2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

The past year has once again been an exciting one for Athletics NSW (ANSW). One of the highlights has been the hosting in NSW of the National Championships, which produced many outstanding performances with our athletes qualifying for the Rio Olympics and other major competitions. We have welcomed our new CEO, Duncan Tweed along with a lot of change in the office. This has been challenging but the result has been a strengthening of the ANSW team and the opportunity to build on the good work of recent years.

NSW athletes have had an outstanding year. We have seen 15 NSW athletes qualify for the Rio Olympic Games, 18 athletes compete in World Juniors and NSW athletes performed well in the IAAF World Race Walking competitions. The NSW All Schools Championships remains our biggest state event and seems to grow bigger every year. Perhaps the highlight of the year for me was Scott Westcott, the ANSW Recreation Running Manager, qualifying for his first Olympics. Scott exemplifies what our sport is about – dedication, hard work and striving for your goals.

ANSW has seen the recreational running space mature and the 11 events around NSW have now been formed into RunNSW. Participation has been variable as these events find their places in the running calendar. We have seen how attractive the RunNSW series has become with sponsors such as Greater Bank backing the grass roots approach. What has been pleasing was seeing recreational runners now venturing to the track and trying events such as Track Run. This new offering for athletes competing in the winter season brings together the RunNSW events with our other competitions.

In the coming year we are looking to refine the summer athletics program. This is a significant change and no doubt many people will question the strategy. The intention is to grow the participation in track and field so that there are more opportunities for athletes of all levels to compete. We have acknowledged that often the summer competitions such as Treloar Shield are too long and that frequently elite athletes are having their competitions hampered by this. Steps need to be taken to improve these competitions in terms of meet presentation and that we must also recognise the needs of our officials who dedicate their time to support our events.

Our relationship with Little Athletics NSW (LANSW) remains strong and we continue to look for ways to work together. This simply makes sense. I must acknowledge the open and collaborative working relationship with Neil Sandal, Kerry O’Keefe and the Little Athletics board. We are very fortunate that in NSW the ‘One Sport’ vision is shared and genuine. We will jointly host the 2016 State Cross Country Championships and 2016 State Walks Championships.

Athletics Australia has also experienced some significant changes over the past year. New leadership with The Hon. Mark Arbib taking on the chairmanship has brought new ideas and energy to develop

our sport. We welcome this vibrancy. ANSW is working with AA across a number of areas and the consultation with NSW has been good and has extended beyond our board to listen to the athletes, officials and other stakeholders to ensure that the direction for the sport is understood and supported.

The finances of ANSW remain in a good position. The company has managed to return a small surplus that builds the funds available to invest in the future. We hope that in the near future we will have opportunities to apply these funds to ensure a strong future for athletics.

I must acknowledge our generous sponsors and supporters. We especially appreciate the support of Sydney Olympic Park Authority who truly get behind the major athletics events hosted at Olympic Park. The renovation of the two athletics tracks has made our key venue even more attractive. Also, the support of Greater Bank has been exceptional and involves not only sponsorship but also the involvement of Greater Bank staff in RunNSW events. We also thank Accor Hotels, 2XU, H-Events, NSR and King’s Sports Store for their ongoing support.

Thank you to Duncan and the ANSW staff; you have delivered great events over the past year under sometimes difficult circumstances. Thank you to our tireless officials who go above and beyond every week. Finally, thank you to my fellow board members who have provided the strong governance and direction to the sport we love.

2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

2015-2016 has been another successful year for ANSW, building on the strong results achieved in the years with Greg Meagher as CEO. I started with ANSW in October of last year and at the outset I would like to thank Greg for his assistance in introducing me not only to the business but also to some of its characters. Similarly, I would like to thank the Board of ANSW for this wonderful opportunity to help shape the future of athletics in New South Wales.

As we look back on the recently completed summer season, there are numerous high points worth reflecting on:

• Hosting the 94th Australian Athletics Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre was the culmination of the #SUMMERofATHS and the high point of a great season.

• We were able to run the Nationals on a brand new surface. With both the competition track and the warm up track now sporting a new ‘Berlin Blue’ surface, we are fortunate to have the use of what is now indisputably the best facility in Australia for athletics. ANSW remains incredibly grateful to Tony Houhlias and his team at SOPA for their support in making SOPAC what it is.

• 15 athletes from NSW have been selected for the Australian Olympic Team to compete in Rio. Those athletes are: Jenny Blundell (1500m), Milly Clark (Marathon), Josh Clarke (100m), Madeline Hills (5,000m and 3,000m Steeplechase), Michelle Jenneke (100m Hurdles), Fabrice Lapierre (Long Jump), Victoria Mitchell (3,000m Steeplechase), Ella Nelson (200m), Anneliese Rubie (400m, 4x400m relay), Dani Samuels (Discus), Brandon Starc (High Jump), Jessica Thornton (4x400m relay), Eloise Wellings (5,000m and 10,000m), Ben St Lawrence (10,000m), and Scott Westcott (Marathon).

• At the time of writing, four athletes have posted A Qualifiers for the Rio Paralympics. Those athletes are: Rosemary Little (100m), Angela Ballard (100m, 400m, 800m), Kurt Fearnley (1500m, 5000m) and Guy Henly (Discus). Confirmation of Paralympic spots is still yet to be confirmed, however we have some great prospects amongst these four athletes and others.

• The 2015 2XU NSW All Schools Championships retained its status as the biggest secondary school athletics track and field competition in Australia, with more than 1,500 participants. Following this event ANSW sent its largest contingent yet to the National All Schools Championships (237 athletes).

