Scientists discover extremely powerful black holeNew Delhi: Astronomershave spotted one of the mostpowerful black holes known, according to NASA.

Using Chandra X-ray Obser-vatory and other telescopesthe black hole was discoveredin a galaxy cluster RX J1532located about 3.9 billion lightyears from Earth.

According to scientists, theblack hole has created enor-mous structures in the hot gassurrounding it and preventedtrillions of stars fromforming. The cluster RXJ1532 is very bright in X-raysimplying that it is extremelymassive, with a mass about aquadrillion - a thousand trillion- times that of the Sun.At thecentre of the cluster is a largeelliptical galaxy containing thesupermassive black hole.

The large amount of hot gasnear the centre of the clusterpresents a puzzle, research-ers said.

Hot gas glowing withX-rays should cool, and thedense gas in the center of thecluster should cool the fast-est. The pressure in this coolcentral gas is then expectedto drop, causing gas furtherout to sink in towards the gal-

axy, forming trillions of starsalong the way.

However, astrono-mers have found no such evi-dence for this burst of starsforming at the center of thiscluster.

This problem hasbeen noted in many galaxyclusters but RX J1532 is anextreme case, where the cool-ing of gas should be especiallydramatic because of the highdensity of gas near the cen-ter, researchers said.

Researchers set tofind out what is stopping largenumbers of stars from form-ing in RX J1532 and foundtwo large cavities in the hotgas on either side of the cen-tral galaxy.

The location of thesupermassive black hole be-tween the cavities is strongevidence that the supersonicjets generated by the blackhole have drilled into the hotgas and pushed it aside, form-ing the cavities, researcherssaid.

Shock fronts causedby the expanding cavities andthe release of energy bysound waves reverberatingthrough the hot gas provide asource of heat that preventsmost of the gas from coolingand forming new stars.

The cavities are eachabout 100,000 light yearsacross, roughly equal to thewidth of the Milky Way gal-axy.

Although the energyto power the jets must havebeen generated by matterfalling toward the black hole,no X-ray emission has beendetected from infalling mate-rial.

This result can beexplained if the black hole is"ultramassive" rather thansupermassive, with a massmore than 10 billion times thatof the Sun.

Such a black hole should beable to produce powerful jetswithout consuming largeamounts of mass, resulting invery little radiation from ma-terial falling inwards.

Another possible ex-planation is that the blackhole has a mass only about abillion times that of the Sunbut is spinning extremely rap-idly, researchers said.

Such a black holecan produce more powerfuljets than a slowly spinningblack hole when consumingthe same amount of matter. In both explanations the blackhole is extremely massive, researchers added.

He described the tintas a "weird deep red color, not a Martian kind of red,"which is more of a rusty hue.
