Never use force. Besides being plain cruel, if a fearful dog is tossed in the water and forced to swim, it can kill his enthusiasm in the future. Allow him time to acclimate to the water gradually..

Use the buddy system. A dog is much more likely to get in the water when he sees another dog already in and having a great time.


Time to SetYour Doggie PaddleThere are few forms of exercise as effective as swimming. It’s completely non-impact, requires the swimmer to use virtually every muscle and joint in the body, and comes with built in resistance to movement. As a result, a 5 minute is

equivalent to a 5 mile run. Unfortunately,

unless you have a swimming pool in your

own backyard, finding a place to safely

swim your dog may be a bit challenging,

but well worth it!

As I sit here watching the miracle of life playing out in the whelping box, I have more questions than answers.....

It amazes me how nature and nurture work hand in hand to allow these puppies to survive.

How does a new mother have the instinct to clean these babies, gently pick them up and despite complete exhaustion not sit or lie on them?

Never having smelled their mother before, how do these blind deaf minutes old puppies manage to seek

out their mother for sustenance?

My babies are safe and warm with a mother who is well fed and yet my thoughts wander to some of the horror stories I hear about, where homeless mother give birth under cars, in shelters and in the wild alone and cold. It breaks my heart and angers my soul that people are not responsible for their animals.

Or worse the people who think they can breed dogs and relinquish all responsibility as soon as they grab the check and those puppies leave the premises.

I watch these babies lie in the whelping box and I can’t help but wonder what will their lives be like? How can anyone watch puppies curled up and cooing in the box and consider turning them into fighting dogs, or bait dogs or even abusing such an animal? What is it in a human that turns them so evil?

For a person such as myself the 9 weeks from conception to birth is

long and fretful and still filled with wonder and amazement. The first few weeks after the breeding, the question of the day is, will we have puppies because despite the millions of unwanted dogs in the country when we want a litter it sometimes doesn’t happen!

My bitches belly starts to swell and my mind turns to all the things that could go wrong during labor. For some reason puppies like to come in the middle of the night when the vet is not available.Another question not answered. Does the cover of darkness make the bitch feel safer delivering her pups?

As delivery day unfolds, the bitch becomes increasingly nervous. With the actual arrival of the first puppies she begins to pant and push and within moments she has delivered a puppy, severed the umbilical cord and eaten the placenta. Nature at it’s best.

When the puppies are all delivered does the mother want to move them away from the birth site because of the scent or does she just want a cleaner area? More questions.

Once the puppies are delivered, the breeders job begins. Neonatal stimulation begins on day three and socializing and stimulation should never stop for these puppies.

AGILITY SUCCESS with “IMPOSSIBLE” DOGS

Do you have a dog or a breed of dog that is not predisposed to work with you?

Have you been to obedience or agility class and been humiliated by how inattentive and wild your dog was? Do you really want to do agility with your dog that you already own and love, but feel like you are getting nowhere and no one knows how to help you? Has it been suggested to you that you should just switch breeds or trade in your dog for a more compliant model? Don’t hand over the leash, just yet. { {

If you were nodding your head when you read the above paragraph, then you and I are kindred spirits. I have two passions in life – Bull Terriers and agility. Unfortu-nately, about the only thing that you can count on from an untrained Bull Terrier is that, the instant you take off the leash, he will run away from you, as far as he can, as fast as he can. This does make it challeng-ing to train them in agility, and no one would have blamed me if I had given up when I discovered this un-encouraging trait. I did not give up, however, because I loved my dogs and saw something in them that told me they were just as smart and capable as their more obedient classmates, if only I could figure out how to get through to them. I stuck with it, soaked up everything I could about dog behavior and dog training, and eventually earned the unimaginable pleasure of putting agility titles on my own little varmints.

I am going to present a series of training articles that show you how to teach your “impossible” dog to do agility. Much of the agility advice you will receive from top instructors will deal with shaving seconds off your dog’s time, or teaching you the best handling system to maximize your dog’s performance. Friends, that stuff just isn’t so helpful when your you’re watching

your dog jump out of the ring and run off so fast that there is a little cloud of dust behind him. What does it matter which cross you put where, if your dog’s nose is glued to the ground at the startline? What do you care about techniques to teach your dog three-second weave poles, when your dog won’t even go in the same quadrant of the ring as the weave poles? Make no mistake, the handling techniques those top train-ers outline generally are brilliant, but you and your dog need to do some background work before those han-dling techniques have any relevance to you. The purpose of my articles will be to help you learn how to train the things you need but won’t get from most training resources.

For this first article, I have adapted a piece from my book, “When Pigs Fly: Training Success With Impossible Dogs.” We will examine what makes a dog challenging to train and present the case in favor of the “impossible” dog. I want to encourage you to look at the positive points of your dog’s personality and understand that, given the right approach, your dog might not be so impossible as you think he is!

YOU CAN DO AGILITY WITH YOUR DOG!The Impossible Dream Consider the following descriptions of

three successful performance dogs. Do any of them resemble your dog?

Dog Number OneDog number one is “The Bolter.” She attends basic obedience class. With one leash correction, she slows down. If the correction is repeated, she stops. If a third try is hazarded, she sits down like a mule and patently refuses to move. When off leash, however, this dog has no trouble moving very rapidly. Un-fortunately, she is gener-ally moving very rapidly in the wrong direction. She does not give a rat’s behind about what her handler wants her to do. It takes a great deal of

sweaty, frustrating, effort just to capture her after she runs off. Sometimes she actu-ally has to be tackled.

