ANTIQUES NEWS, P.O.BOX 500 MOUNT JOY, 17552 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 44, NO. 3 FRIDAY JANUARY 18, 2013 attleships and oceanlin- ers lined up alongside paddle wheelers and sub- marines to form a mighty flotilla at Bertoia Auctions’ November sale of the Dick Claus Collection, Part II in Vineland, New Jersey. The sec- ond and final offering of spectacular antique toy boats, naval fig- ures and trolleys drew keen interna- tional interest and above-estimate prices, with the day’s total registering $1.6 million (inclusive of 15 percent buyer’s premium). “Many pieces in the sale surpassed their high estimates, including the top five lots. The Marklin Paddle Wheeler ‘Chicago’ sold for $264,500 against an estimate of $200,000 to $250,000,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner Jeanne Bertoia. The German-made circa 1900-1902 “Chicago” was the very example depicted on the dust jacket cover of “The Allure of Toy Ships,” the respected reference Claus authored in 2006. From stem to stern, the 31-inch-long clockwork vessel with tiered decks, side- positioned lifeboats, finely hand-painted details and six original crew figures was described by Bertoia as “a marvel of artistic perfection.” No small detail was over- looked in the creation of the “Chicago.” It featured ornately turned handrails rather than flat ones, a complex double-tier bridge at the front and even fancy curtains inside the windows. Competitors vying for the pricey “Chicago” included three phone bidders, online bid- ders and several bidders in the gallery. An East Coast US col- lector who had sent a represen- tative to assess the toy prior to the auction claimed the day’s top prize with a phone bid of $264,500. The buyer of the “Chicago” had been the underbidder on the record-setting Marklin “Providence” boat, which sold at Bertoia’s for $247,250 on May 12, 2012, (Dick Claus col- lection, Part I). “He wasn’t going to miss out this time,” Bertoia said. Of the top 10 lots, six were battleships. An imposing circa- 1902 Marklin first-series Battleship “New York” was ready for engagement with its array of guns, an armored canon, crane at stern side, and railed observation decks. The formidable 35-inch clockwork warrior was a crowd favorite and sailed off to an East Coast US buyer for $155,250 - more than twice the high estimate. A second-series Marklin Battleship “Mexico” boasted a busy superstructure with guns positioned in a row at its sides and at upper and deck lev- els. Beautifully hand painted in tobacco and cream with corn- flower blue accents, the 30-inch vessel achieved $126,500 against a presale esti- mate of $60,000 to $70,000. The toy was shipped back to its German homeland. Sold to Germany via the Internet, a Marklin Deutschland electric-powered ocean liner com- manded $149,500 - nearly triple the low estimate. It was one of nine boats that broke the six-figure barrier in Bertoia’s sale, prompting Jeanne Bertoia to observe that, “when compared to auctions of even a few years ago, prices on fine European toy boats have escalated quite dramatically.” The Claus collection also included rare, early toy trolleys. Several floor bidders and three other bidders on the phones chased the premier entry of the group, an 18-inch electric-pow- ered Voltamp #2115 Interurban Trolley with tin-on-wood frame with cast wheels and fittings. Estimated at $14,000 to $15,000, it collected a much heftier than expected “fare” of $24,250 from a bidder in the audience. Many of the Heyde sailor fig- ures, which had served as acces- sories to the period boats in the Claus collection, doubled and even tripled expectations. A group lot replicating a blue-uni- formed work party had been estimated at $600 to $800, but didn’t have to put in any over- time to reach $3,450. Approximately $600,000 of the sale total was attributable to floor bidders, some of whom had flown in from Europe expressly to attend the auction. Approximately one-third of the 374 lots went to the Internet; phone and absentee bidders pre- vailed on the remainder. Interest in the renowned Claus collection didn’t end with the final drop of the auctioneer’s hammer, however. “People who had attended the auction called afterwards to say they didn’t know why they hadn’t raised their hand to bid on this par- ticular lot or that one, and wanted t o know if any toys were available to purchase post- sale. But the collection was 100 percent sold,” Jeanne Bertoia confirmed. “I’ve always said that if you pay a high price for an item, you forget about it in a month. But it’s the one that got away that you never forget.” In retrospect, it was evident that the November 10 sale was a social event enjoyed by all. In keeping with what is now a tradi- tion at their higher-profile sales, Bertoia’s hosted a catered gourmet luncheon to thank those who had come to the gallery for a “live auction” experience. Guests sipped wine and dined on freshly carved turkey, stuffed pork and other delicious offerings. “After the sale - like our other sales in the past - we received nice thank-you notes and even gifts from peo- ple who said they appreciated our hospitality,” said Bertoia. “We do make an effort to create an atmosphere that will encour- age our friends in the hobby - and friends we have not yet met - to attend our auctions in person. We’ve found that our auction environment has motivated more couples to attend, which is very nice to see.” (Continued On Page 2) PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID ENGLE PUBLISHING CO. A high-energy adventure from start to finish, the two-part auction of the Dick Claus antique toy boat collection left little room for doubt regarding the current strength of the antique toy mar- ket. The combined total from Bertoia’s auction sessions held May 12 ($1.8 million) and November 10 ($1.6 million) - both featuring the Claus col- lection exclusively - confirmed what the rest of the antiques and fine art market has known for several years, now - that the rarest and best items of any cate- gory are like money in the bank. The average lot price during the 210-lot May ses- sion was a remarkable $8,500, a figure that would delight nearly any auction- eer. The top lot, Marklin’s majestic 26-inch clockwork “Providence” boat, took the blue ribbon at $247,250. The prestigious Marklin brand dominated Part I, claiming seven out of the top 10 slots with highlights including a “Kaiserin Augusta Victoria” steam-powered ocean liner, $138,000; a boxed first- series “Battleship New York,” $109,250; and a circa 1915 sec- ond-series “Battleship Brooklyn,” $103,500. As described in the accompanying main feature, Part II followed a very similar pattern, with Marklin productions ruling the high seas and a Paddle Wheeler “Chicago” realizing the highest individual price of any toy in the Claus collection: $264,500. “What Dick Claus accom- plished in building this magnifi- cent collection was quite a feat,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. “When the col- lection was initially consigned to us, I knew it was the best antique boat collection in the United States, but I wasn’t sure if it was the best antique toy boat collec- tion in the world. Now that I’ve been in touch with so many of the top boat collectors in Europe, there is no doubt whatsoever that the Claus collection was the world’s best. To collectors of nautical toys, it was the equiva- lent of the Donald Kaufman col- lection.” The Kaufman collec- tion, composed primarily of antique automotive toys, was auctioned for $12.1 million in a five-part series (2009-2011) at Bertoia’s. SHOWS & MARKETS

