LG calls on Civil Aviation MinisterDiscusses important Civil Aviation issues

Port Blair, July 27: Hon’ble Lt Governor, Lt Gen A K Singh(Retd), met Hon’ble Minister of Civil Aviation today and thanked himfor the outstanding support the Islands have received from theMinistry to improve the connectivity to the Islands and between theIslands.

Hon’ble Lt Governor made a request to the Hon’ble Minister toinclude Shibpur and Campbell Bay (being unserved airports) in theRegional Connectivity Scheme. He also requested that the centreshould provide VGF support to the tune of 90 % as is being done forNortheastern States instead of the proposed 80 %. He emphasizedthe geographical remoteness and the concomitant securityimperative attached to these islands for enhanced support. TheMinister was informed of the development works being carried outat Shibpur, Car Nicobar and Campbell Bay airports.

During the meeting the held up work at the Port Blair terminalwas brought up and Chairman, Airport Authority of India informedthat they are seized of the matter and fresh work order could beissued shortly. Hon’ble LG brought out that in the meantime thepresent terminal building should be given a facelift before theoncoming tourist season.

Hon’ble LG brought out the need to continue the CRJ flight viaBhubaneshwar as the same flight goes to Car Nicobar. He wasassured that Air India would be starting flight from 01st October asthe present lease with CRJ is running out. The unstinted effort ofthe administration to get these flights was acknowledged by theministry.

The issue of a larger sized helicopter with 26 passengercapacity was brought out in the meeting. Hon’ble LG emphasizedthat these helicopters are a lifeline of the islands and requested thatPawan Hans should induct a larger helicopter at the earliest forwhich the UT administration was willing to sign an agreement. Healso requested that Pawan Hans should replace their existing fleetwith newer helicopters so that the capacity could be utilizedoptionally. He brought out that due to the ageing fleet of Pawan

Hans helicopters, they are operating below their designatedcapacity.

Any one having any grievance relating to fees structure of anypublic school may submit his/her grievance with complete details tothe Deputy Director Education(Plg)/Member Secretary of theCommittee.

Tree planting ceremony held at District Prison

As a part of 67th Van Mahotsav, 2016 celebration a mass treeplantation was organized by the Prison Department of A&NAdministration, Smti Geeta Rani Verma, Inspector General, Prisonswas the chief Guest on this occasion. She expressed her happinessthat it is heartening to note that even the prisoners are welloriented towards plantation activities, safe guarding theenvironment and conservation issues. About 250 plants of variousindigenous, ornamental, shade providing and fruit bearing treeswere planted all around the road side of New District Prison by theofficials and staff of Prison Department.

The chief guest appreciated the effort of plantation drive ofPrison Department in association with Forests & Extension andPublicity Division of A&N Islands to make pollution free environmentand also encouraged Prison Officials to adopt more eco-friendlymeasures.

Shri Babu Lal Meena (DANICS), Superintendent of Prisonsextended his thanks on behalf of Prison Department to Shri DharmaRao, Forest Ranger and Shri Giri, Forester of Forest & Extension andPublicity Division for their support to make the event as a grandsuccess.

The programme attended by Shri Sanjay Mesheck, Councillorof PBMC, Shri Simon S. Iyer, from an NGO, the APWD Officials andCRPF Officials alongwith Prison Staffs and Prison inmates. Theprogramme was presided by Shri O. Mohammed Haneefa, DeputyJailor and Concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by ShriMohammed Hanif, Jailor of Prison Department.

Photographic exhibition at Gandhi Park

A photographic exhibition on the theme of “Landscape, Floraand Fauna of the islands” is underway in the Art Gallery and Studioset up under the aegis of Kala Kendra at the Gandhi Park premises.A good number of general public visit every day and appreciates theexhibition. The Gallery will remain open for all the art lovers andgeneral public from 4 pm to 8 pm.

Observance of Dengue control month

A meeting was arranged on 27.07.2016 at conference hallof TTI (DIET) with the coordination of UT Health Mission andDirectorate of Health Services on the theme of “The DengueControl everyone’s concern”. Shri Lucas Robert, Principal, TTI(DIET) was the chief guest on the occasion. The programme startedwith the welcome speech and vote of thanks by Shri. L. Suku Rajan,Faculty, DIET.

Shri Subrata Biswas, District Malaria Officer emphasised theimportance of early treatment and vector control for control ofDengue Shri Vara Prasad, Malaria Inspector, Port Blair thanked thepublic for their cooperation in reducing the incidence of Dengue inAndaman. He emphasised that vector control is everyone’sresponsibility. It can easily be achieved if everyone cooperates toprevent water logging. He also stressed the importance of use ofmosquito net especially for fever patients and pregnant mothers toprevent mosquito bite.

ANACS observes Vanmahotsav

As part of the observance of 67th Vanmahotsav, A&N AIDSControl Society (ANACS) organised sapling plantation drive at theoffice campus on 27th July, 2016.

The Project Director, Dr. R.K. Halder, along with all officials ofANACS participated in the drive. Many more saplings will be plantedthroughout the week. Project Director also discussed on the benefitsof plants and trees for the environment.

Voluntary blood donation camp held

A Voluntary Blood Donation Camp (VBD Camp) was facilitatedby A&N AIDS Control Society (ANACS) which was organized bySuba’s Welfare Association with Sailors Union of India, Port Blair atTiranga Park, Aberdeen Bazaar in memory of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalamon 27th July, 2016. In the Camp 40 persons voluntarily donatedBlood.

The VBD Camp was inaugurated by the chief guestSmt Ratna Kannan, ex- Chair-Person, SSWB, in presence of Shri.R. Damodharan, ex-chairman, PBMC, Port Blair. The camp wasconducted under the leadership of Dr. R. K. Halder, Project Director,A&N AIDS Control Society.

The camp was facilitated by Dr. Sahil Seghal, Medical Officer(Blood Bank), G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair. He and his teamensured the proper examination of the donors for their eligibility forblood donation. They also briefed the donors on various aspects andimportance of blood donation.

Lateral entrance test for B. Tech prog on Aug 1

The 3rd selection test for lateral entrance in B. Techprogramme will be held on 01.08.2016 at 3.00 pm. Theunsuccessful candidates who have failed to secure 40% are allowedto attempt the exam.

No hall tickets will be issued, hence candidates are directed tobring valid Photo ID proof along with the registration slip on the dayof exam and be seated half an hour before the commencement ofexams. The qualifying marks in the selection test will be 40% andabove.

PBMC Councillor surrenders air-rifles to Forest dept

In an inspiring response to an appeal made to general publicfor voluntarily surrendering air-rifles which are primarily used forhunting of wild birds in an around Port Blair area. The PRIs wererequested to motivate and mobilized people to restrain from huntingof birds. Shri Sanjay Meshack, Councilor Ward No.23 has mobilizedShri Chaman Lall, R/o Prothrapur and surrendered his air-rifle which

was used for hunting of birds for more than a decade with ShriSuresh Vengappan, Range Officer(Protection). This proactive workto council and motivate people to discontinue the passion forhunting of wild birds by public representative will go long way inconservation of highly endangered and endemic birds of thisemerald Islands. As bird watching is considered to be emergingeconomic activity, conservation of birds will ensure sustainability ineco-tourism sector.

The PRI members and general public are requested to comeforward to join hands with the department in protection andconservation of rare and unique bio-diversity of these Islands bydiscouraging the practice of using air rifles/gun for hunting wildbirds. Further, it is requested to inform about any illegal activitypertaining to Wildlife to the following phone nos.