• More than 1,000 ANSW members competed in the 2016 NSW Junior Championships, leading to a state team of just under 500 being assembled for National Juniors in Perth.

All of these fantastic elite performances are underpinned by a foundation within grassroots athletics. The individual ANSW Department reports which follow: Participation, Development, Competition, Community Running and Marketing, demonstrate the infrastructure that ANSW has provided in the past twelve months in its efforts to advance the sport. It is overly simplistic to say that when the grassroots of a sport are strong the elite levels are strong, however everyone involved in the junior development of an athlete, be they a coach, official, parent or training partner, can borrow a little of the lustre when that athlete shines on the elite stage.

Looking forward to the next 12 months, I believe that this will be a critical year in terms of determining the direction of the sport. At the time of writing, Athletics Australia is in the process of finalising its Strategic Vision for Athletics in Australia by 2030 and we expect that this document will promote a more inclusive vision for athletics, which will in turn make our sport more relevant to the average Australian. ANSW has been an active contributor to this process and it is heartening to see the consultation process that AA has undertaken across the nation. In the second half of 2016, ANSW will also be refreshing its Strategic Plan and there will be a similar emphasis on expanding what we here in New South Wales think of as the athletics community. Ultimately, we will be looking to engage with more people on more levels.

While the details of this ANSW strategy are still being developed, some of the initiatives currently being built are markers for the breadth of engagement that we are looking to build:

• Coaching: Until the end of 2015, the administration of the coaching pathway had been left to third parties. We have recognised that it is incumbent upon the governing body to be the leaders in this space and, accordingly, ANSW has invested in a fulltime Coaching and Development Manager, Matt Fowler. The vision in this regard is to become the trusted resource for athletics coaching, where people can come and be sure that the information and education offered is reputable and provided without any other agenda.

• Summer series: This coming summer will see the introduction of ‘ANSW Club hosted’ events, aimed at engaging local communities and building club capabilities. In that regard, I would like to offer my thanks to all of the clubs, officials, coaches and athletes who took part in the recent consultation process. We have already seen some exciting proposals both at the grassroots and performance levels and the ANSW team is looking forward to working with clubs to help deliver some fantastic events.

• Officials: ANSW has provision in this year’s budget for a further resource to assist in the Officials space. There is a commitment to developing the officiating community, focussing on recruitment, training and retention.

• Hunter Regional Development Officer: There is an acknowledgement that the ‘Region of Runners’ does not receive sufficient support from ANSW bearing in mind the depth of the local Hunter athletics community. We will invest in an additional resource in the Hunter, aimed at increasing participation in all levels of the sport.

CEO’S REPORTDuncan Tweed

Page 9: ANNUAL REPORT...• Held senior management and marketing roles with Nestlé, Mars, Commonwealth Bank, Encyclopaedia Britannica and NSW Government; currently lecturing at University

7

• Communications: A key part of engaging with the athletics community is in communicating effectively with our people. Earlier this year ANSW brought on Daniel Laus as its Marketing and Communications Officer and I look forward to continuing to see improvement in the way ANSW communicates with the athletics family.

These initiatives all represent an investment. While I am confident that the investment will bring its own rewards with time, these types of things are not possible without money in the bank. Bearing in mind the financial position of the organisation not so many years ago, it is important to recognise those who have worked hard to ensure that we are in a position today to be able to invest for the future. In that connection, I would like to thank the ANSW partners whose support underpins ANSW’s ability to drive our agenda of growing the sport:

• Athletics Australia• LANSW• Sydney Olympic Park Authority• NSW Government Office of Sport• Greater Bank• Accor Hotels (Novotel Sydney Olympic Park)• King’s Sports Store• 2XU• Lake Macquarie City Council• National Sports Recruitment Australia• NSW Institute of Sport

While supporting the types of initiatives discussed above, ANSW remains committed to the goal of building athletics as ‘One Sport’. We are fortunate here in New South Wales that the Board of Little ANSW thinks similarly and it has been a rewarding experience to work alongside some of the Little Athletics team this year.

Both organisations have jointly commissioned an external consultant to assist in finding ways we can work more closely together and even before this report is finalised the positive work is starting to bear fruit. I am very pleased to be able to say that in June 2016 we will be running the NSW Cross Country Championships and NSW Road Walk Championships in conjunction with LANSW. Congratulations to those who have worked to bring this about; these are important steps in the right direction. We look forward to even closer involvement from and with LANSW in the next 12 months and beyond.

Finally, I would like to thank all of those volunteering to help improve the lot of athletics. Technical officials, club administrators and volunteers are all donating their time and expertise to a sport that they love; the importance of their contribution cannot be overstated. Similarly, my thanks to the ANSW office team, including Andrew Matthews who did a fantastic job as the interim CEO. They have seen many changes over the past twelve months and have faced them all with skill, determination and a genuine desire to deliver the best experience possible for our athletics community. In particular, I would echo the President’s note of congratulation to ANSW’s Recreation Running Manager for his nomination to the Olympic team. For Scott to achieve this milestone while building and managing the RunNSW program on a full time basis is even more impressive.

The purpose of ANSW is to foster the appreciation, enjoyment and development of athletics in NSW. I look forward to working with you all over the next 12 months to build on the foundation that has been laid and to provide a safe, fun and rewarding environment for as many people as possible to walk, run, jump and throw.

2015-2016 saw a renewed focus on community engagement across all pillars of the sport. The participation team focused on product innovation, coach development, inclusive offerings and system alignment.

ANSW has achieved new milestones and progress during 2015-2016 by applying the above focus to the strategic areas of membership, club capability, junior pathways and recreational running at the state and community level.