ANTIQUE SHOW & FLEA MARKET CALENDAR

“The Original 160th Semi-Annual York Antiques Show &Sale” is scheduled for Friday,Saturday, and Sunday, February1, 2 and 3, 2013 at MemorialHall East, located within theYork Fairgrounds Convention &Expo Center in downtown York,Pennsylvania. This extremelypopular event will feature 96carefully screened exhibitors inroom settings offering a trulyimpressive and outstanding vari-ety of antiques. According toshow manager, Melvin L. Arion, the merchandise at York will runthe full gamut, including 18thand 19th century periodAmerican and English furnitureas well as country pieces in orig-inal paint, fine early porcelainand pottery such as Chineseexport and Staffordshire,Oriental carpets, quilts, hookedrugs, samplers, and other tex-tiles, estate jewelry NativeAmerican pottery and weavings, early kitchen and fireplace items, and much more. Arion does anexceptionally fine job of makingcertain the scope of merchandiseoffered will be as broad as possi-ble so that just about any visitorcan find a “new” treasure! Inaddition, all major credit cardswill be accepted.

Visiting this show, consid-ered by many to be one of the

premier antiquing events in themid-Atlantic region, is the per-fect antidote to the post-Holiday,mid-Winter blahs!

Because of the continuingsuccess of this York show, there’s little turnover, giving vis-itors the opportunity to really getto know the dealers from whomthey’re buying. However, due torecent retirements of show par-ticipants, there will be some newfaces this time: Lana Smith ofLouisville, Kentucky; MarjorieStaufer, Medina, Ohio; WilliamPentin from York, Pennsylvania;and Stephen C. Burkhardt andGround Hog Hollow, both fromFelton, Pennsylvania. In addi-tion, two exhibitors will bereturning to York, both havingparticipated at some point in thepast: gallerybfa Scott Brasseur ofProspect, Pennsylvania andKocian DePasqua fromWoodbury, Connecticut.

Show hours both Friday andSaturday are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5p.m. Parking is free. The build-ing is smoke-free. Food will beavailable. Admission is $10/per-son, $9 with this article or an ad.For information, visit www.the-originalyorkantiquesshow.comor call Arion at (302) 542-3286or during the show only at (717) 718-1097.

“CELEBRATING 37 YEARS IN THE AUCTION PROFESSION”

AUCTION SALE BILLS

Say You Saw It In Antiques & Auction News

by Roy NuhnOf all the wonderful post-

cards published since the sec-ond half of the last century, the McDonald’s topical isundeniably the hottest, prob-ably as hot as the burgers andfries served under the fabledgolden arches every year tomillion of folks.

The company long agoperfected not only the art ofthe hamburger, but a premi-um program second to none.

