ngelo State won its fi rst Lone Star Conference title in program history dur-ing the 2013 season. The Rambelles went

7-2-1 in conference play during the season and were the top seed going into the postseason where it hosted the LSC Championship at the ASU Soccer Field. Six players earned postseason awards, including regional awards for Sierra Anderson and Maggie Schaff er. Travis McCorkle has developed a pattern of lead-ing the Angelo State soccer pro-gram to places

its never been before.

A proven winner after six seasons as the head soccer coach at ASU, McCorkle has led the Rambelles to four straight trips to the postseason and five 10-plus win seasons. He directed the program to its first Lone Star Conference Champion-ship in 2013 after guiding the Rambelles to their first NCAA Division II Soccer Tournament in the 2010 season. He was named the LSC's Co-Coach of the Year after the 2013 season where ASU claimed a share of the conference title and were the top seed in the LSC tournament.

A Glenwood Springs, Colo. native, he has guided the Rambelles to a 61-44-11 overall record and a 37-25-7

Lone Star Conference mark at ASU. The program has double-digit win totals in five of his six seasons.

The 2013 season was historic for the ASU soc-cer program as the team claimed its first conference championship since it was started in 1996.

Angelo State set a single-season record for most wins (13) and most confer-ence wins (9) in a season, while clinching their first NCAA berth in 2010 under McCorkle’s leadership. The Belles also earned their first postseason win in program history with a 2-0 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce at the conference tourna-ment in 2010.

A former ASU assistant coach from 2001-02, McCorkle returned to Angelo State in 2008 to become the fourth head coach in Rambelles’ history after Tom Brown accepted the same role at Sam Hous-ton State. McCorkle was an assistant under Brown during the 2001-2002 seasons. Prior to his return to ASU, McCorkle spent five seasons as the head coach at Eastern New Mexico Uni-versity where he was tasked with starting the program.

Shayla Sabin enters her second year as the Angelo State University assistant soccer coach after eight previous years of coaching experiences at the collegiate, club and high school levels.

Sabin, who is a San Clemente, Calif. native, served as the director of operations for women's soccer at the University of Southern California in 2012.

“Shayla was highly recommended from coaches I spoke with during our search,” ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. “Shayla brings a high level of experience which includes working with current members of the US Women's National Team.”

Sabin earned a bachelor's from Cal State Fullerton in kinesiology and was a three-time scholar athlete. Sabin was named the 2007 Big West Goal Keeper of the Year for the Big West Conference and was a fi rst-team all-conference selection. She is second on the career list in the CSUF record books with a 0.90 goals against average and ranks third with a .780 save percentage for her career.

“Having played collegiate soccer at the highest level as well as my experience coaching club and high school for the past six years has prepared me to coach here at ASU,” Sabin said. “I am also looking forward to taking the skills and knowledge I have acquired from managing the soccer program at USC and executing them here as a coach”

While at the University of Southern California her duties included coordinating practice/game times and camp dates as

well as fi lm coordinator for the Trojans. USC won the 2007 NCAA Championship and has made 12 trips to the NCAA tournament.

As co-head coach at San Clemente High School, Sabin helped guide the team to back-to-back league titles and a state title in 2009. During the 2009 season the Tritons were the No. 1 ranked girls soccer team in the nation.

She has worked alongside various soccer greats such as Julie Foudy, Mia Hamm, Joy Fawcett, Cindy Parlow, Lindsey Kelly, Kimberly Pickup and Ian Sawyers. While at USC, Sabin worked with current US Women's National team member Amy Rodriguez.

“In addition to working with our fi eld players, Shayla will work with our goal keepers since she has experience playing the position at Cal State Fullerton,” McCorkle said.

“Throughout the process I've been impressed with Shayla's character and I think she will be a great fi t with our team, ASU and San Angelo.”

Andrew Perez enters his first season as a volunteer assis-tant coach with the Angelo State soccer program.

A San Angelo native, Perez was a four-year letterman for East-ern New Mexico where he was named the Greyhounds captain his junior and senior seasons. He earned Lone Star Conference second-team honors as a senior and was honorable mention during his junior season. Perez graduated from ENMU with a bachelors in Forensic Science

and then earned his master’s degree in Forensic Science from Texas Tech University in 2013.

Perez has gained coaching experience as a temporary assistant coach at ENMU last season for the men’s team. He was also the head coach of the Texas Tech women’s club team while he was pursuing his masters in Lubbock and he was an assistant with the San Angelo Attack soccer club. He also has experience in game day opera-tions from his days in Portales.

Andria Aurand enters her first season as a graduate assistant coach for the Angelo State soccer team following a playing career at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and experience coaching at the high school level.

“I decided to go into coaching because I want to teach/share my knowledge and passion for the game as well as becoming a mentor to others,” Aurand said. “The graduate position here at Angelo State will give me a great opportunity to gain knowledge about recruiting, player management, as well as other administrative duties.”

Aurand, who is a Chattanooga native, played as a defender for the Mocs. During the 2013 season, she started 11 games and assisted on three goals. She earned a Southern Conference Commis-sioner’s Medal for her work on the field and in the classroom. Aurand graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Health and Exercise Science.

She is a Hixson High School graduate where she also played as a midfielder. While at UT-Chatta-nooga, Aurand also worked as an assistant coach for three seasons back at Hixson High. Aurand is pursuing a Master’s of Education: Student Development and Leader-ship at Angelo State University.

Strength and Conditioning

Angelo State student-athletes train in the more than

7,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Junell Center

weight room, which is conveniently located next to

the ASU Soccer locker room in the Junell Center.