The strategic direction in the participation space has been to define athletics as a sport for anyone who walks, runs, jumps or throws. ANSW continues to expand traditional track and field events, but has also worked hard to expose the different facets of athletics to new segments of the community. This strategy has seen strong partnerships formed with parkrun Australia, private event management companies, other sporting bodies and regional academies of sport.

One of the great challenges for athletics has been the lack of a seamless pathway across the sport. The 2015-2016 season has seen significant success with greater system alignment and combined initiatives taking place with LANSW, NSW Masters Association and the NSW Professional Track League.

There has been a rapid acceleration of technological advance in society that has changed the behaviour of whole generations and the way people consume products. This is no different in sport. The participation team is continuing to look at innovative and creative products as well as supporting technologies that can further enhance the sport of athletics.

Membership

Membership numbers reached 11,510 in the 2015-2016 year, which is an increase of over 10% on the previous period and a 131% increase in the membership total across the past five years, when taking into account the new registration categories. Members are engaged in the programs, products and services coordinated by ANSW, as part of the network of 92 affiliated clubs across NSW.

The community athlete category continued to grow whilst a remodelled winter membership termed RunNSW, which gives runners access to 11 fun runs and also access to nine traditional events has seen an increase of 25% to date. There was also a strong increase in the Dual Athlete membership along with junior membership, which bodes well for the future of the sport.

ANSW is continuing to look at all of its membership offerings to continue to try and add value to its members and keep up with the changing sports market.

Irun Program

The Irun program is a service ANSW provides in conjunction with Athletics Australia. The program provides insurance and promotional services to event management companies who operate fun runs throughout NSW. The program is a great way for the sport of athletics to collaborate with event directors, and provides a pathway for people involved in recreational running to the sport of athletics. In 2015-2016 there has been an increase from 22 to 38 events, which provides a total of 27,000 extra runners that ANSW can now directly ‘talk to’. It provides the opportunity for ANSW to promote its clubs and services and relevant membership and products that in turn will continue to increase the membership of ANSW.

New Clubs

ANSW has set about increasing its engagement in two significant areas; the growing schools market and the recreational running market. One of the strategies to achieve this is to tailor its affiliation process to encourage and include schools and the recreational running groups to become affiliated and enjoy all the benefits of being a registered club.

This year three new clubs were affiliated with ANSW - Newington, Glenbrook and East Maitland. These clubs provide a great opportunity to expose new communities to the sport of athletics. ANSW is already aware of additional interest from schools and community running groups to form clubs in the next financial year. This is exciting as ANSW continues to expand its footprint.

Club Development

ANSW strategy places strong emphasis on strengthening club capacity as clubs are the cornerstone of the sport and have the greatest impact upon the recruitment and retention of new members. ANSW has aimed to put in place the framework to best allow clubs to recruit and retain members. ANSW also appreciates that club administrators’ time and resources are strained and many administrators are working long hours as volunteers to help grow and develop their local club.

This has resulted in the following initiatives:

• Joint Roadshow – LANSW and ANSW hosted a number of combined club development initiatives called ‘The Athletics Roadshow’. This is aimed at improving club capacity by providing relevant training and innovative skills to clubs in a variety of ways. This included official’s courses, training in the IMG One Sport Technology system, coaching courses, club’s health check and other best practice areas depending on the geographical location. The roadshow went to Armidale, Sydney and Wollongong. This collaboration with LANSW continues to push the ‘One Sport’ values of athletics.

The roadshow put club administrators from both junior and senior clubs in the same room and showed the numerous overlaps both parts of the sport have and provided a tremendous networking opportunity. This saw a number of new relationships formed between LANSW centres and ANSW clubs.

• Online portal – In conjunction with the roadshow and with the goal of trying to assist clubs and minimise their efforts, ANSW developed an online portal which hosts a number of templates and documents for quick and easy reference by clubs. This allows clubs to go online at any time and find information on guides and procedures for events, how to operate the registration platform, sponsorship templates, grant opportunities and more.

• Grants process – This year ANSW worked with a number of clubs to assist in applying for NSW government grants. Six out of the eight clubs were successful. In total the successful clubs received over $25,000 in funding. This money will go directly to help improve facilities and provide valuable technology to help athletics thrive at the grass roots level.

One Sport

ANSW has worked hard on system alignment over the past year. A strategic aim for ANSW has been to provide a seamless pathway for all ages in Athletics. This includes working with the NSW Masters, LANSW and the NSW Professional Track league.

This initiative is in line with the recent Buchanan and Australian Sports Commission (ASC) reports highlighting the need for the whole athletics family to work more effectively together.

• ANSW and LANSW report – ANSW and LANSW conducted a comprehensive report into the club landscape of the two organisations, its members and the movement patterns between the two organisations. The purpose of this report was to provide an evaluation of the current club landscape at both the senior club and LANSW centre level and how the two interacted. There had been little research into ‘club land’ for both associations, with no specific research looking at the relationship between LANSW centres and ANSW clubs. Both associations have spent significant resources assembling a large amount of quantitative and qualitative data, which has underpinned the report.

A number of the recommendations listed in the report have forged a clear direction for further alignment and a couple of areas in the report have already been achieved. This includes the holding of a combined cross country championships and jointly run athletics ‘kids clinics’. This result shows the potential of the report to create immediate change and the appetite within both organisations to see this change succeed.

• NSW Professional Track League – ANSW partnered with NSW Pro League to improve the pathways between these two components of the sport. A number of events were held together with great success. This partnership allowed those who enjoy either athletic product to be exposed to both and shows the many enjoyable aspects that the whole sport has to offer.