Dog Number TwoDog number two is “The Maniac.” He is so highly excitable that his heart literally beats out of control when he is in public. He has to be on beta-blocker medication to (in the words of his vet) “keep him from keeling over.” Even a walk down the street is out of the question. Any time he meets a strange person or dog his heart races, his tongue turns black, and he collapses on the ground. Sometimes his excitement is so great that he vomits and loses control of his bowels. One time he became so over stimulated by a visit from a neighbor that veterinary intervention was required to save his life.

Dog Number ThreeDog number three is “The Dud.” She carefully and precisely follows her handler around – at a walk. Toys, food, praise, and handler gyrations bring absolutely no change in her pace. She has two speeds – dead slow or stopped.

After reading these descriptions, you may find yourself re-reading my first sentence. “Did she say successful performance dogs?” Yes, I did. These are my Bull Ter-

riers, and they all have gone on to great performance careers.

“The Bolter” is Cherry. Shortly after I figured out how to train her, she achieved nine agility titles, with twenty-four first place finishes. Not bad for a dog that pre-viously spent most of her time figuring out how to run away from me.

“The Maniac” is Nicky, who earned his first leg toward an American Kennel Club obedience title at the Bull Terrier Club of America’s National Specialty, going High in Trial. Shortly after that, he completed his AKC Novice Agility Preferred title. That’s a long way from a dog who could not even go out on a leash walk in the neighborhood for fear of dropping dead from the excitement.

“The Dud” is Ruby who, at eighteen months, completed three agility titles. She ran respectably quickly and was as much as 10 seconds under time. Oh, by the way, she was also Winners Bitch at The Bull Terrier Club of America National Spe-cialty that month. In order to beat out the other dogs she had to show like a house on fire for about two hours, and she did. I’d say these are remarkable accomplish-ments for a dog that would almost never

break out of a walk.

WHY DOES MY DOG SEEM HARD TO TRAIN?The Nature of the Pigs Fly Kinda DogLet’s talk about the term “difficult to train.” When we say a dog is difficult to train, part of what we really mean is that the dog is not biddable. Biddable means willing to do your bidding, just because you ask. Bid-dability is something that has been selec-tively bred into certain breeds that need to work closely with humans. Herding breeds need to respond to the shepherd’s com-mands. Gun dogs need to work as a team with the hunter. Terriers need to think on

Before you throw up your hands and say, “Well, there it is. My dog is genetically pro-grammed to ignore me,” consider this: If you were comfortably at home watching TV, and your spouse said, “Go upstairs and pack your suitcase” you would probably say “Why?” If he or she answered, “Be-cause I say so,” you might or might not actually pack your bag, and you would prob-ably be a little resentful about being ordered around that way. Most people would want the courtesy of an explanation. Even if you did pack your bag, you would do so reluctantly. If, instead of, “Because I say so,” he or she said, “We just won the lottery and to celebrate we are going to the French Rivera!” you’d run upstairs right away and pack, wouldn’t you? Well, non-biddable dogs think the same way that you do. Bid-dable dogs would not ask “why?” if they were told to go upstairs and pack their bags, but non-biddable dogs would need more information before they made their choic-es about whether or not to comply with your request. Biddability, then, can be de-fined as removing the “Why?” from the dog’s psyche. The biddable dog never asks why, he just does what you are asking.

So, is it such a big deal if we just have to answer the question “Why?” Why should he sit/stay/walk on loose leash etc? Be-cause you are his master and he is within

BIDDABLE: willing to carry out the wishes of others: amenable, compliant, conformable, docile, obedient, submissive, supple, tractable (Roget’s II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition 1995). These are qualities that have been highly prized by breeders of working dogs throughout the centuries. Careful breeding over thousands of years has cultivat-ed dogs that have an inclination to both work with and take direc-tion from man. If you are reading this book, you probably do not have one of those dogs. If you laughed when you read the definition of biddable you defi-nitely do not have one of those dogs. their own to outsmart and kill vermin…hmm. Sounds like we bred independent thinking instead of biddability into that group.

your dominion and that was the way it went on Lassie? Dream on. Because you are capable of giving him the doggie equivalent of a trip to the French Rivera if he does what you want? Now, your talkin’.

Although lack of biddability is part of what makes your dog different from “easy” breeds, there is more to it than that. Your dog is the dog who asks the questions. He acts like he is deaf when you call him, but he could figure out how to escape from a high security penitentiary if there was something he wanted on the outside. He’s probably inquisitive and on fire to explore the world - always scheming, but never scheming to figure out what you want. While he appears to have no interest in doing anything you want him to do, he is almost obsessive about performing tasks of his own choosing, like chasing squirrels, sniffing, or tearing apart upholstered fur-niture. Although he is affectionate, his agenda does not include doing anything to please you. Far from seeking your approv-al, at times he seems like he revels in the chaos that his disruptive behavior creates – sometimes you have a sneaking suspicion that he thinks it’s funny when you get angry.

