Our Year inReview

Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

It has been another exciting and action-packed year at the Day

Home. As you’ll see as you read on, our new playgrounds are

being enjoyed by the children, our new Family Literacy

Program co-directors are on board and local partnerships are

springing up.

As the children grow and learn in a safe, fun, and nurturing

environment, the adults are busy working to move the program

forward. By adults, I mean not only the staff here at Saint

Vincent’s, but also our many friends who volunteer countless

hours of energy and talent. Volunteers help us meet our goal of

providing a home away from home for the children who need

it most. In the 94-year history of the Day Home, volunteer sup-

port has filled in many gaps and made the difference in our

ability to fulfill our mission.

We continue to seek out professional men and women to

work with us to ensure that children are given a quality start in

life, while parents work toward self-sufficiency. There are many

ways to lend a hand, depending on your interest and expertise.

We have standing committees for Board Development,

Building and Maintenance, Development and Events, Family

Literacy and Program and Finance. Committee work can be a

great way to apply your talents, and can also be a good stepping

stone to a Board of Directors position.

If you would like to help us continue to build strong fami-

lies, please take a look at our website to learn more about what

we do and then send us an e-mail at [email protected]. It is

worthy work and we would love to have you join us in it.

Gratefully,

Corinne M. Mohrmann

Here are just a few highlightsfrom our year. To keep currentwith Day Home news, visit ourwebsite at www.svdh.org.

Playtime Just Keeps Getting Better—and Safer Too! After months of arestricted play space for the children, torn up yard and the buzz of construction, our newly renovated playground is open for business and already getting aworkout from the children.

This new play space includes a trike and bikepath, seating areas and work tables, plenty ofshade trees, rubberized safety surfacing andADA accessibility—not to mention some very

cool structures for climbing, sliding and hanging out on. Our heartfelt thanks go to the California Department

of Education, Edward J. Daly Foundation, Rosie’s For All Kids Foundation, Saints & Sinners, the Bernard & Alba WitkinCharitable Trust, and to all of our wonderful individual supporterswho helped make this exciting new playspace a reality.

2005 Annual Golf Tournament a Swinging SuccessThis year’s Golf Tournament and Dinner featuredsome great shots and good fun for all. This eventgrows in popularity every year, and grows in fundsraised as well. Special thanks for making this eventhappen goes to this year’s Event Chairperson, BethRamos. Thanks also to Matt Haley, Erin McGlynn,Annie Appel Ratto, Carol Corrigan and the rest of thecommittee members and volunteers who spent manyhours planning and organizing to make this event asuccess. Most importantly, our heartfelt thanks goesto everyone who came out to play For the Children!

Eight Afghani Educators Visit the Day Home in Effortsto Bridge the Digital Divide As part of our Bridging theDivides literacy program, eight Afghani women visited the DayHome in June. This visit was part of an exchange betweenChico State University, Saint Vincent’s and this delegation fromAfghanistan. The exchange is designed to help us share method-ologies and systems to ensure that all children and adultshave a chance to succeed in life. These Afghani educators areworking to instruct other women in Afghanistan who havebeen denied the opportunity to learn. One of the hopes is thatthese previously uneducated women will be able to teach theirchildren basic skills and get them ready to start school.

Perfect score Saint Vincent’s has once again earned a perfectscore on our Compliance Review by the California Department of Education, Child Development Division. This review happens every three years, and this is the fourth cycle running that we’ve scored 100%.

Family Learning Workshop In August,we held our first Family Learning Programmusic workshop with parents and childrenin the Starfish (Kindergarten) class. Thisworkshop was led by Alisa Peres, whohas been providing music enrichmentprogramming to the children of SaintVincent’s Day Home for many years. Theworkshop was conducted in English and

Spanish, and included reading, music, and move-ment to help parents and guardians understand theimportance and sheer fun of these activities as pre-literacy strategies. Thanks to our relationship

with Barnes and Noblebookstore, we were

able to purchasebooks at a hearty

discount and all parents/guardians received a free copy of thebook The Very Hungry Caterpillar in the language of their

choice. We also sent them home with a full-color songbook to share with their children.