ANSW and the NSW Pro League are now exploring dual membership ideas which will continue to provide more competition opportunities in a variety of different forms available for members.

• NSW Masters Association – As a part of a more collaborative approach with the NSW Masters Association, the ANSW Competitions Advisory Panel ,will going forward, include a Masters subcommittee. This will help align the two associations.

Coaching

Prior to the 2015-2016 season, an external provider was responsible for coaching accreditation in NSW. This year, ANSW has developed its coaching policy within a business model, which has financial benefits for our sport, beyond the provision of effective coach education and the integration of coaching with the rest of our sport.

In just under six months, ANSW has achieved a number of important goals:

• Coaching and Development Manager Matt Fowler was appointed to drive coach education and coach development. ANSW has since provided 20 courses and accredited over 160 new coaches in NSW, an increase of 38%.

• Coach development/continuing education for coaches has been facilitated through a new communication called ‘E-coaching’, which goes out to all accredited coaches or those interested. It provides the latest information on areas such as coach interviews, strength and conditioning articles and nutrition.

• ANSW held its first seminar featuring one of Australia’s all-time great distance coaches, Professor Richard Telford. Over 55 people attended. ANSW has another five seminars scheduled for 2016.

• ANSW is aiming to provide all coaches with an opportunity to network and share information with other coaches with a strong emphasis on collaborative learning via a mentoring model.

• ANSW has formed commercial relationships with Athletes Foot, ACPE University and the Department of Education who will all be enrolling students in coaching courses provided by ANSW.

These quick results show our strategic approach to the sport. It has provided better information on a range of markets whilst also producing a commercial return, which can be used to improve coaching.

Analytics and Communication

ANSW is continuing to look at providing better services and information to its members as well as engaging with new audiences which in turn will increase participation in our different products. With this in mind ANSW has looked to remodel its communication mediums and how it talks to its stakeholders.

ANSW invested in Tableau, the analytical software that allows us to better understand our stakeholders. We have since segmented the data in two ways:

• By geographical location - this is broken up into eight segments across NSW

• By interest - i.e. coaches, officials, members, Irun + RunNSW participants, schools

This process ensures the right information is going to the correct demographic to confirm what we are communicating is engaging.

Part of our aim is to provide more information than simply communicating about events or coaching courses. It is about providing engaging content that each market wants to consume.

Innovation through Competition

A new advisory panel, the Participation Advisory Panel, was formed in late 2015 with the aim of looking at innovative products or services that could be offered to increase participation. The panel was a great way to bring together a number of stakeholders within athletics to forge this direction.

The Participation Advisory Panel’s first area of interest was to use the recent research done by the Australian Sports Commission on Megatrends which looked at the changing nature of the way people engage with sport and apply it to the context of athletics. One of these initiatives was a new competition product. The committee put together a plan for continuing to increase participation in traditional athletics through decentralised, innovative and local community level events in athletics. This concept was then taken adopted by the Board and it will be driven by the competition department for the coming summer season.

The Panel also developed the successful TrackRUN series that aimed to bring a number of recreational runners onto the track. The event was supported strongly by parkrun Australia and the first event had 200+ people competing. The concept was then used in Dubbo where the event saw over 78 people participate in a variety of distances; all with the simple concept of bringing recreational fun running to the track.

ANSW Indigenous Program

Over the past two years ANSW has received funding to run an indigenous program called Athletics for the Outback. ANSW travelled to various destinations in NSW including Inner Western Sydney, Wellington, Narromine, Dubbo and surrounds to run athletics within schools. Within each school there were 2-4 visits with each session being held for 1-2 hours.

The sessions included running, jumping and throwing activities along with health promotion. ANSW worked with the National Aboriginal Sporting Chance Academy (NASCA) who helped run these sessions.

ANSW has put together a strategy for 2016/17, which looks to continue to remove key barriers to indigenous participation in athletics. ANSW aims to increase the number of indigenous coaches who would then function as leaders and role models in our program to engage indigenous children and youths with athletics.

The programs will also look to provide subsidies on club membership fees, access to the RunNSW series, coaching clinics, providing fun and engaging camps for indigenous kids to ‘get active’ and also subsidised travel and accommodation to attend ANSW events.

2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

40

The 2015-2016 season saw ANSW host and support some of the most significant events on the athletics calendar. Undoubtedly the feature event of the season was the 2016 Australian Track and Field Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park. ANSW partnered with Athletics Australia to deliver the showcase event that doubled as the selection trials for the Rio Olympic Games. Nine athletes bettered the Olympic qualifying standard, including NSW athletes Dani Samuels, Fabrice Lapierre, Ella Nelson, Madeline Hills and Michelle Jenneke. The event was a resounding success and a great way for the domestic season to come to a close.

Athletics Australia and ANSW once again teamed up to host the Sydney Track Classic in 2016. The Sydney Track Classic is part of the Australian Athletics Tour and featured some of the best athletes from NSW and around the country. It was held on the Saturday night of the NSW Little Athletics State Championships and for the first time featured Little Athletic events in the Sydney Track Classic main program. Two of the feature events were the men’s and women’s 1500m. NSW athletes Ryan Gregson and Heidi See produced excellent performances to win their respective races.

ANSW supported the NSW Masters Association in hosting the 2015 Australian Masters Track and Field Championships. The event attracted over 600 masters aged athletes nationwide and was held over four days at The Crest Athletics Track in Bankstown. The Bankstown Sports Athletics Club also made an outstanding contribution to the successful delivery of the Championships.