How do you describe a dog like that in one word or phrase? Independent? Stubborn? Hard to Train? Challenging? Obsessive? Stupid? Intelligent? These are all value-laden terms that pass judgment on the dog, his attributes, and what he should or should not be able to do. They invite us to draw negative conclusions about the dog because of lack of understanding of dogs and how they think. I don’t believe that using those kinds of words or phrases to describe your dog will further your goal of becoming a happy team with your canine companion. I frequently use the term “Pigs Fly dog” as shorthand for a dog with all of the fabulous (yes, fabulous) qualities I described above. I like “Pigs Fly” because, although these dogs sometimes seem impossible to deal with, in fact they are trainable, even brilliantly trainable. I also use the term non-biddable because, although it is a more limited term, it is an accurate description of the nature of these dogs and cuts to the core of why people have trouble training them. Sometimes I will even use the terms “difficult to train,” “hard to train,” and the like, but they should be taken with a grain of salt. The number one rule for success is to pick out your dog’s strengths and work them to your advantage. I think that it is important you think of your dog in terms of all of his wonderful attributes, and not get caught up in any pre-judgement about what he can or can’t do. Taking away neg-

ative labels and the stigma that goes with them is the first step in opening your mind to the potential in your dog.

Any kind of dog may fall under the Pigs Fly umbrella – purebreds and mixed breeds alike. When I talk about “Border Collies” or “Terriers” or any other breed or group of dog, it is just shorthand for a dog that shares those characteristics, mixed or pure-bred, with or without papers. Most of the Terrier and Hound groups can be classified as Pigs Fly dogs, but there are plenty of other breeds/mixes that can be Pigs Fly dogs, too. Generally, any dog whose origi-nal purpose was to perform a task inde-pendently, without taking direction from, or being in cooperation with, a human teammate is going to be a Pigs Fly kinda dog. If you are in doubt as to your dog’s heritage, but you can’t seem to get him to go along with your plans, he is in the Pigs Fly club.

I spend a lot of time mentoring new Bull Terrier owners. Time and time again, I hear stories about the frustration and discour-agement they experience when they go to training classes with their dog. Seems like a lot of instructors don’t want to be both-ered with dogs that are not “easy” to train. Some instructors flat out recommend get-ting another breed. To me, this is just ter-rible. My dogs had three very different types of problems, but we worked through them, and the joy that I get every time we train or compete is beyond measure. The real reward for me was achieving things and having fun with the dogs that I already loved. I want to make that reward available to anyone who desires it. Far from wanting an “easy” dog, I love my busy terriers whose brains are turning so fast that you can hear the whirling and clicking. I make no apologies for owning a fabulous little dog that is always on the go and obsessed with living life to the hilt, and you should not be making any apologies, either. There is a gold mine of possibilities wait-ing inside of your Pigs Fly kinda dog and I am going to show you how to find it.

RELATIVE “INTELLIGENCE” OF BREEDS:The Learning Curve is not StraightforwardOne of the most fascinating books you can ever read is the American Kennel Club’s The Complete Dog Book (New York: Ballantine

Books, 2006). It contains brief descriptions and histories for the breeds of dog recog-nized by the AKC and one has to be amazed at how we have bred so many breeds of dogs for so many specialized tasks. There are dogs that herd livestock by driving them from behind, and there are dogs that tend livestock by heading them off. There are dogs that will go and fetch a bird without putting a single mark on it, and there are dogs that will destroy any small animal they can find. There are dogs that will diligently and quietly point out where birds are hiding, and there are dogs that will do a crazy dance to draw curious birds within gun range. There are dogs that will guard and let no one near their family (be that family human, dog, or sheep) and dogs that willingly accept han-dling from anyone.

Sit down, because this is going to come as a shock to you. No breed of dog is inher-ently better at learning than any other breed or mix of breeds. That’s right – despite all the flashy behavior that certain breeds of-fer, despite the fact that some breeds of dogs are literally waiting around for you to tell them what to do, they are no quicker to learn than any other dog. That is not just my opinion – Scott and Fuller, in their seminal work “Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog” did extensive ex-periments with Basenjis, Shetland Sheep-dogs, Beagles, Cocker Spaniels, and Wire-Haired Fox Terriers, and all manner of crosses of those breeds. The tests con-sisted of various complicated combinations of obstacles and mazes that the dogs had


to negotiate in order to get to a food reward. Scott and Fuller found that, when it came to problem solving and learning, no breed or cross of breed is quicker to learn than any other is. In their words,

“… (A)ll breeds show about the same average level of performance in problem solving, provided they can be adequately motivated, provided physical differences and handicaps do not affect the tests, and provided interfering emotional reactions such as fear can be eliminated. In short, all the breeds appear quite similar in pure intel-ligence.”

Wait, it gets better. I am going to go out on a limb and guess that people consider a Basenji to be one of the hardest to train dogs, and a Sheltie to be one of the easiest. If you attend obedience or agility trials, you will see lots and lots of Shelties, and pow-erful few Basenjis. Some people will at-tribute this to superior intelligence and learning ability on the part of the Sheltie. Here is what Scott and Fuller found:

“In general, the four hunting breeds (bea-gles, basenjis, terriers, and cockers) per-formed best on the tests. This is probably because most of the tests were deliber-ately designed to test independent capaci-ties motivated by food rewards…By con-trast, the Shetland sheep dogs, whose ancestors have been selected for their abil-ity to perform complex tasks under close direction from their human masters, per-formed rather badly. Indeed, in many of the tests, the shelties gave the subjective impression of waiting around for someone to tell them what to do.” Genetics and the Social Behavior of the Dog, John Paul Scott and John L. Fuller

