COMPLIMENTARY COPY VOL. 42, NO. 51 FRIDAY DECEMBER 23, 2011 by Donald-Brian Johnson t’s smart to deco- rate the whole house with a ‘happy holidays’ theme!” Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas, 1957 Glue. Glitter. Glory That, at any rate, was the idea. Forget “store- bought” seasonal décor. Sure, it’s eas- ier popping open a Hallmark honeycomb Santa centerpiece than laboriously creating one out of felt and cotton. And, in the time it takes to cover just one Styrofoam ball with sequined pushpins, you can fill an entire tree with Shiny Brite ornaments. But then, where would the chal- lenge be? And, if those festive “Holiday Ideas” magazines of the 1950s and 1960s are to be believed, there was nothing mid- century American home- makers welcomed more than a Christmas challenge. The results were some- times innovative, sometimes silly, but always entertain- ing. What eye-catching holi- day miracles were accom- plished with simple squares of colored felt...empty paper towel rolls...Q-tips, tinfoil, glitter, Elmer’s Glue...and, of course, plenty of time and patience. These homemade Christmas creations continue to evoke nostalgic memo- ries, long after the felt has faded, and the glitter has gone with the wind. “Up On The Housetop” “Hey, Dad! Make the outside of your home a glori- ous setting as lively and cheerful as old St. Nick him- self! With deft hand, and an eye for color, line and pro- portion, you can fashion beautifully original, new- each-season trims. You’ll find yourself growing more con- fident with each design developed. Friends will notice and admire as they drop by! Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas, 1959 There’s a rarity: a Dad-themed yuletide hint. Make no mistake about it, those “how-to” holiday magazines were aimed primarily at the lady of the house. Better Homes & Gardens, House & Garden, House Beautiful, Good Housekeeping, and all the rest, knew their prospective audi- ence well. The majority of the Christmas decorating tips were for those whose full-time jobs still remained within the home. Dad, meanwhile, had to be con- tent with just the occasion- al cookie crumb tossed his way, Most Dad-hints were of the home-handyman variety: how to make exte- rior of the house season- ably appealing. Some assignments for Dad, cour- tesy of the 1954 Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas: * “Wind ropes of bal- sam around your lamppost, tie on chains of cranberries, and cubes of dry bread. The birds will carol their thanks!” * “Another lamppost idea, guaranteed to make passers-by curious. Tie gaily wrapped Christmas packages to the post, for seasonal street-side cheer.” * “Brighten that bare exterior wall with a gigantic plas- tic foam snow- man head! ‘Frosty’s’ nose is a half-ball of fiery red plastic foam. His eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are cut from foam scraps, and painted black.” * “Do you have a well-equipped work- shop? A good knowl- edge of how to work with wire? Why not try reindeer, sleigh, and Santa made of wire mesh, and coated with luminous paint?” With Dad safely out of the way, (and, judging by the sound of that wire mesh project, out of the way for quite some time), Mom could get to work on everything else. And, “everything else” was no exaggeration! “It’s The Holiday Season!” “Holiday decorations often belie their simple beginnings. It’s exciting to see what imagination can do with some of the prized household pos- sessions that you find waiting for adornment. Start with things you have. Work magic with your ingenuity!” Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas, 1958 When it came to Christmas creativity, no do- it-yourself projects were too daunting for the magazine writ- ers who dreamed them up, or for homemakers eager to give those projects a try. A few of the more unlikely (and time-consuming) from Better Homes & Gardens in the late ‘50s: * Regal Reindeer Wall Decorations. “Cut reindeer shapes out of scrap plywood, pad with cotton from baby’s changing table, then cover with glittery foil wrapping paper. Antlers are Manzanita branches, with tiny tree lights taped to the tip of each antler point.” * Klassy Kitchen Door- Knocker. “Gild an ordinary skil- let and spoon, and transform them into a festive kitchen door- knocker. A shower of red tree ornaments, red satin ribbon, and holiday greens make for effective trimming.” * Klever Kitchen Counter Light. “Place votive candle in a brownie pan. Cover with a cheese grater. For those fresh-out of

Manzanita branches, sparehubcaps, and pink rubbermice, there were smaller-scale options. Christmasstockings and wall hang-ings could be assembledquickly and painlesslyfrom colored felt kits, withsequins, rickrack, andother trim providing thesparkle. No winding cop-per wire into a spiral. Nogilding skillets andspoons. Just fabric, trim, apattern, and - oh yes - lotsof Elmer’s Glue.

