umStatement of NeedPain medicine is a unique branch of medicine that draws expertise from a large number of basic science and clinical disciplines. The knowledge base required for pain medicine board certification and practice is vast and overwhelming for a time constrained physician. Fellowship programs do not uniformly provide balanced exposure to all aspects of pain medicine. Scientific meetings are not geared towards a comprehensive review of the entire field. To fulfill this unmet need, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health faculty in pain medicine have developed a comprehensive pain review course taught by nationally recognized multidisciplinary expert faculty. The 11th Annual Comprehensive Pain Board Review Symposium improves on previous symposia and will be an intensive and up-to-date review of the field of Pain Medicine for physicians and health care providers, especially those seeking pain board certification or recertification in Pain Medicine.

Target AudienceAny physician or health care provider seeking board certification in pain medicine, recertification, or who practice/incorporate pain management in their practice and are interested in expanding their knowledge and skills in the field of pain medicine.

Elements of CompetenceThis CME activity has been designed to change learner competence and focuses on the American Board of Medical Specialties areas of medical knowledge, patient care and procedural skills, interpersonal and communications skills, and professionalism.

Objectives � Review anatomy and physiology of pain pathways in

peripheral and central nervous system � Identify peripheral and central pain mechanisms in acute and

chronic nociceptive and neuropathic pain states � Gain an understanding of basic statistical methods in medical

publications and be able to interpret the results � Describe the pharmacology and clinical applications of opioid

and non opioid analgesics and other drug therapies in acute and chronic pain states and be able to modify treatment in different patient populations

� Evaluate role of electrodiagnostics and imaging techniques in pain management

� Discuss assessment and management of acute/postoperative pain and common chronic pain conditions including musculoskeletal pain disorders

� Describe principles of pain management in special populations

� Describe classification, assessment, and management of headaches, complex regional pain syndrome, and peripheral and central neuropathic pain states

� Review anatomy, indications, and contraindications for regional anesthetic blocks and spinal injections

� Recognize ethical and medico-legal issues related to pain medicine, DEA regulations pertaining to prescribing schedule II and III drugs, record keeping and quality assurance

� Demonstrate competence in assessment of patients with acute, chronic, cancer and end of life pain

� Develop effective communication skills � Devise a multimodality treatment plan incorporating

rehabilitation and behavioral/psychological, interventional treatments