The Basenji learned faster than the Sheltie. The Sheltie was waiting to be told what to do, and the Basenji was out there figuring it out on his own. So, if the Basenji is just as capable, if not more capable, than the Sheltie of learning, why is it so devilishly hard to get a Basenji to actually do what we want them to do? The answer is that traditional training models were designed with the biddable dog (like the Sheltie) in

mind. Those methods rely heavily on “showing” or “telling” the dog what to do. If you have a dog that is pre-programmed through hundreds or thousands of years of breeding to be receptive to being told what to do, those methods might get you somewhere. If you have a dog that has only ever been bred to think for himself, you will find yourself beating your head against a wall. The problem is not the dog, but the method used to teach him. Instead of com-pelling or showing the dog what you want him to do, you need to learn a system of training that will tap into your dog’s ability to excel at independently motivated prob-lem solving, just like the dogs in Fuller and Scott’s study.

Please note that the fact that the Sheltie was reluctant to problem solve does not mean that the Sheltie was more or less intelligent than the other dogs. It only means that the Sheltie had a natural prefer-ence to be told what to do in that context. I think we must be careful not to ascribe labels like “intelligent” or “unintelligent” to dogs, because the assessment of a dog’s intelligence is going to depend on your preconceived notions of what a dog “should” be. Stick to thinking about what you want your dog to do and the best way to get him to do it. Diagnosing a dog as “intelligent” or “unintelligent” will not further your training program in any way and will only add unnecessary baggage to the process.

OK, now let’s look at your dogs learning strengths and challenges. Your dog may or may not have all of these qualities, but he probably has most of them:

STRENGTHS> He is lively and very interested in his

surroundings.

> He is a good independent worker and problem solver.

> Once he decides he wants something, he is obsessed about getting it and capable of overcoming amazing obstacles to reach his goal.

CHALLENGES> He does not care much if you approve

or disapprove of what he is doing – he has no natural desire to please you.

> He has no natural inclination to pay attention to you

> He is so obsessed with doing his own thing that it is hard or impossible to get him to refocus on the thing you would like him to do.

What you will see is that your dog’s strengths and obstacles are flip sides of the same coin:

> He is lively and interested in his sur-roundings, which means that his whole world does not hinge upon you and whether you approve of him or not.

> He is good at solving problems on his own, therefore he is doesn’t need to pay attention to you much.

> He is capable of great passion and obses-sion with reaching a goal, which is a fabulous thing, so long as your goals and his goals are the same.

Keep these two-sided traits in mind as you train your dog. These are the qualities that made you fall in love with him in the first place, and we are going to respect and cel-ebrate these qualities every step of the way. An exasperating trait always has a flip side – it is the job of a good trainer to find that flip side and use it to his advantage.

You will learn how to take your dog’s natural independence and make it work for you. Rest assured that your dog does have the potential

to become your agility partner – When Pigs Fly!

In Memory of Peggy RudderP R

Peggy purchased her first Dalmatian in 1953 for her step-father as a gift. She chose him because he had the most spots and he became Paul’s Mischievous Bandit, U.D.

In 1955 she purchased a lovely bitch from breeder, Ella Nicola who became CH. Candy Tufts of Dalwood, C.D.X. and the foundation for Dalwood Dalmatians. All dogs with the Dalwood prefix were descendants of Candy, with the exceptions of

Julie and Nikki. Nikki (aka GCH Dalwood’s iPaws Jest in Thyme) was destined to become Peggy’s dog as she has Peggy’s initials (PR) in a spotting pattern on her side

and became her first GCH. Peggy was a vital part of the Dalmatian world for many years, both as a breeder and club member.

She bred and finished many Champions, most notable were Int’l., Mex., Am., World Show Champion, CH Dalwood’s Knight Edition and

Int’l., Mex., Am. Ch. Dalwood’s Knight Traveler, ROM.

She mentored many children in Junior Showmanship, adults and prospective judges about our breed. In the puppy packets she sent home for new owners, the first line was

“I am a Dalwood Dalmatian and I was bred to love you”.

She was the DCA Specialty Chairman in 1990, President of the DCA from 1994-1996, on the board of the DCA, currently on the board of the DCAF, was made an honorary life member

of DCA and served as President of the DCSC numerous years.

Peggy was the epitome of a true southern lady, gracious, kind, and hospitable. Her gentle style made her a favorite of everyone she met.

do my monthly exams and I make sure to get my yearly mammogram, but I wonder how many of us think to check our

bitches? I barely gave it a thought and then a close friends 8 year old bitch was diagnosed with Inflammatory breast cancer two months ago. I mentioned it to my family and their mouths were agape.. Breast cancer in dogs?

I thought it would be good to get the information out there and started the article and then the stupid cancer my brother had been heroically fighting for almost 4 years, took him unexpectedly. I have found it difficult to come back to writing an article about dog cancer after such a personal tragedy. I have made up one excuse after another not to tell the story about breast cancer in dogs because in the scheme of things was it really that important? Then realized that my brother was the sort of person, who would never want to see a dog suffer and maybe some of this information might save a dog’s life.So lets talk about cancer.