All credit belongs to RayKroc, Burger MasterSupreme. Becoming the fran-chising agent for theMcDonald brothers whooperated an immensely suc-cessful limited-menu ham-burger-and-fries stand in SanBernadino, California, heturned the idea into one of theworld’s most successful com-panies. Kroc bought out thebrothers in 1961. TodayMcDonald’s spans the globe, with sales in the multi-bil-

lions of dollars each year. The corporation entered

the premium business in a bigway in 1971 with the intro-duction of a RonaldMcDonald doll. It sold for$1.25 with any purchase.Since then there have beentruckloads of different premi-

ums, including toys, glasses, games and books.

As part of the company’sextensive marketing strategy, scores of different chromepostcards have been pub-lished for over a half-century.They are all wonderful adver-tising treasures.

The earliest date back tothe late 1950s. Taken alltogether they offer a kaleido-scope of the company’s histo-ry and America’s fast foodfrenzy. To be found on themare portrayals of theMcDonald’s hamburgerstands and drive-ins for overfive decades, the variousadvertising characters, anddifferent menu favorites -like the Big Mac.

In the beginning, the late1950s and early-to-mid-1960s, the advertising post-

Late 1950s or early 1960s. Illustrated is the typical non-enclosedhamburger stand of that era. Card was bulk-mailed to local res-idents and offered a free “100% Pure Beef Hamburger servedhot off the grill on a toasted bun.”

One of the first advertising postcards (1950s).

AUCTION SALE BILLSMCDONALDScards usually pictured ageneric Golden arches non-enclosed hamburger standwithout indoor seating. Thesecards were used to promote anew store’s opening or tooffer a special deal.

Often they were good fora free burger, fries, or drink.Bulk mailed to local residentsliving within the franchisearea, such postcards today arevery scarce. People whoreceived the cards either con-sidered them as junk mail andthrew them out, or broughtthe mailings to McDonald’sfor the freebie.

Many, if not all, of thesepostcards were mass pro-duced by corporate headquar-ters for use by it franchises. Thus, the same card with theimprint or ad messages of dif-ferent franchises will befound.

The first postcard maywell be one with an illustra-tion of the earliest eatery onthe right side and a typicaltake-out meal on the left.Entitled “McDonald’s All-American,” it urged recipients

(Continued from page 9)

to “look for the golden arch-es” for a great meal. It hadadvertising on the addressside along with the local burg-er stand’s location.

Illustrations on these earlypostcards frequently included“Speedee the Chef,” the firstMcDonald’s mascot. RonaldMcDonald, the company’s

legendary clown adcharacter, replacedhim in 1963, andshows up on manypostcards since then.

Later cards havetended to publicize aspecific menu item,such as “pedigreepotatoes,” thec h e e s e b u r g e r( “ G o l d e nGoodness”) and theBig Mac.

Over the years,McDonald’s hasmailed different vari-eties of “HappyBirthday” postcardsto millions of young-sters nationwide.

These cards also gavethe lucky boy or girl afree meal. This was partof the company’s chil-dren’s birthday club. Ineach drive-in, a pile ofbirthday forms could befound. Parents and otherdoting relatives usedthem to sign up theiryoungsters, listing birthdates and ages.

Of special interest tocollectors are theMcDonald’s noveltypostcards. Two sets areknown, but others maystill be found. One hasgolden arches peelablestickers. A commercialventure by the Germanfirm of HarleikinGeschenke, these pokedfun at the chain and itshamburgers.

The second, avail-able at the drive-ins, is anactivity set with action scenesand was issued in 1995. Itcame with a perforated sec-ond half holding a variety ofstickers for finishing the illus-tration. One of the cards

shows Ronald McDonald as adeep sea diver; the other, fly-ing a kite.

Other McDonald’s post-cards include a diversity oftopics. Some were issued forChristmas. One distributed in

“Little “Golden Book” premium hardbound book, 1985.

Souvenir milk shake cup, oneof a set picturing Olympic ath-letes, early 1990s.

MCDONALDS

the 1980s has a hol-iday scene of litcandles and berries.

Another, titled“ R i v e r b o a tMcDonald, St.Louis, Mo.” wasprinted in 1980. Itdepicts the compa-ny’s paddlewheelerhamburger restau-rant in that city.

Finally, a greatcard shows a bunchof Boy Scouts withthe caption,“ M c D o n a l d ’ ssalutes scouting bysponsoring theWorld Boy ScoutJamboree on ABC-TV, Friday, Aug.18.” Pictured on theback of this 1970sor ’80s card is ano l d - f a s h i o nMcDonald’s restau-rant.

These and themany other post-cards used to pro-mote the fast foodchain are great col-lectibles. As thecompany used tosay in its televisionads, “Nobody doesit like McDonald’scan.” And nobodyhas, despite theefforts of the com-petition.