The 2015 Sydney:10 also doubled as the Australian Road Race Championships. The fast course, quality fields and grandstand finish at the home of the Sydney Olympics are key features that single out the Sydney:10 as a premier race in Australia.

From October 2015 to March 2016, the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre upgraded the track surface for both the main and warm up arenas. This was done to continue to provide a first class facility to the local athletics community and to suitably stage significant state, national and international level competitions. Upon completion of the works, the track not only looks spectacular but is possibly a faster surface than first anticipated after some of the fast times produced during the Australian Track and Field Championships.

Due to SOPAC being unavailable for an extended period, some premier state championships were held at alternate venues. The NSW 3000m Championships were held at ES Marks in November, the NSW Relay Championships at Blacktown in November, the NSW Club Championships and Combined Event Championships at Bankstown in January and the NSW Country Championships at Campbelltown also in January. The success of these competitions demonstrated the quality of venues outside of SOPAC and the support and dedication of host clubs to meet the expectations of our participating members.

The 2015-2016 season continued the recent trend of increasing participation in key areas:

• Participation in the 2015 Winter Series increased by more than 5.4%. Much of this growth can be attributed to the inclusion of the non-championship races at the NSW Novice Championships into the Winter Premiership and Winter Trophy. The other important growth to note was the increase in participation at the NSW Half Marathon Championships. Participation rose from 82 runners in 2014 to 464 in 2015. This increase was due to a change with ANSW becoming the event host, changing the race venue and including additional races.

COMPETITIONBrent Hayward – Competition Manager

41

• Participation in the 2015 NSW Treloar Shield increased by more than 11% from 2014. The popularity of the Treloar Shield resulted in many rounds stretching the capability of ANSW hosting a very large number of athletes in a Saturday afternoon single venue competition. This has resulted in ANSW considering alternative options for the delivery of club level competition in the 2016/17 season.

The 2015-2016 season included a number of new offerings in the competition space:

• ANSW became sole host of the NSW Half Marathon Championships. The event was rebranded as the Sydney Half and included a half marathon as well as a 7km and 2km race. The venue was moved from Lake Gillawarna to the Sydney Olympic Park precinct. As already outlined these changes resulted in a dramatic increase in participation and has laid a solid platform for future years.

• The inaugural Grass Games was held in partnership with UTS Northern Suburbs. The event was held at Rotary Athletics Field and included a number of features not commonly offered to the athletics community. Races were run clockwise instead of anti clockwise and events included 150m, 300m, 600m, 2 miles, scissors high jump, overhead shot put and the now infamous 400m eliminator. The intention of ANSW is to support events such as the Grass Games, especially at the grass roots level, which have more of an emphasis on variety and fun compared with more traditional track and field events.

• ANSW formed a partnership with the NSW Professional Track League. As part of the agreement pro races were held at AA and ANSW events including the Sydney Track Classic, Hunter Track Classic, NSW 3000m Championships, NSW Treloar Shield and NSW Allcomers. The handicapped races were often a feature event for spectators with some breathtaking come-from-behind finishes.

• The NSW Cross Country Championships were held at a location other than Nowra for the first time in recent years. After a strong application to host the Championships, Kembla Joggers were awarded the hosting rights for the 2015 event. The event was held at the Integral Energy Recreation Park in Brownsville West Dapto and showcased the new multi-million dollar facility. Ordinarily a fast flat course, rain in the lead up to the event made for a wet and muddy course providing a challenging and honest cross country race.

Throughout the 2015-2016 season, positive progress was made on Athletics Australia’s Officials Education Scheme (AAEOS). This scheme aims to merge the qualifications provided through Little Athletics Australia and Athletics Australia into a joint ‘One Sport’ streamlined pathway. Athletics Australia was able to launch the Level 1, 2 and 3 levels and online education.

With online learning, becoming a Level 1 official has now become more accessible and easier to facilitate. It has been used: for high school assignments and in-class learning; for teachers prior to carnivals; for officials wanting to multi-skill; for athletes looking to improve their knowledge or solve ‘where to next’ or for those simply wanting to know more. I encourage anyone who has ever wondered the ‘why?’ to the ‘how?’ of what competition rules are to jump online and spend some time learning.

The NSW Officials Joint Working Party between LANSW and ANSW reflects the commitment from both organisations towards a ‘One Sport’ future. With representatives from both organisations, the working party aims to assist with joint education strategies and opportunities, cohesive strategies towards the implementation of AAEOS, and development and mentoring of officials in NSW.

A challenge currently facing ANSW is the difficulty in sourcing sufficient officials for each event. Much discussion, research and thinking is being placed into this area, with strategies and plans being actioned to help ensure the sufficient provision of officials per meet, without the risk of burnout. We welcome thinking outside the box in how clubs and individuals may assist and share the load. Whether an injured athlete still attends competition, but volunteers; an athlete stays to help officiate after their event or a training squad assists with meet pack up; we openly invite the athletics community to help shape the culture of our sport and be in communication with us about this.

Officials are an integral part of athletics. Their technical abilities, knowledge and skill form the basis for the types of competition presented. With sufficient suitably qualified officials present, clubs and ANSW can hold ‘permit meets’, allowing athletes the ability to qualify for various national and international competitions.

150 officials volunteered for ANSW throughout the 2015-2016 season, and we thank them for their willingness and generosity in giving their time. A big thank you to Don Allen, Marc Ambat, Paul Buckley, Ivan Delaney, David Higgins, Murray Gaudin, Peter Higgins, Rob Jones, Graham Kearns, Terry Manns, Carmel McCudden, David Morrow, Katrina Morrow, John Munro, Garth Pereira, Jeanette Richter, Ron Richter, John Smith, Tony Smyth and Del Warrick who were recognised for having officiated at over 25 meets in the 2015-2016 season. That is an astonishing commitment and we thank them for it.

