Choice. At first glance, it’s a straightforward word.

Think about it, though, and you realize that each of us is a product of

the choices we make. Our choices personify who we are, and they

determine the quality of our lives. Suddenly, the word “choice” isn’t

straightforward at all.

The truth? Making choices is a gift with strings attached. You get to

be in charge, but you have to face the consequences, too.

Choosing well is difficult, and the process can feel overwhelming.

That’s why The Arc of Baltimore works hard—every day—to help

people with developmental disabilities make informed choices about

all aspects of their lives. We are committed to:

 a. Giving top priority to the preferences, needs and dreams of

those we support.

 b. Employing staff members who go the extra mile.

 c. Working as a team with individuals we support, their families

and the community.

 d. All of the above…and more.

GEORGE JANSSEN is 83, but he is as every bit

as active as someone half his age. That is

precisely the way George likes it.

For many years after he retired, George

lived alone and received 10 hours of weekly

drop-in support from The Arc. It was a

perfect arrangement until his health and

mobility began to decline.

Losing his independence was George’s

biggest fear, so Arc staff spent a lot of time

talking with him. George came to understand

that he could maintain his active lifestyle if he

had additional assistance.

When he was ready, George moved from

his apartment to an Arc house that has full-

time, live-in staff. His house counselor

provided just the right amount of support

with daily living skills to help George sustain

his independence. He helped George adjust to

having roommates, and he made sure George

still had many opportunities to do his favorite

things. Recently, for example, George and a

staff member saw “A High School Musical”

together. And George’s wish to watch the

Orioles play the Yankees during the final

season at historic Yankee Stadium will come

true this summer.

Transitioning to a new stage of life is never

without bumps, but The Arc of Baltimore

made George’s journey smoother by:

 a. Respecting his choices.

 b. Introducing new staff and routines at apace that was comfortable for him.

 c. Ensuring that his health needs weremet.

 d. Developing a broader network ofresources to transport him around town.

 e. All of the above…and more.

“Even though I need more support now, I still want to be very

independent. I want tickets to the Hippodrome and the Baltimore

Symphony, and I want to see Orioles’ and Ravens’ games.”

GREG WILSON loves his job. Policing the

grounds for debris at local businesses satisfies

his desire to work al fresco.

For a long time, Greg’s devoted family felt

uneasy about him having a job outside of the

Rutherford Center’s familiar setting. Staff

members encouraged Greg to speak up for

what he wanted, and they devised a plan that

provided Greg with enough supervision to

reassure his family. Greg remains sensitive to

his loved ones’ concerns. “I do not wander off

and I make sure my supervisor is in my line of

sight.”

Greg works half days, andValerie Towson,

his support person at Rutherford, makes sure

he has a choice of options to fill the remaining

hours. “Greg participates in the center’s read-

ing, math or exercise classes,Valerie explains,

“but usually he looks for a reason to go out. It

might be to feed the mallards down the street

or to accompany a staff member to The Arc

office. The destination doesn’t matter to Greg

as long as he gets to go.”

Spending days as he chooses has enhanced

Greg’s self-esteem, a fact that was obvious to

Arc staff who attended his 50th birthday party

last year. “So many family and friends showed

up,”Greg says proudly. “A lot of people stood

up and said nice things about me. I even gave

a speech.”

Valerie is delighted with how well Greg is

doing. She and her co-workers continue to

assist him by:

 a. Demonstrating appropriate ways tohandle problems.

 b. Encouraging him to forge a strongrelationship with his supervisor.

 c. Providing new opportunities thatcomplement his interests.

 d. Ensuring that he stays attuned to hisfamily’s concerns.

 e. All of the above…and more.

“I want to work outdoors. I always want to go out.

I do not like sitting and doing nothing.”

LINDA DUKE is a devoted mother who felt she

needed guidance to make good choices for her

two adopted children with developmental

disabilities. Linda says she got that help—and

a lot more—from The Arc of Baltimore.

