 Angels and Demons  Angels & Demons is a 2009 American film adaptationof Dan Brown's novel by the same name. It is the sequelto The Da Vinci Code, even though the novel Angels & 

Demons was published first and takes place before thenovel The Da Vinci Code. Filming took place in Rome,Italy, and the Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City,California. Tom Hanks reprises the lead role of RobertLangdon, while director Ron Howard, producer BrianGrazer, composer HanGoldsman also return.

Plot Under the watchful eyes of Father Silvano Bentivoglioand Dr. Vittoria Vetra, the European Organization forNuclear Research (CERN) initiates the Large Hadron

Collider and captures three vials of antimatter.Immediately afterward, someone kills Father Silvano,and cuts out one of his eyes. The intruder uses the stolenretina to infiltrate the containment chamber, and steal avial. The Roman Catholic Church mourns the death of PopePius XVI in Rome. Vatican City prepares for theCollege of Cardinals' papal conclave, which will selectthe next Pope. Until that time,Camerlengo PatrickMcKenna, a papal court official and

former helicopter pilot, assumestemporary control of the Vatican.Reporters, nuns, priests, and otherfaithful members of the Church crowdinto Saint Peter's Square, waiting for thewhite smoke from the conclave, signalinga successful vote. But the Illuminati, a400-year old, underground secretsociety, kidnap the four most likelycandidates before the conclave entersseclusion. The Illuminati threaten to kill

one every hour, beginning at 8:00 pm,and then destroy the Vatican in a burstof lightat midnight. A stolen security camerashows the missing antimatter vial, whichwill catastrophically explode when thevial's battery dies and the magneticcontainment field fails. The Vatican summons symbologistRobert Langdonfrom Harvard University and VittoriaVetra from CERN to help them solve theIlluminati's threat, save the four preferiti,and replace the vial's batteries. Langdonlistens to the Illuminati message and

deduces that the four cardinals will die atthe four altars of the "Path of Illumination." However, no one knows

Vetra demands that Commander Richter, the commandant of the Swiss Guard, to bringFather Silvano'sdiaries from Switzerland, hoping that they contain the name of the person with whomSilvano discussed theantimatter experiment. Langdon also demands access to the Vatican Secret Archives(something he hasrequested for 10 years) to see the original copy of Galileo Galilei's banned book, whichmay contain thelocations of the four "altars of science." Using the clues from this book, Langdon, Vetra,

Inspector GeneralErnesto Olivetti, and Lieutenant Valenti of the Vatican Gendarmerie Corps race to thefirst church, only tofind the first cardinal, Cardinal Ebner, dead, suffocated with dirt, eaten by rats andbranded with the word"Earth." They verify the second altar's location and arrive, only to witness the death of the second cardinal,Cardinal Lamassé, his lungs punctured and his body branded with the word "Air." WhileVetra studiesSilvano's diaries, Langdon and the Vatican officers locate the third church and try to

save the third cardinal,Cardinal Guidera, from burning to death, but the assassin appears and kills everyone butLangdon andVittoria. The cardinal succumbs to the flames, his body branded with the word "Fire."

After escaping, Langdon convinces two Carabinieri officers to race with him to the lastchurch of the"Water" altar, but the assassin murders them and drops the fourth cardinal, CardinalBaggia, into theFountain of the Four Rivers. However, Langdon saves the cardinal, who tells him thelocation of the

Illuminati's lair: Castel Sant'Angelo. When Langdon and Vetra arrive, they are confrontedby the assassin,who spares their lives since they are not armed and he has not been paid to kill them.He reveals that hiscontractors were from the Catholic Church. The assassin escapes and finds a vehiclecontaining hispayment, but is killed by a car bomb upon starting the engine. Langdon and Vetradiscover that the finalvictim of the plot will be Camerlengo McKenna. After arriving at the Vatican via a secretpassage, they andsome Swiss Guards enter the Camerlengo's office and find him in the floor branded withthe Vatican'ssymbol on his chest and Commander Richter near him with a gun. The Guards promptlykill Richter tosave the camerlengo. During the confusion, the dying commander gives Langdon a keyto his office. Then

the camerlengo, Langdon, Vetra, and the Swiss Guards discover the location of thestolen antimatter vial.

By the time they find it, the battery is about to expire, the deadly explosion just minutesaway. Thecamerlengo seizes the vial and uses a helicopter meant for escape from the Vatican tofly above the church.He then activates the autopilot and escapes with a parachute. After several seconds, the

bomb explodes andthe camerlengo lands, now considered a hero by the crowd and even as the bestcandidate to be the newPope by the College of Cardinals. Meanwhile, Langdon and Vetra use Richter's key towatch a securityvideo showing that the mastermind behind the murders of the original Pope and thepreferiti and theantimatter robbery, in fact, is the camerlengo and not the Illuminati. While Richter triesto arrest McKenna,the priest brands himself with a seal that resembles Saint Peter's upside-downcrucifixion and accuses the

commander being a member of the Illuminati. Langdon shows the video to the College.After thecamerlengo realizes his plot has been uncovered, he immolates himself with oil from oneof the 99 holylamps inside St. Peter's Basilica.

 The Vatican announces that the camerlengo died due to internal wounds suffered duringhis landing, whilethe public demands he be canonized. The College designate the Cardinal Baggia as thenew Pope (who

chooses to take on the name Luke), and Cardinal Strauss as the new camerlengo. Thenew camerlengothanks Robert Langdon for saving the Vatican and the new Pope, and as a mark of hisgratitude loansGalileo's "Diagramma Veritas" to Langdon for his reference. The film ends with the newPope walking outon the balcony to the cheering crowd in St. Peter's Square.
