 Join us for a week of learning and knowledge sharing in Dublin with our local host, ESB International.   

 ASSET MANAGEMENT IN PRACTICE  EuroDoble is a forum for sharing best practices for managing European power stations and industrial sites with learning opportunities for power engineer involved with transmission and distribution, maintenance, protection or asset management.  This year we focus on three important aspects:  

1. The impact of new technologies with the opening address by Denis O’ Leary, Head of Smart Energy Technologies at ESB International. Mr. O’Leary will discuss on‐line monitoring of high voltage equipment and the smart grid.  

2. Managing safety with the Tuesday keynote address from Fergal Keogh, Group Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing at ESB International. Mr. Keogh will speak on ESB International safety policy and strategy. 

3. Secondary systems – what are the performance expectations of these increasingly sophisticated systems?

 CUTTING EDGE TRAINING IN ALL ASPECTS OF TRANSFORMERS  The Life of a Transformer Seminar is three days of in‐depth training on all aspects of transformer design, manufacture, commissioning, operation, maintenance, monitoring, refurbishment and end of life management. Attend the core training track which provides a solid introduction. If you want to delve into a topic, attend the advanced track with workshops for more experienced engineers.  Want to learn more? Attend the optional half day seminar on transformer condition assessment using laboratory diagnostics on Tuesday, October 25th 

 

  Asset and maintenance engineers dealing with power equipment in power stations and substations will greatly benefit from two full days of presentations and discussions with a focus around the aspects relating to managing primary and secondary assets in our ageing power networks, power stations and industrial sites.  MONDAY 24TH OCTOBER CHALLENGES FROM THE FUTURE GRID  The utility environment is becoming more complex with significant challenges being posed by an ageing asset base and complex drivers from business, finance, performance, cost control and regulation. At the asset level, all activities need to be “smarter” regardless how fast an actual “SMART” grid develops.  

TOPIC 1  OPTIMISING MAINTENANCE ACTIVITIES   1.1  Lead presentations will followed by discussions with the audience contributing their experiences   of changes they have implemented to improve asset performance.  

‐ Maintenance strategies: linking tasks to condition and risk, doing what needs to be done ‐ Managing capital reinvestment and whole life costing as part of infrastructure sustainment ‐ Asset management organisation and implementation: processes and systems to implement 

corporate goals at operational levels ‐ Data driven decisions based on sensing, integration, communications, expert systems, 

collection in programs such as CMMS, use of activity based costing, etc ‐ Sustaining resource skill base: outsourcing or in‐house 

1.2  Changing power station maintenance practices reflecting large stations built for base load   generating as required, and/or changing from fossil fuels to burning bio‐mass. 1.3  How maintenance has changed at the MV level with particular regard to switchboards. 1.4  Optimization achieved with development and use of mobile bays up to 220kV.  

TOPIC 2   DEVELOPING THE FUTURE FOR DIAGNOSTICS  There is an increased use of diagnostics to detect the need for maintenance or renewal. Condition indications are the important trigger in both time based and reliability centred maintenance. Obtaining outages is increasingly difficult and leads to greater reliance on routing non‐invasive surveys and in some cases installed systems with remote monitoring. Increased renewables mean multiple switching from both circuit ends risking transient damage. It will also mean greater use of power electronics producing harmonics and transients. Both present threats from aged assets.  2.1  Identifying winding damage at neutral and discontinuity points from increased switching and   power electronic use. 2.2  Experience gained from on‐line monitoring such as gas‐in‐oil and bushing monitors.  2.3  How data is managed using a dedicated server and integrated substation displays. 2.4  The use of UHF, RFI and other methods to detect partial discharge in rotating machines and other   power plant equipment.  TUESDAY 25TH OCTOBER   SAFETY AT WORK  This morning session will focus on safety at work. The basic requirement for most modern utilities is to be able link asset related activities to executive headline objectives on performance, costs, safety and the 

 

environment. Here we will concentrate on what many see as the most important requirement – MANAGING SAFETY.  3.1  Methodologies to identify equipment that may pose potential risks.   3.2  Flashovers in GIS and the technical and safety response to them.  3.3  Safety procedures to be followed when working on site. 3.4  Managing work during an exclusion or risk management zone, including the use of tablets and   mobile phones to access data.  TUESDAY 25TH OCTOBER   CLOSED SESSION FOR UTILITY & INDUSTRIAL GROUPS ONLY  