“The Arc taught me how to advocate for

my kids. Staff members Ori Natividad and

Joseph Anastasio have so much information.

They prepared me to deal with special

education schools and IEP meetings. They

showed me how to get results.

“My husband has health issues, and The

Arc has provided financial assistance for

camp, school supplies and clothes. We also get

respite care every other weekend.Without it, I

would not have my sanity.

“So many times, Ori has gone out of her

way for my family. Once, she sat with me at

6 a.m. while my son had three-hour dental

surgery. I didn’t ask her to. She just showed

up.

“Ori knows I’m afraid to drive long

distances, so she dropped off Kera at her

residential summer camp and picked up

Lamont from his. To me, Ori isn’t a staff

person. She’s a friend. I can’t imagine getting

that kind of support anywhere else.”

In fact, Ori is one of many talented staff

members from The Arc’s Family and

Children’s Division. They help countless

parents like Linda keep their families intact

and make informed choices on behalf of their

children by:

 a. Providing information, referrals, workshops, treatment foster care andrespite care.

 b. Showing them how to become effectiveadvocates.

 c. Offering a range of community-basedcamp and recreational activities.

 d. Procuring needed items, from diapersand eyeglasses to toys and adaptiveequipment.

 e. All of the above…and more.

“I want the right school settings for my children.

I need time off from the challenge of raising them.

I need someone to listen to my concerns.”

CHRIS ODLE had definite ideas about how he

wanted to live when it was time for him to

transition out of The Arc’s treatment foster

care program. His first priority: to move into

a house with his foster brother, John.

Staff members from The Arc talked with

Chris about supports he would need to live as

he chose. They introduced Chris and John to

Kenyon, who—like them—worked on

supported employment crews based at the

Seton Center. The three young men spent

time together and, after deciding they would

be compatible roommates, moved in together

last year.

They agree that the arrangement has

worked out beautifully. The friends enjoy

going to the mall, playing video games and

listening to music together. In December, they

took a train toWashington, D.C. to sightsee.

A large calendar helps the young men keep

track of their schedules and follow through

on responsibilities. Assisted by his house

counselor, Ernest Chongo, Chris is expanding

his culinary abilities and learning to stay on

top of his chores. A number of support people

provide transportation when Chris wants to

get together with his girlfriend, and they

accompany him when he visits his biological

mother.

Enabling people like Chris to live as they

choose is all in the details. That includes

helping them:

 a. Furnish their home with things thatreflect their preferences;

 b. Anticipate when chores need to bedone;

 c. Remember to take prescribedmedications;

 d. Maintain open communication withroommates;

 e. All of the above…and more.

“I am happy living in my new home with my foster brother and my

friend. I like to spend time with my girlfriend. I like doing chores.

Sometimes I want to visit my mother.”

“NOTHING ABOUT ME WITHOUT ME” is the principle that guides the way each of us at The

Arc of Baltimore strives—every day—to involve people with developmental disabilities in every

decision that affects them.Their choices, their needs, their goals influence every action we take.

This year, the agency gave individuals more work choices by developing 40 new employment

sites. Additions to our “menu”of community living services are helping more people achieve

their goals. We gave parents a broader resource network to rely on by doubling—and then

some—our in-home supports for children. And we worked proactively with schools to provide

better post-graduation transition resources for parents and students.

Sure, policies are important, but it is the people we employ who make the real difference.

Their value supersedes both the salaries they make and our ability to thank them adequately. To

a person, the Arc’s staff consistently looks beyond what is written on the pages of individual

plans and focuses, instead, on creating opportunities that enable those they support to live as

they choose. Examples include…

 a. Helping a young woman become involved in church activities and get baptized.

 b. Supporting a couple’s desire to get married—and then catering their wedding!

 c. Providing a day center participant with a place to stay until she and her sister could resolvetheir differences and live together again.

 d. Taking people to movies, ballgames and dances so they can socialize with friends.

 e. All of the above…and more.