A Visit to Barnes and NobleIn July, our Livewires (first through 4th graders) took a field trip to the Barnes & Noble bookstore at JackLondon Square, where they attended story hour.Barnes and Noble then presented the children with

gifts—including some very cool Harry Potter specs. Read about the Voucher Book Fair on the back page of this report.

The Day Home Welcomes New Program Co-Directors Amy Prevedel and Shree Ram

In our continuing efforts to Bridge theDivides, the Day Home welcomes newFamily Learning Program Co-Directors

Amy Prevedel and Shree Ram. Amy and Shree joined this excitingeffort during the summer and are already off and running with theprogram.

Both Amy and Shree come to the DayHome with extensive experience in thefield of family learning and literacy. Amyhas focused on library-based adult andfamily literacy programs for the past 10years, and has worked on projects with theNational Institute of Literacy and theCenter for Family Literacy. She holds aMasters in Adult Education, and most recently coordinated TheBerkeley Reads program at the public library (Berkeley adult literacy program).

Shree holds a Masters degree inEducation and is particularly interested in education and social services in urban,under-resourced communities. Shree has a wealth of experience in adult literacy andnew program implementation. She workedwith Amy at the Blue Gargoyle AdultLearning Program in Chicago, ultimatelyassuming directorship of the program.

Laying the Groundwork for Family Literacy

To get things moving, parents and adults were surveyed aboutwhat they want in the areas of reading, writing, computer, mathskills, and parenting topics. Teachers were also interviewed to gettheir observations on what types of programs might be most use-ful to our parents. This direct feedback will help Amy and Shreedevelop and deliver literacy programs tailored to our parents’needs.

Already, the program has delivered two workshops: a familymusic workshop (read more about this in Our Year in Review),and an Internet workshop designed for adults who have very littleexperience accessing the web.

As the program evolves, Amy and Shree will be looking to iden-tify resources and opportunities in the community that complementthe Day Home’s services. They are already working closely withthe children’s librarian at the West Oakland Public Library tocoordinate Family Learning activities andencourage library use. They are also coor-dinating with Next Step Learning Center(a local GED program). Learners fromboth Next Step and Second Start attendedthe recent Internet Workshop.

We’re thrilled to have Amy and Shreeheading up this crucial program, which ismade possible by our partnership withChevron Corporation. Watch our websitefor more Family Literacy Program news.

Letter from the Development Office

Dear Friends,

In 1994, Saint Vincent’s started a special fund to help us

address some of the emergency situations our families were

experiencing. The fund is called the Emergency Respite Fund

(ERF), and the need for it has increased over time.

Thankfully, the Sisters of the Holy Family and several other

foundations have been funding this project for many years.

Last week we received a challenge grant from the Sisters of

the Holy Family: the Sisters will match up to $15,000 of

grants and/or donations that we are able to raise for the pur-

pose of assisting families during transitional and emergency

need situations.

We use the Emergency Respite Fund to provide for our

families at times of crisis due to unexpected illness, violence

and even death. Currently we have 189 families earning

incomes at or below the poverty level. Many live in high-

crime neighborhoods, and are managing the day-to-day

struggles of raising a family while trying desperately to break

their cycle of poverty. Coping with unexpected family crises

can be overwhelming. To give you an idea of how this fund

has reached out and made a difference, we’ve helped families

with unexpected funeral or travel costs; medical, dental and

optical needs; basic needs due to accident, theft, or job loss;

warm clothing, bus passes, and emergency housing.

This fund reaches deep into the community to help fami-

lies get back on their feet—lending that “helping hand” when

it is needed most, and enabling the children to experience

more joys in life, rather than the struggles associated with

poverty, crime and the various ills that take their childhood

from them.

We hope you can help us

meet the unexpected needs

that continue to plague our

families. Can we count on you

to help us meet this challenge

with a monthly pledge or a

one-time gift?