Margo is 8 years old. I spent the weekend with her and she was alert active and begging for treats. She had been given a clean bill of health at her annual check up in April. As we packed

to leave on our long drive home we did notice that she was curled up in the dog bed but didn’t give it much thought. Somewhere along the NJ turnpike my friend called to say Margo was running a high temp and was planning to bring her to the emergency vet. We thought perhaps Lyme… but we were wrong. The vet felt a couple of lumps in her groin and made arrangements to see a specialist on Tuesday, by Wednesday they had done radical surgery removing most of the mammary tissue on one side. Biopsies were sent out and the worst diagnosis was presented a week later. Stage 3 Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

The most common type of tumor in bitches is a mammary tumor, especially in unsprayed bitches.

26% of unsprayed bitches develop some form of breast cancer.

Bitches have 3X more risk of developing breast cancer than women, especially in dogs over the age of six.

There has been a significant increase in breast cancer cases in the Sporting Breeds and Poodle’s, Boston’s and Dachshunds are particularly at risk.

Spaying before the first heat reduces the risk to about a 1% chance. After the first heat cycle the risk increases to 8% and after 2 heat cycles the risk stabilizes at 26%. This brings up a dilemma, people are advocating to not spay until a year to ensure growth plate closer but now we are increases the chance of breast cancer.

The symptoms are painless lumps usually closest to the groin. Masses may be large or small, singular or multiple. Some lumps are moveable, some are not. Occasionally the mass ulcerates the skin and produces bleeding. Multiple tumors are common.

The treatment of choice is removing the lump or lumps with adequate margins of normal tissue.

50% of tumors are benign.

The success rate is determined by size of the tumor and whether or not it is malignant.

Diagnosis is done through a needle biopsy, which will tell you whether the tumor is benign or malignant, it can also determine how aggressive surgery should be. The actual tissue biopsy will determine the extent of the disease.

There are many options for treatment including, chemo therapy and radiation. However just as in humans the best course of action is prevention and early detection, so when you do your monthly exams, make sure you are doing your bitches as well.

In loving memory of Bertha Little

1935-2013

Bertha Little was born March 20th,1935 in Saskatchewan then moved to Southern Ontario as a teenager and in 1971

settled in New Brunswick which she considered to be her home.

Bertha could and did accomplish anything she set her mind to do. Her greatest enjoyment during her life was dogs and cats.

In 1972 Bertha purchased her first pure breddog which was a Dalmatian. From there her love of the breed transcended from

pet owner, to breeder, judging and dog showing both here in Canada and the USA.She was a valuable mentor for all new comers to the dog scene and is well known

for her Beachcomber dogs such as Ch. Beachcomber’s Here Comes The Sun,Ch. Beachcomber’s Dolly Parton, Ch. Beachcomber’s Elijah Harper,

Ch. Beachcomber’s Mint Mark, Ch. Beachcomber’s Jacqueline and top winning Am. Can. Ch. Godin’s To Be or Not To Be “Samantha”.

One of her last accomplishments was attaining theposition of number1 Dalmatian in the USA Breed with her most beloved “Daisy”.

Bertha was a lifetime member of the Canadian Kennel ClubNew Brunswick Kennel Club and the Kennebecasis Obedience Club.

She also was the breeder of many good Doberman’s and Tibetian Spaniels.She owned and operated The Paw Shoppe up to her passing.

Bertha will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Carob Dog Biscuits

3C. Whole wheat flour½ C wheat germ2 ½ C Oatmeal1/8 C peanut oil1/8 C Corn oil1TBSP Brown Sugar2 OZ Carob Chips¼ C Molasses1C Water½ C powder3ed Milk

Mix dry ingredients, add remaining ingredients til blended. Dough will be stiff. Roll out to1/2 inch thickness, cut into shapes and bake at 300 degrees fro 1 hour. Makes 2-3 dozen.

Whole Wheat Dog Biscuits2 1/2C Whole wheat flour¼ C whaet germ¼ C milk1 Clove of Garlic4tbsp margarine1 egg beaten1TBSP Molasses

Combine flour, wheat germ and garlic in a large bowl. Cut in the margarine, stir in the beaten egg, molasses and milk.. Add enough water to shape into a ball. Roll out dough to ½ inch thickness, cut into shapes, place on a cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Makes 30 biscuits.

Carrot Crunchies

½ C high quality dog kibble2 C grated carrots½ C applesauce½ plain yogurt2 C all purpose flour1 TSP baking powder

Preheat oven to 400 degreesPut the dog kibble into a food processor and grind to a course flour Should measure ½ after grindingUse a food processor to pure the grated carrotsAdd the applesauce and yogurt to the pureed carrots and mix again until the mixture is a smooth, thick pale orange cream.

Spoon the mixture into a large bowl, add the flour, ground dog food and baking powder. Mix until a dough forms knead well with your hands.

Drop the ball of dough onto a floured board and roll out to a little more than a ¼ inch thickness.

Use a 3” dog bone shaped cutter to make the shapes.Place the cookies on a greased cookie sheet and bake for 10 minutes, flip the cookies and bake another 10 minutes until golden brown. Remove from the oven.

For crispier treats when all the cookies have been baked, turn off the oven. Put all the cookies back on a sheet and return them to the oven. Leave them there for several hours.

Makes 20-30 3 inch long treats.