SHARING EXPERIENCES RELATING TO PLANT PERFORMANCE, FAILURES AND MALFUNCTIONS  Share your learning experience in each of the following areas below. This is an opportunity to describe asset failures and performance issues relating to manufacture. What asset lifetimes do you now ascribe to the service life of each asset type? Special topics for 2016 include:  

1. MV switchgear failures – a review 2. International survey of transformer failures and implications for predicting maintenance and end 

of life timings. Has a wear out/bathtub failure rate been reported or is the failure rate random? 3. Repeatability and variability of diagnostic measurements on equipment tested over decades.

TEST USER GROUPS  Protection testing and primary plant users groups will run and describing test experience with case studies to show successful applications of related diagnostics. This year there will be a focus on on‐line diagnostics and how these have improved asset performance.  

 

 

TUESDAY, 25TH OCTOBER        OIL LAB SEMINAR (OPTIONAL) In power transformers, oil is the largest and one of the most critical components and carries important information about the health of the transformer. Managing the oil and making sense of the important information it contains is an essential part of effective transformer life management. An option half day course will explain how to use oil sample testing to manage your transformers better. Led by Mr. Paul Griffin, Vice President of Global Professional Service at Doble Engineering Company.  

WEDNESDAY, 26TH OCTOBER        PROCUREMENT The life of a transformer begins with procurement. The seminar will begin with three presentations looking at how to get the transformer you need by writing a clear specification, choosing a good supplier, and finally making an effective design review. A clear specification, a good supplier, and an effective design review will ensure that your transformer is ready for many years of trouble‐free operation. Speakers will include Robert Le Roux, a transformer expert with ESB International who has written transformer specifications for customers around the world. His experience in adapting the latest international specifications to local requirements is unmatched.  

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY, 26TH – 27TH OCTOBER  DESIGN & CONSTRUCTION Understanding the detailed design and construction of your transformer is an essential part of transformer life management. This section will be an overview of transformer design and construction with more detail on special types e.g. shunt reactors. There will be special consideration to some of the most important aspects of design and construction today such as losses and efficiency. We will also explain how transformers are tested by the manufacturer to ensure that they are ready for operation. The main speaker on transformer design and construction will be Ronny Mertens, Engineering Manager with CG at Mechelen in Belgium. He will be assisted by a number of other leading aspects on the design and construction of different special types of transformer including Claes Bengtsson, Product Manager for shunt reactors with ABB at Ludvika, Sweden.   

THURSDAY, 27TH OCTOBER         COMPONENTS Power transformers are complex, and include many different components and materials. A good choice of key components will prepare your transformer for a long, trouble‐free life. There will be a focus on three key components – oil, bushings, and on‐load tapchangers. Speakers will include Dr. Peter Smith of Shell on transformer oil, including the latest GTL synthetic oil product, and Mr. Sebastian Rehkopf of MR on on‐load tapchangers. 

 

THURSDAY & FRIDAY, 27TH – 28TH OCTOBER    INSTALLATION, COMMISSIONING,                MAINTENANCE, TROUBLESHOOTING After testing by the manufacturer, your transformer needs to be transported to site, installed and commissioned. After commissioning it will need maintenance. In case of actual or suspected problems, the transformer will need to be investigated and the problems corrected. Speakers for this part of the seminar will be drawn from a range of different industry partners. They will include Elizabeth MacKenzie of Winder Power, who will speak on the subject of maintenance, repair, and refurbishment. They will also include Kamendren Govender of Doble Africa, who will talk about troubleshooting in the field, reflecting on his experience of developing programmes to assist ESKOM with the power crisis in South Africa.  

FRIDAY, 28TH OCTOBER         STRATEGIC LIFE MANAGEMENT The final part of the seminar will focus on getting the best out of the existing fleet of transformers.  Topics will include improving transformer population management, end‐of‐life planning, and transformer disposal. Speakers will include Professor Tony McGrail, currently Solutions Director for Asset Management and Monitoring Technology with Doble Engineering Company, and previously an Asset Manager with National Grid.