Athletic TrainingAt Angelo State, the athletic training staff focuses on helping student-athletes reach

and maintain their best health, achieve conditioning goals, understand best practices to

prevent serious injury and recover fully in a timely manner. Because of this, the university

has developed excellent training and conditioning programs to help prevent injuries

and ensure safe practice and competition habits. If injuries do occur, the department

is equipped and prepared to implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs.

T he ASU Soc-cer Complex is located on the southwest side of campus, on the corner of Victory

Lane and Varsity Lane and has seen improvements come in the form of a new scoreboard and lights in the past two years.

Th e fi eld has a natural grass playing fi eld and practice areas surrounding the fi eld area. Th e game fi eld meets or exceeds every NCAA standard and runs in an east-west direc-tion. Th e fi eld can support three

short-side fi elds for spring practice and 6 vs. 6 or 7 vs. 7 tournament play. Th e fi eld also has portable regulation soccer goals in addi-tion to permanent Kwik Goals.

A concession stand and permanent restroom area, located on the south-west corner of the fi eld, were added for the 2001 season. Th e brick struc-ture, which also has storage and a small athletic training area, is shared with the ASU soft ball program.

Th e fi eld features three sets of por-table aluminum bleachers seating more than 500 ASU fans, with the capacity to bring in more seating for larger games and events. Th e fan seating is located on the south side of the fi eld, with the main public entrance located on the facility’s southeast corner, although there is access on the southwest corner as well. Parking is available on either the east or west side of the fi eld.

A New Look

The ASU Soccer Complex received

a nice new look as a new score-

board was installed in the sum-

mer of 2012 and lights went up

during the 2014 season.

The scoreboard is ASU blue with

yellow lettering. The addition of

lights has allowed ASU to play night

games which benefi ts the student-

athletes and the fan experience.

Since 2002, both the Rambelles and their opponents have utilized locker room facilities in the ASU Junell Center, one of the top athletics venues in all of NCAA Division II.

Complete with a team meeting room and study lounge, the locker room also features oak-trimmed lockers with dressing lights, electrical outlets and seating for each player. An equip-ment storage area and shower facilities are ad-jacent to the dressing areas and just down the hall from the state-of-the-art athletic training rooms.

The study lounge is equipped with video capabilities for watching game film, and there are also Internet hookups so student-athletes can study, complete homework assignments or work on research while waiting for practice. Team and individual awards and trophies accu-mulated by the Rambelles soccer team are also prominently displayed in the locker room area.

From 1965 to 1997, these awards were presented by Nathan’s Jewelers, and asuis immensely grateful to “Babe” Donsky and her late husband Nathan Donsky for their role in founding and sponsoring these awards. Beginning in 1998, Holland’s Jewelry became the sponsor for these prestigious awards.

The Rambelles Are Consistently Earning Academic Awards The ASU Rambelles soccer team also excelled in the classroom in 2013 and was honored with a College Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). It marked the 13th-straight year ASU has received the academic recognition. The annual award is based on the academic performance of a team during the previous academic year. To be eligible, a team must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) for the year. The Rambelles’ 3.56 GPA in 2009 ranked 11th out of the 333 teams to receive the award. It was also the second-highest of the schools honored in the NCAA Division II South Central Region.

All-Time Academic All-LSC Selections The Angelo State women’s soccer team has had a total of 25 selections to the Lone Star Conference All-Academic Teams, including 14 selections over the past seven seasons. Amber Korb and Lauren Carnes are Rambelles who were named three-time selections to the league’s All-Academic Team. ASU has had a total of 27 All-Academic selections in its program's history.

ATHLETIC STUDY CENTERThe goal of the Athletic Study Center is to act as the primary academic support contact for student-athletes. The center holds the offi ce of the Athletic Academic Coordinator (acc) for easy visibility and reach. The center houses laptop comput-ers, printers, and individual and collaborative work stations.

ADVISINGAll academic advising is provided through the individual colleges and academic departments.

ACADEMIC PROGRESSDuring each semester, the accsurveys the professors of each student-athlete three times. In each grade check, professors are asked to provide academic prog-ress information such as atten-dance, current grade, at-risk or not, and any additional comments.

MENTORSHIPThe acc provides weekly sessions with mentors for student-athletes identifi ed as “at-risk” based on acc and coach recommenda-tions. During the sessions, grade updates and upcoming assign-ments are discussed. Assignments are reviewed and study plans are implemented if necessary.

TUTORINGFree tutoring is available for student-athletes in Angelo State University’s Tutor Center. In addi-tion to having tutors available for nearly every general education class as well as many upper-level classes, specialized tutoring units include the Math lab, Writing Cen-ter, Modern Language tutoring, Accounting lab and Supplemental Instruction (si). The si program off ers extracurricular peer tutor-ing groups for traditionally tough classes. Study sessions are led by students who have completed and earned high grades in the courses. si sessions are conducted multiple times throughout the week.

Helping our student-athletes achieve academic success is essential for our program. In addition to

having academic resources within the Athletics Department, our athletes also receive assistance from other programs available to all asu students.

Dom inicThe Angelo State Athletic Foundation is a non-profi t 501-c3 organization whose sole mission is to provide support to Angelo State Athletics. A priority for the Athletic Foundation is scholarship funding above what the University provides to ensure asureaches the maximum equivalencies allowed by

ncaa rules. The Athletic Foundation also provides funding in support of recruiting the next generation of Rams and ’Belles, life skills programming for student-athletes, academic support for student-athletes, and other initiatives important to the welfare of student-athletes and the success of athletic teams.