Microwave Oatmeal Balls

¾ C non fat dry milk½ C Flour, anykind works.1 C quick Oats¼ C flax Seed¼ C Cornmeal2 TBSP beef bullion powder1/3 C melted butter1 Large egg½ C warm water1 C of quick oats for coating the treats

Mix the first 6 ingredients well.Add butter,egg and water and mix until it forms a ball of dough.Spread the second cup of quick oats on a board.Form marble size pieces of dough into balls rolling in the oatsPlace 12 balls on a plate and microwave the plate of treats at 50% power for 4-5 minutes.Remove from the microwave, let cool and store in airtight containers.

I am so proud to announce that E Dalmatians is now going into it’s 7th year of production. I am forever thankful for the support I have received in starting this publication for this wonderful breed andgrateful for the talented team of Designers who have helped make this publication strong for 6 years!

We continue to strive for a timely and beautiful publication that showcases our incredible breed.Last year we were happy to be able to offer the Editions in Hard copy. E Dalmatians was originally designed as an Internet only Publication for on line viewing but when the opportunity came alongto offer it in Print at a reasonable cost to our viewers, we were excited to make that available.

E Dalmatians will continue to be a Bi Monthly publication in 2014. All our Ads are designed in a 2 page “Widescreen” format (equivalent to 2 Ad pages in other publications) giving you more room toshowcase your Dal. You get 2 Ad pages for the cost of one Ad! We publish our Editions within 2 -3 weeks from the deadline so your Ad gets seen in a timely fashion. All AKC judges of Dalmatians are notified of eachnew release for them to view. If you subscribe to our Publication, we will personally send you updates, news and notification of when each new Edition is published. Subscription remains free and you can always see each and every Edition on line 24/7 at no cost.

There has been a lot of discussion with little agreement on social media about what a good/ responsible breeder is. AKC rolled out a Breeder of Merit program a few years ago in an attempt to identify what they thought were good breeders.This conversation got me thinking, the way I see it we have a 2 fold problem; Loss of breed type and a general disinterest in the breed.When we choose to breed we become the keeper of the standard and we should be holding it dear because loss of type means loss of the breed. There are some basics that identify type and they should never be compromised. One of them is movement.

The Dalmatian is a coaching dog bred to cover lots of ground without tiring. Therefore movement has to be correct.I was having a conversation with an Aussie breeder/ judge about their standard. She mentioned that Aussies have a good layback of shoulder. My response was just like a dal. She told me “not the dogs she saw in the ring. Most of them have straight shoul-ders and short upper arms.” So when I attended a judges education seminar and heard the presenter telling these potential judges not to bother looking for a good front be-cause you won’t find one, I was horrified!

Every breed was bred for a specific job, the Dalmatians job was to coach, protect and keep the barns free from rats. The Dalmatian is a distinctly spotted dog, poised and alert, strong, muscular and active. Free of shyness, intelligent in expression, symmetri-cal in outline and without exaggeration or coarseness. The Dalmatian is capable of great endurance combined with a fair about of speed” This first statement in the stan-dard explains what Dalmatian type should be.

Every weekend we see dogs in the ring with bad shoulders, short upper arms, long neck, dogs that paddle, dogs that reach from their elbows, dogs with restricted move-ment, long dogs and over angulated dogs in their rears. These are all dogs that lack breed type...We all have our own ideas of what a good responsible breeder is and does, but a good breeder, breeds for type, and a good breeder reads their standard often.Do you look at breeding co efficients when you put together a pedigree? Or do you choose your stud dog based on wins and rankings?When was the last time you considered dominant & recessive traits before breeding?Did you know that “a reaching gait covering a maximum of ground with a minimum of effort is recessive and dependent on correct angulation?

Did you know that a good layback of shoulder is a recessive trait?

Good breeders know this and use their knowledge to produce sound dogs, and sound dogs exemplify breed type.

Our generation is fortunate to have some health testing available but it is just a small part of our arsenal for good breeders to use. No one starts out with a plan to produce unsound dogs but without learning and understanding basic genetics and researching pedigrees we will produce unsound dogs and dogs lacking in type.

Whether it’s basic dog questions or giving encouragement at a dog show, Good breeders mentor their puppy people.The way I see it, we have a lot of work to do if we expect our breed to survive. We need new people to take over the reigns because let’s face it, we aren’t getting any younger.We need more DCA mentors, one or two per state is not enough. But in the meantime as individuals we can mentor on our own. We can embrace new exhibitors. We can re introduce the public to our breed and show them that Dals are not hyper and are great with kids. We can convince puppy buyers to let their kids try junior show. What par-ent wouldn’t want their kids to learn love and responsibility while keeping them out of the mall and away from the Wii? We can show them how versatile our breed is. We can show them our couch potatoes and our dogs that can jog for hours. We can show them a fabulous medium size dog that sheds less than a golden or a lab.

We all know how great our breed is and it’s time for us, our regional club and our par-ent club to shout from the roof tops what a fabulous breed the Dalmatian can be.

In fact, your puppy will learn more and faster with a two minute training session than he will with a 60 minute training session. Puppies learn most rapidly when given short training sessions with rest periods in- between. This is known as “distributed learning” and the scientific principles behind it work the same for all dogs of all ages, from puppy to senior citizen.

When the puppy’s allowed to rest after a learning ses-sion, his brain has a chance to do some housekeeping.


Think of every response that earns the puppy a reward as a “1”, and every response that does not earn him a reward as a “0”. As the training session progresses, the puppy starts accumulating 1s and 0s in his brain, but things are happening too fast for him to fully sort it out. Much of what he experiences is set aside and spooled in memory, to be fully processed when his brain has the leisure to do so.

