, and master class clinicians. Each festival group will receive taped and written comments, as well as a rating by all three concert adjudicators.

At the finish of every concert performance, our highly qualified clinicians will provide each group with a personal clinic focused on enhancing their music-making. ln addition, each orchestra will have the opportunity during the conference to work with master class clinicians. These clinicians have national and international reputations as musicians and teachers. ASTA is committed to delivering the highest artistic and educational experience to its members and their students. We are confident that the 2013 NOF will meet this goal.

For the vast majority of students, teachers, and educators participating in NOF, Ray Charles’ statement about music and it’s profound impact on his life is perhaps, very relevant to all of us:

“I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me-like food or water.”

The students and teachers involved in performing at the NOF are blessed to have this opportunity to discover and present the beauty and excitement of music. Thank you for your devotion to this art, for your preparation and dedication to each other, and, finally, for your performance today. We wish you all the best of success!

Sincerely,Valerie M. PalmieriOrganizing Chair

2014 NHSHO

The next National High School Honors Orchestra (NHSHO) will be held March 5 - 7, 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky, in conjunction with the national conference. The NHSHO is a performing group of 120 competitively selected high school musicians. High school students can now apply directly to the national level using the new online DecisionDesk software that ASTA is utilizing. Students interested in applying need to fill out basic application information and upload the required audition repertoire in audio formats: mp3, ogg, m4a, aiff, wma, wav, aac.

The 2014 NHSHO will be under the direction of Gary Lewis, a strong advocate of music educa-tion, chosen conductor of numerous honors orchestras and all-state orchestras, and a regular presence at the Interlochen Summer Arts Camp for many years. He is in great demand as a clinician, having worked with hundreds of public school ensembles across the nation. ASTA is excited to have him conduct the 2014 NHSHO. Interested students can start preparing by using the repertoire found on the ASTA website. Online submissions are due June 15, 2013. The 2014 NHSHO Concert program will be Symphony no. 5 in D minor, op. 47, by Dmitri Shostakovich. Application and information are now available on ASTA’s website.

DecisionDesk is the new, easy software ASTA is using to collect auditions for the National High School Honors Orchestra.