Our experienced pool of officials has also represented NSW at state and national events. Both the Sydney Track Classic and Hunter Track Classic were supported heavily by NSW officials, as were the prestigious 94th Australian Championships (doubling as Olympic Trials) held at SOPAC in March/April 2016. In total, 89 officials represented NSW at the Track Classics, Australian Juniors and Australian Championships.

Additionally, in an ongoing commitment towards official’s education, development and opportunity, the Athletics NSW/Athletics Victoria Officials Exchange program continued in February 2016. This program aims to expose officials to different styles of competition management, and a new set of athletes and potential issues in competition. Three officials from each state were selected to guest officiate at the other’s Junior State Championships. George Toemoe, Garth Pereira and Marc Ambat represented NSW and positive feedback was received about their competency, versatility and calmness in moments of pressure.

I would also like to thank the members of the Official’s Advisory Panel (OAP), and their two subcommittees; Official’s Appointment’s Panel, and the Retention and Recruitment Subcommittee. These members willingly give their time and energy to represent the officials and provide thought and direction. I am grateful for their knowledge, compassion and humility in working with me on various projects throughout the year, and look forward to what is to come.

Lastly, I would like to thank each of our officials, who constantly demonstrate commitment, dedication and an infectious love for athletics. Thank you for your generosity and patience, and for teaching me gently!

Target Talent Program

The NSW Target Talent Program (TTP) is a development pathway for Junior High Performance, which is integrated within the Athletics Australia High Performance development pathway. The TTP seeks to provide additional education and training opportunities to aspiring junior athletes predominantly throughout the winter months. Following their results of the Australian Junior Championships or upon achieving the qualifying standard set for the program, athletes are invited to attend the program for their event group. This program has been specifically designed to develop not only the athlete, but also the personal coach of the athlete, by fostering a mentoring approach to both parties by the TTP assigned event group coaches. Athletes who excel on this program may also have the opportunity for selection on the Athletics Australia Under 17 or Under 19 developments squads.

This season has seen greater cooperation between ANSW and NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS), and this has resulted in sharing additional intellectual property and provision of resources to assist in the overall training of the TTP athletes. We warmly welcome Michael Perry from NSWIS and know that his vast experience with athletics over many years will contribute to the ongoing success of the program.

Once again, there has been a significant emphasis placed upon education and resourcing, with a solid education series accompanying the ongoing coaching clinics. These education seminars have been designed to not only assist in athlete development, but to assist personal coaches in their own development. It is only through the mutual development of athletes and their personal coaches that the TTP program will be able to achieve its full potential. Once again, we warmly thank Lindsay Watson for sharing his vast knowledge and time to assist with the ongoing development of the program.

ANSW continues to support the Fast Track Program, which has been developed by highly skilled performance coach Mike Hurst. The Fast Track Program looks specifically at the development of speed and endurance for 400m athletes. Weekly sessions are held on Sunday mornings at a variety of venues around Sydney. Athletes on the Fast Track Program were competitors in the 400m, 400m hurdles and 800m races at state and national finals. Another great year for the program, we thank Mike for all his considerable efforts with driving this endeavour.

Para-athlete development has again flourished under the guidance of the Matt Rawlings, with the results of the Para-athletes clearly indicating that we have such a great depth and strong work ethic within the Para ranks. This was greatly evident at the high performance end with some fantastic results at Australian Juniors and numerous other championship events.

It is always a gratifying experience to see members of the TTP program not only achieve beyond their own expectations, but also be recognised for their hard work and dedication.

Coach Education

This year has seen the ground-work laid for a significant increase in the number of coaching courses provided by ANSW, including a large increase in the number of participants attending the courses. It is particularly promising with a noticeable increase in participation rates in higher level education courses; something that has been lacking for a while in coach education in NSW.

A number of these increases can be attributed to a significantly improved marketing approach, clearer and increased communication channels by ANSW and, the appointment of a Coaching and Development Manager at the conclusion of 2015. This allows ANSW to better facilitate the professional development of coaches in NSW, and provide additional support and mentoring for new and experienced coaches alike on completion of the coaching course.

The recent changes by the Australian Sports Commission to the school’s program, moving from the Active After School Care program to the IAAF Sporting Schools has proven a big success, with a number of primary school teachers participating in this program. We also have a large increase in participants on the recreational running courses, indicating that this is a very popular program throughout the ever expanding recreational running community.

After a fair amount of discussion as to the course content and deliverance, the IAAF Level 3 and Level 4 courses are now being delivered in select areas of the nation. These new programs now provide the higher level ‘Performance Coaching’ qualifications which have not been available for some time in Australia, providing a clear pathway for those coaches wishing to further develop their skills and learning potential.

The result of this has been significantly increased course size and content above the Level 1 course and very positive feedback by attendees of the coaching courses.

Australian All Schools Championships, Melbourne

A squad of 237 athletes, which is the largest number of athletes to date in the current format, were selected to attend the Australian All Schools Championships held at Lakeside Stadium, Melbourne. Athletes stayed three nights in the La Trobe University accommodation, with a portion of these athletes being away from home the first time for this period of time. The competition was hard fought, but at the end of the day NSW (910 points) showed its dominance with a comfortable win over QLD (832 points), and just behind them was VIC (807 points). The All Schools is an excellent introduction to the world of high performance athletics, and once again showcased the great quality of junior talent that lies within NSW.