When the puppy’s allowed to rest after a learning session, his brain has a chance to do some housekeeping.

THIS IS THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE OLD ADAGE OF “SLEEPING ON IT.” IT MAY SEEM LIKE THE PUPPY READ A TRAINING MANUAL WHILE HE HAS NAPPING, BUT REALLY IT’S JUST HIS BRAIN HAVING A CHANCE TO GET ORGANIZED.

The optimum length of training session and rest period will depend on the age, development, and previous training of the individual dog, but as a guideline we limit our 6 week old puppies to six minutes total training, with approximately a half hour of rest in between. Well, it has been a long hard Winter!It is finally Spring and everyone seems to be coming out of “hibernation”.

Along with Spring comes the Annual DCA National.Folks are getting ready to head up to Portland, Oregon to see old friends, make new ones & show off their treasured Dals! We are happy to be bringing you our Pre National Edition which is chock full of beautiful Dalmatians & just in time to be seen before the National begins.

We continue to strive for a timely and beautiful publication that showcases our incredible breed and is now offered in hard copy as well as in an Electronic format on line.Order your copy & take it with you to this year’s National!

June currently serves as Editor-in-Chief.She has over 15 years of experience in website design and development, electronic publishing and, videography. She has been a professional dog handler for over 25 years handling primarily Dalmatians, but many other breeds too. Her degree is in laboratory technology and is an ex-Navy Chief who served a tour of duty in Saudi Arabi - operation Desert Storm. June and husband Irv are experienced breeders of Dalmatians (25 years) and Bull Terriers (10 years). They have campaigned numerous top winning Dalmatians in the US and abroad, and own/love/cherish the Nation’s #1 Colored Bull Terrier “Fergie” in 2003. They also are principal owners of Show Dog Video Pros, www.showdogvideopros.com

Angie has over 20 years of experience as a graphic designer with a Bachelor’s degree from Missouri State. She is currently Senior Graphic Designer at a large corporation, O’Reilly Auto Parts. She has many years of experience in handling many dog breeds and is a well known Dalmatian breeder under the kennel name of HiSpot Dalmatians. She loves designing for E-Dogs magazines as it brings her hobby and skills together in a very creative way!

Nicole is absolutely thrilled to be designing for the “E Dog” team! Nicole is absolutely thrilled to be designing for the “E Dog” team! Hailing originally from NYC, designing for such companies as Random House Children’s Publishing, Teen Magazine, Yoga Journal and Nickelodeon. Nicole is now a permanent resident of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Linda serves as staff photographer for the EQUIERY Magazine and Official Photographer for the TROT-SAR Search and Rescue Team as well as E Dog Magazines. She specializes in candid photography which caputures the spirits and personalities of dogs and horses (oops don’t forget Lucky the sheep ). Her photos were selected as Grand Prize Winner for Foster and Smith Catalog, Revival Animal Health and 365 Dogs a Day Calendar. She has had Dalmatians for 32 years finishing conformation and performance titles on numerous dogs in AKC, UKC and International venues. Linda has also worked 34 years for the Federal Government as a Firefighter and recently retired from her position in Logistics and Supply Mangement Officer for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (Veterinary Medicine).

Karen was born into a house of dogs. Some of the breeds included Cocker Spaniels, St. Bernards, Irish Wolfhounds and Kerry Blue Terriers. Her true love of Dalmatians didn’t come true until 1981 and she has been an owner, breeder and exhibitor ever since.She is a graduate of Montserrat College of Art with a minor in photography and worked for many years as a senior store executive for a major retailer. After many years Karen has returned to the world of photography where her favorite subjects are her 3 Dalmatians and her garden. She is now the owner of Sit Stay and Play, A Dog Day Care center in Beverly Massachussetts and enjoys writing for E DogMagazines. In her spare time Karen is also an avid equestrian.

For Michele, the Sport of Dogs has become her passion and weekend diversion from the world of High Technology where she has served in various Senior Leadership positions for the past 20 years. Michele was introduced to The Dalmatian breed 16 years ago when her husband decided he wanted a dog that he could take running. By the time they went to pick out their first puppy, they were looking for a show dog. Michele and her husband Tom have bred and exhibited Dalmatians under the SunnyOaks kennel name, producing multiple BISS winners, Group winners, National and Regional Specialty winners, and the 2004 Dalmatian Club of America Top 20 winner who went on to be the #1 Bitch and #3 Dal in 2004 and 2005. Michele has been contributing to E Dog Magazines as a writer for the past few years.

Jane is the author of the best selling “When Pigs Fly: Training Success With Impossible Dogs.”She breeds Bull Terriers and is currently producing a film on puppy rearing and socialization in the critical first twelve weeks of life. Her somewhat paradoxical passions for Bull Terriers (not easy to train) and agility (requires a lot of training) have earned her a PhD inGetting Dogs To Happily Do Stuff They Don’t Naturally Want To Do. She’s been fortunate enough to travel all over the world and present seminars on training “Impossible” dogs, bringing a message to hope to dog owners who are at their wits end.

Size, Proportion, SubstanceDesirable height at the withers is between 19 and 23 inches. Undersize or oversize is a fault. Any dog or bitch over 24 inches at the withers is disqualified. The overall length of the body from the forechest to the buttocks is approximately equal to the height at the withers. The Dalmatian has good substance and is strong and sturdy in bone, but never coarse.

