ARTIST STATEMENT

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS

Ruth Levine is a Sydney based mixed media and textile artist who is passionate about the exploration of textures and the perception and tactile responses of 3D artwork through the visual transformation of materials.

Better known as the award winning interior designer and director of Ruth Levine Interior Design with over 30 years experience in the world of interior design, Ruth has now transformed her love of textures, fabric and form into sculptural and useable artwork. The artworks exemplify Ruth's design philosophy of balancing the smooth, sleek and perfect with handmade pieces to give the home or interior space a sense of history, heart and is internationally collected.

Ruth’s work has been represented at:• ‘The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize’: ‘Layered Bowl’ selected for this prestigious

exhibition 2010.• ‘Ode to King Billy” (Totems) was judged as Outstanding in ‘Fibre Design for Australia

and New Zealand’ in 2010 by a panel of four judges brought together by Dragon Design + TAFTA.

• ‘Alter Aalto’ bowl was published in ‘The Art of Textiles’ translated into 3 languages and released world-wide 2012.

• Spence + Lyda Sydney ‘Textures, Textiles + Touch’ exhibition 2014.• ‘Arthop’ Sydney 2014, 2015, 2016.

“ROCK PAPER SCISSORS not only represents for me the serendipitous element of art but a representation of the materials used in the artwork itself.

This body of work features a new element to my work of recycling and transforming discarded paper archives into objects of practical beauty. By manipulating the form they appear rock like and become the organic forms I have wanted in my interiors over the years.

The rock also represents my love of disused building materials such as concrete core holes which take on a natural beauty when polished and extended using PET bottles ,canvas and linen, into my mini totem.Each piece holds a story in its form and its surface treatment’‘I continue to explore the parameters of textiles, string and now spent coffee grinds to create wall sculptures and bowls.”

PHOENIX SERIES

The bowls began life as trees, cellulose, paper, documents, archives with a ‘ destroy by date’.Shredded, soaked in water, mulched, mixed with medium then gently moulded into dinosaur egg forms and other organic forms, they begin their new life as Phoenix.

Coming from an earlier background in contemporary landscape abstraction Terri Brooks’ paintings and sculptural paper pieces extend the boundaries of her chosen media.‘My current personal challenge as an artist is to try and make paintings via the most simple means which I hold as a supreme value.

Over time the content of my works has reduced so they are now mostly constructed with fundamental elements including black, white, dot and line and horizontals and verticals. The paintings arise from an intuitive repetitive process of mark making informed by observations of environmental processes, including weathering, ageing and renewal coupled with an inner quest to find new solutions and visual expressions.’

Since 1989, Terri Brooks, PhD, has held over twenty solo exhibitions and numerous group shows nationally and internationally. Her work is in the Neubrandenburg Museum Collection, Germany, The Macquarie Group Collection, Westpac Bank, many other corporate collections, and numerous private collections worldwide. Paintings and paper works have also been selected for projects by leading interior designers and architects for exclusive and award winning interiors.

In Melbourne Brooks is represented by Flinders Lane Gallery.