Australian Junior Championships

With the 2016 National Championship held in Perth, the number of athletes that would be attending was an uncertainty. It was a pleasant surprise when just shy of 500 NSW athletes put their hand up to attend. With World Junior positions up for grabs, it was a tremendous competition, which showcased some of the finest junior talent that our country has to offer. It was hard fought in the Under 20 events with World Juniors spots to Poland on offer; we congratulate those athletes who booked their position on the World Juniors squad.

Even in tremendous heat, with days exceeding 40 degrees, there were some fantastic results emanating from the week of competition.

The final tally was 54 Gold, 64 Silver and 62 bronze, an amazing effort.

Para-Athletics

Once again the para-athletes raised the bar at the Australian Juniors, with all attending athletes medalling in at least one of their events, with 19 personal bests and four season bests obtained throughout the meet. Among the achievements were Sarah Walsh, who achieved an Australian and Oceania record in the F44 long jump, and Tasmin Colley broke the Australian T36 100m under 16, 18 and 20 records.

The final tally was eight Gold, seven Silver and nine Bronze, an amazing effort.

2015-2016 ANNUAL REPORT

46

Introduction

2015-2016 has seen another strong year for the RunNSW program and it looks like the 2016 calendar year will be the strongest year yet in terms of participation numbers. Additionally, RunNSW has been fortunate to benefit from a strategic alliance with the Greater Bank; having a naming rights sponsor shows the value that this program is starting to deliver.

The cornerstone of the RunNSW strategy remains to deliver quality running events that are open to all ages and abilities. This year has already seen the addition of two new events in Wollongong and Dubbo and both events have added something new to the program (in Dubbo they even shut down the Newell Highway for the 8km race). The list below summarises the evolution of what is now the RunNSW series with the inaugural year for each event shown:

• 2012 Fernleigh15, Goulburn Fun Run

• 2013 Northparkes Fun Run, Armidale Fun Run

• 2014 Casino Fun Run, Raymond Terrace Fun Run

• 2015 Nowra Fun Run, Sydney Half Marathon

Combined with the flagship Sydney:10 these events offer our members opportunities to be in involved in recreational running throughout the state.

As the RunNSW series matures, our emphasis will be on making the events more than just one off running races. We are looking to do this in a number of different ways:

1. As the definition of athletics broadens to include and engage with recreational runners, ANSW has pioneered a way to integrate its traditional winter events with the RunNSW series. This sees winter members able to enter all RunNSW events for free, a benefit that will be expanded to summer members once the new year of summer memberships open. We believe that ANSW now offers the most valuable recreational running membership in NSW, if not Australia.

2. The RunNSW series provides an opportunity for ANSW to deliver coaching courses in regional NSW to help ensure that the local athletics community is strengthened. In the course of the year the Recreation Running Manager and other accredited instructors have delivered Level 1 Club Coaching as well as Level 2 Recreation Running Coaching courses. Once the Level 1 Recreation Running Coaching course is finalised by Athletics Australia there will be an opportunity to ‘teach the teachers’ at this level.

3. The RunNSW series is an opportunity to add an extra community dimension. We have already partnered with the Greater Bank’s Foundation to try and assist groups such as Camp Quality, while participants in the Sydney Half Marathon this year will be able to raise funds for Parkinson’s NSW. We are thrilled for the RunNSW series to be able to help out in different ways in the community.

In addition, we have been excited to welcome technology partner, Active Network, to the program. This has already meant an improved experience for participants around the registration process (no more long lines to collect race bibs on the day) and we are looking forward to working with Active to make our events even more enjoyable. Ultimately, we want to make sure that everyone has a fantastic time on the day of our events, no matter whether you are trying to finish first or are simply after a fun event to share with friends and family.

There is no doubt that the current climate is a difficult one for the operators of recreational running races. We have even seen some commercial operators cease to offer races this year as the market has become over saturated. In that context the performance of the RunNSW series has been rewarding, not only in terms of the number of race entrants but also in terms of how this program is able to enrich the running community throughout New South Wales.

Dual Membership

The 2015-2016 season saw a steady increase in dual registered athletes who are able to compete in both ANSW and LANSW competitions. Both organisations continue to facilitate the transition and increase the competition opportunities for this age bracket. As results show an increase of 4.8% was recorded this season. Dual registered athlete numbers have now reached 2,300.

This increase has been achieved by:

• Promotion of dual registration at Little Athletics centre level

• Set up of stalls at some key events such as LANSW State Championships

• Engaging with coaches and parents to encourage young athletes to register as Dual Athletes

• Increasing event offerings throughout summer and winter such as the TrackRUNs and RunNSW

There has been a steady progression in dual registration:

• 2014 – 1,600 athletes

• 2015 – 2,100 athletes

• 2016 – 2,300 athletes

Joint Working Party (JWP)

The newly formed committee aims to develop a strategy to move toward a ‘One Sport’ model. As a result both organisations should be very proud with the immediate outcome of hosting a joint 2016 State Cross Country Championships in June 2016. More than 1,000 athletes and a few hundred officials, volunteers and parents will be at the same venue at the same time enjoying a great display of cross country running.

Albie Thomas Mile

The 2016 edition of the Albie Thomas Mile produced the first sub 4-minute mile in the event’s history. Jordan Gusman (ACT) ran an exhilarating race to stop the clock at 3minutes 59.47seconds. The family of Albie Thomas were present on the night and the spectators numbering in the hundreds were buzzing by the achievement of Gusman and proudly applauded his magnificent effort. While the Meet’s core focus is centred on the 4 minute mile, this year’s edition recorded 146 registrations across all disciplines, reflecting a 58% increase in participation from the 2014 event at Bankstown (2015 was held at SOPAC).

