Supporting studentsYour gift could be made to help the nextgeneration of students, in a way thatmeans most to you. Scholarships are away to provide financial support forstudents in a whole variety of differentcircumstances, be it financial hardship,students from overseas or perhapsstudents who excel at sports or music.

MA Music Therapy student Caroline Swinburn won a scholarship to travel abroad and help patients in a community clinic in South Africa.

World-changing researchOur research at Anglia Ruskin is having a real impact on our world today andwill continue to do so. By supportingthis area, your legacy will help us tomake a lasting difference to the worldand the everyday lives of people whobenefit from our work.

Last year a team of our researchers discovered that as many as 1 in 5 young people in the UK could be the victim of cyber bullying. These findings will help children in the UK to be made safe from harassment and abuse via the internet and mobile phones.

Leaving an unrestricted giftAs we all know, time changes everythingand priorities can shift very quickly. An unrestricted gift will allow us to useyour gift to react to the most pressingissue of the time and help us lead onthe problems that we face in an ever-changing world.

Types of Legacy GiftThere are a number of differenttypes of legacy gift, giving you thechance to leave your gift in a waythat is most convenient to you.

A Residuary GiftThis is given as a percentage or shareof your estate once all specific gifts,debts and expenses have been met. A residuary gift is particularly valuablebecause it maintains ‘real value’ in linewith the rate of inflation.

A Monetary GiftA gift for a specified sum of money. As inflation rises and living costsincrease, monetary gifts are subject to lose value and therefore you maywish to update this gift periodically orconsult your solicitor on ways to protectthe value of a gift of this kind.

A Gift in KindThis is a bequest of particular items orassets that are not in the form ofmoney. This could be property, shares,works of arts or other valuable items.

Inheritance TaxAnglia Ruskin University is anexempt charity and therefore all gifts to our University are treated as charitable gifts for tax purposes.By including a charitable gift inyour Will, you can reduce theinheritance tax payable on yourestate.

Legacy 10As of 6 April 2012, any estate whichleaves at least 10% of its taxable wealthto a charitable cause will be eligible fora reduction in Inheritance Tax from 40%down to 36%. This means that any shareof the estate above the value of the tax-free threshold (2012/13 = £325,000),after all debts and expenses have beenmet, will be subject to the reduced rateof inheritance tax if 10% of that amountis given to a charitable cause.

How to leave a Legacy GiftIt is really quite simple, straightforwardand inexpensive to make a legacygift, either by including it in a newWill or amending an existing Will. No matter how much you are ableto pledge, you can support AngliaRuskin University in a way thatdoesn’t affect your finances duringyour lifetime but will make aprofound difference in the future.

Including a legacy gift in a new WillWe strongly advise that you consult asolicitor when making your Will, butplease see our ‘Suggested Wording’insert at the back of this brochure forguidance on how to include a gift.

Amending an existing Will to include a legacy giftIf you have already made your Will, theeasiest way to include a gift is to use aCodicil Form. Please find our printedCodicil Form at the back of this brochurewhich you can return to your solicitor to add to your Will.