HeadThe head is in balance with the overall dog. It is of fair length and is free of loose skin. The Dalmatian’s ex-pression is alert and intelligent, indicating a stable and outgoing temperament. The eyes are set moderately well apart, are medium sized and somewhat round-ed in appearance, and are set well into the skull. Eye color is brown or blue, or any combination thereof; the darker the better and usually darker in black-spot-ted than in liver-spotted dogs Abnormal position of the eyelids or eyelashes (ectropion, entropion, trichiasis) is a major fault. Incomplete pigmentation of the eye rims is a major fault. The ears are of moderate size, proportionately wide at the base and gradually ta-pering to a rounded tip. They are set rather high, and are carried close to the head, and are thin and fine in texture. When the Dalmatian is alert, the top of the ear is level with the top of the skull and the tip of the ear reaches to the bottom line of the cheek. The top of the skull is flat with a slight vertical furrow and is approximately as wide as it is long. The stop is moder-ately well defined. The cheeks blend smoothly into a powerful muzzle, the top of which is level and paral-lel to the top of the skull. The muzzle and the top of the skull are about equal in length. The nose is com-pletely pigmented on the leather, black in black-spot-ted dogs and brown in liver-spotted dogs. Incomplete nose pigmentation is a major fault. The lips are clean and close fitting. The teeth meet in a scissors bite.

Overshot or undershot bites are disqualifications.

Neck, Topline, Body The neck is nicely arched, fairly long, free from throatiness, and blends smoothly into the shoul-ders. The topline is smooth. The chest is deep, capacious and of moderate width, having good spring of rib without being barrel shaped. The bris-ket reaches to the elbow. The underline of the rib cage curves gradually into a moderate tuck-up. The back is level and strong. The loin is short, muscular and slightly arched. The flanks narrow through the loin. The croup is nearly level with the back. The tail is a natural extension of the topline. It is not

inserted too low down. It is strong at the insertion and tapers to the tip, which reaches to the hock. It is never docked. The tail is carried with a slight upward curve but should never curl over the back. Ring tails and low-set tails are faults.

Forequarters The shoulders are smoothly muscled and well laid back. The upper arm is approximately equal in length to the shoulder blade and joins it at an angle sufficient to insure that the foot falls under the shoulder. The elbows are close to the body. The legs are straight, strong and sturdy in bone. There is

a slight angle at the pastern denoting flexibility.

well defined muscles. The stifle is well bent. The hocks are well let down. When the Dalmatian is standing, the hind legs, viewed from the rear, are parallel to each other from the point of the hock to the heel of the pad. Cowhocks are a major fault-

Feet Feet are very important. Both front and rear feet are round and compact with thick, elastic pads and well arched toes. Flat feet are a major fault. Toe-nails are black and/or white in black- spotted dogs and brown and/or white in liver- spotted dogs.

Dewclaws may be removed.

Coat The coat is short, dense, fine and close fitting. It is neither woolly nor silky. It is sleek, glossy and healthy in appearance.

Color and Markings Color and markings and their overall appearance are very important points to be evaluated. The ground color is pure white. In black-spotted dogs the spots are dense black. In liver-spotted dogs the spots are liver brown. Any color markings other than black or liver are disqualified. Spots are round and well-defined, the more distinct the better. They vary from the size of a dime to the size of a half-dollar. They are pleasingly and evenly distrib-uted. The less the spots intermingle the better. Spots are usually smaller on the head, legs and tail than on the body. Ears are preferably spotted. Tri-color (which occurs rarely in this breed) is a disqualifica-tion. It consists of tan markings found on the head, neck, chest, leg or tail of a black- or liver-spotted dog. Bronzing of black spots, and fading and/or darkening of liver spots due to environmental conditions or normal processes of coat change are not tri-coloration. Patches are a disqualifica-tion. A patch is a solid mass of black or liver hair

containing no white hair. It is appreciably larger than a normal sized spot. Patches are a dense, brilliant color with sharply defined, smooth edges. Patches are present at birth. Large color masses formed by inter-mingled or overlapping spots are not patches. Such masses should indicate individual spots by uneven edges and/or white hairs scattered throughout the mass.

Gait In keeping with the Dalmatian’s historical use as a coach dog, gait and endurance are of great impor-tance. Movement is steady and effortless. Balanced angulation fore and aft combined with powerful mus-cles and good condition produce smooth, efficient action. There is a powerful drive from the rear coor-dinated with extended reach in the front. The topline remains level. Elbows, hocks and feet turn neither in nor out. As the speed of the trot increases, there is a

tendency to single track.

What could be more fun than fire trucks (new and old), kids (of all ages), and spotted dogs on a beautiful May day? Not much! Members of the DCGSL and Spots for Life spent Saturday May 17 at the Museum of Transportation meeting and greeting hundreds of area families and introducing them to our spots. All of our Dalmatians were model citizens accepting many pets and doling out many kisses in return. This is the third year DCGSL has been invited to participate in this very fun event. It’s a terrific opportunity for the public to meet Dalmatians!

The club will host a 50/50 cash raffle and silent auction baskets, which the bidding will close after the specialty show on Saturday. The 50/50 cash raffle with be split between the winning ticket holder and the DCGA. The silent auction proceeds will be applied 50/50 to the DCGA and the DCGA Dalmatian Rescue fund.