The women’s mile once again attracted some high calibre athletes. National 800M champion, Brittany McGowan, made the trip from Queensland; her dominant front running resulted in the win in 4minutes 42.74seconds.

Bankstown Invitational

The Bankstown Invitational, first created in 2013, continues to grow. 2015 saw 188 registrations reflecting growth of 63% with 33.5% of registered athletes being of dual registration status. The meet, being concise in nature, provides both athletes and coaches an amended platform for performance.

The future strategy for this meet is not to encourage mass participation. Its point of difference should lie with it being an impact night and we will continue to make this an engaging event. This could open up possibilities of an integrated night of athletics plus other community interest groups. Races should be of high quality with an aim to deliver excitement and passion for the spectators.

Joint Clinics

September 2015 saw the first joint clinic, conducted by both ANSW and LANSW. This represents a step forward in terms of the ‘One Sport’ philosophy and interest in these events is already strong in 2016.

Assisting Athletics NSW

In addition to the joint projects between the two organisations, the Little Athletics Coaching and Development Officer also provided support to a number of key ANSW events. These events included: Sydney:10, Sydney Half Marathon, Hunter Track Classic, NSW Junior Championships, NSW All Schools and the Olympic Trials.

MARKETINGDaniel Laus - Marketing and Communications Manager

ANSW recorded increased engagement and participation throughout the 2015-2016 year with the RunNSW events continuing to gain momentum with increased numbers. RunNSW participants totalled just over 4,000 with the addition of new events, The Dubbo Fun Run and The Fitness 5. RunNSW provides ANSW with significant opportunity to source new members as well as further opportunities to grow sponsorship, merchandise, clinics and competition events. The community partnerships ANSW is entering into with the Greater Foundation and Parkinson’s only make this proposition stronger.

The marketing strategies and activities continued to support the Four Pillars of the ANSW 2013-2016 Strategic Plan being Participation, High Performance, Competition and Commercial.

Brand

Through continual investment in the ANSW brand there has been an increase in participation in our sport particularly within the recreational segment. The RunNSW brand has grown organically through the fun runs organised by ANSW including the Northparkes Fun Run, Fernleigh15 and Sydney:10. These fun runs have provided ANSW with more opportunity to broaden its appeal to the recreational market and build its stronghold as the leading organiser of all running competitions and funs runs across NSW.

Throughout the year, the ANSW marketing team provided marketing and communications support to ANSW events and programs. Event collateral has been produced for the Hunter Track Classic, Sydney Track Classic, ANSW membership program, Coaching Clinics, ANSW competitions and other development programs.

Continual engagement and content generated from ANSW products and events, in addition to the RunNSW events, assisted in increasing brand awareness among both members and non-members. The ANSW Social Media strategy was focused on delivering relevant and timely content across all channels including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram, which resulted in increased engagement across all platforms.

ANSW Website

The ANSW website has continued to be a constant resource of information and news for members and visitors throughout 2015-2016.

Monthly statistics indicate that the number of unique visitors, visits, page views and new visitors continue to increase each month, with the percentage of sessions (when a user is actively engaged with the website) from new visitors to the site averaging 35% up from last year’s 30%. In 2016, traffic on the site peaked during the National Junior Championships (7 February).

Over the year, most visitors came via desktop 46%, mobile 39% and tablet 15%. The gender split is closing with 49% female and 51% male, while 27% of visitors are in the 45-54 age group, 22% 35-44 and 19% 18-24.

Social Media

Activity on ANSW social media services and pages continues to experience significant growth. The volume of information communicated via social media and the subsequent increase in positive engagement with members has been very noticeable.

ANSW Facebook has grown over the 12 months from 5,700 likes to 8,600 likes with 4 December 2015 posting the highest number of likes on the back of the Australian Athletics Championships where there was a concerted campaign with content and video content broadcast across all platforms.

With Instagram most popular among 18-29 year olds our follows have increased from 2,840 at the same time last year to 5,189. The number of Twitter followers has increased from 2,122 to 2,682.

The ANSW YouTube channel increased in the last year from 439 to 650 subscribers. The uploading of athlete profile videos, race videos, live streaming and post-race interviews on YouTube with links to Facebook and Twitter continues to be very popular with members. In particular, the improvements made to ANSW’s live streaming capabilities will open up further opportunities to bring our community ‘closer to the action’.

Digital Strategy

The ANSW social media platforms of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram continued to gain traction and following throughout the season due to the frequent and regular new content provided by our ANSW writers which is then shared across the channels. Additionally, through the support of Athletics Australia and The Naked Runners we had significant traffic generated for our marquee events including Hunter Track Classic, Sydney Track Classic, Fernleigh15 and Sydney:10. A key part of this, particularly in the Twitter and Instagram space was tagging and engaging our athletes. We continued to build our online fan base and the participation numbers in our RunNSW events would indicate that we are converting segments of our online fan base into new ANSW participants, which is evident through the 4,000 RunNSW participants over the year.

Commercial

ANSW is committed to sourcing and securing additional revenue streams including corporate partnerships, merchandise sales and government funding. We continued our partnership in 2015 with 2XU, which is ANSW’s High Performance Apparel and Compression Partner. This partnership provides our NSW athlete team members and staff with access to 2XU’s highly acclaimed training and recovery apparel.

RunNSW continued its partnership with the Greater Bank as the series naming rights holder and 5km Fun Run sponsor. This strategic partnership enables The Greater Bank to further their reach within regional NSW and to develop the RunNSW brand across communities in NSW to be involved in recreational running and their local running clubs.
