Andrea Balducci is Professor for “Applied Electrochemistry” at the Institute for Technical Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry and at the Center for Energy and Environmental Chemistry Jena (CEEC Jena) of the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena, Germany. He took his degree in Chemistry in 2001 at the University of Bologna (Italy), and his PhD in Materials Science in 2006 at the Paul Sabatier University of Toulouse (France). From 2009 till 2014, he was the scientific leader of the supercapacitors group at MEET Battery Research Center of the University of Münster (Germany). From January 2015 till May 2016 was working as senior scientist at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm (Germany). The research activities of Prof. Balducci are focusing on the development and application of innovative electrolytes for electrochemical energy storage devices. He is working on the identification and chemical-physical characterization of novel electrolytes based on organic solvents and ionic liquids (and their mixtures) for supercapacitor, lithium-ion batteries and, more recently, for sodium-based systems. At the same time, he is intensively investigating the impact of these novel electrolytes on the electrochemical behavior of the active and inactive materials, e.g. current collectors, utilized in these systems. He is member of the advisory board of Electrochimica Acta and he has been the leading organizer and co-organizer of several symposiums dedicated to supercapacitors in the annual meetings of the Electrochemical Society (ECS) and of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE). In 2017 he was the organizer and chair of the 5th International Symposium on Enhanced Electrochemical Capacitors (ISEE Cap 2017), which took place in Jena (Germany). He has been the guest editor of several special issues dedicated to supercapacitors and innovative electrolytes for electrochemical energy storage devices. Andrea Balducci is author/co-author of more than 115 articles in peer-reviewed journals and several patents.