The most convenientthing about this type of do-it-yourself decoration wasthat even the clumsiestcraftsperson, (and weknow who we are), could

eventually come up withsomething presentable. Sincethe projects were advertisedin the very same magazinespromoting more ambitious,from-scratch décor, there wascause for optimism. The pre-cut kit components, fromSanta’s beard, to Rudolph’sred nose, were lightly scored, ready to be popped from theirfelt backings, glued intoplace, and dotted withsparkling, sequined adorn-ment. Still, there was a bit ofwiggle room for improvisa-tion. One unidentified crafterput together an oversize“Three Kings” felt wall hang-ing, with what appears to be aglittered plastic pan-scrubber

standing in for the “Star ofBethlehem”.

Color photos with each kitgave an idea of how splendidthe final product would(might?) look. As Better

Homes & Gardens put it in1962, “these cute and carefreenovelties are both bright andappealing. They’re designedand trimmed on a whim, forpleasurable, once-a-yearenjoyment. Get the glue, andbegin!”

felt, but still not up to thedemands of “upsy-daisyumbrella chandeliers” - otherpossibilities beckoned. Thosewith rudimentary sewingskills, (and an easy-to-followpattern), could createChristmas stockings fromsuch at-hand materials asupholstery scraps, embellish-ing with spare buttons andbeads. Amateur needle-wield-ers could pick up holidayembroidery and needlepoint

kits, the design carefullyillustrated and, in somecases, partially completed. And, when all else failed, there were always ginger-bread houses. No “holidayhow-to” publication wascomplete without instruc-tions for building one ofthese irresistible, if usual-ly inedible, yuletide treats.

Other than the ginger-bread houses, many exam-ples of homemade holidayhandicraft, have held upsurprisingly well despitethe passage of years. Wall

Peter Swift Seibert

Some weeks back, Iwrote a series of articles oncollecting frakturs - thePennsylvania German art ofilluminated writing. Sincethen I have had lots of feed-back about those two essays

including one story from acollector who received acopy of the article tuckedinto her on line purchase ofa fraktur. So, I wanted to doa quick follow-up story toexpand upon the merits ofcollecting fraktur.

I was online over theweekend looking at fraktursfor sale. Such scoping issomething I do because“you never know what youwill find.” What struck me isthat for an investment ofabout $500, you could prob-ably bid upon and acquire

between 6 and 10 differentprinted frakturs from vari-ous sellers andhave the begin-ning of a reallygreat collec-tion.

P r i n t e dfrakturs havegone throughreal peaks andvalleys amongc o l l e c t o r s .Back in the1980s when Ifirst startedcollecting, they were super

expensive. Antiques co-opshad not come into being as

strongly astoday, andfewer avenuesmeant higherp r i c e s .Similarly, thepublishing ofthe book onM a h a n t a n g oFurniture, andhow the folk artdesigns on thepieces werecopied from

Harrisburg printed frakturs,

meant that everyone had tohave one. Prices jumped andcontinued to grow into the1990s.

Then along came theInternet and all of a suddencertain “rare printed frak-turs” were found to be verycommon. This is one of thebest parts about online auc-tion sites as a vehicle tolearn quickly what is com-mon or rare by the abun-dance of pieces offered atany given time. I recall buy-ing my first GS Peters print-ed fraktur from Harrisburg

for $225 and thinking I got abargain. That same frakturtoday could be purchasedfor $65 online, as Peters wasa prolific printer whoseshop, even after his death, turned out quantities ofitems. He is no longer rare.

So the prices on frakturhave settled down! Today, many serious collectors ofprinted frakturs have alsobeen selling their exampleson line with the result beingthat not only are there an

‘50s CHRISTMAS

hangings and stockings haveproven particularly resilient, perhaps because they weremade of fabric, and storedflat, away from direct sun andmoisture. A regular, and sur-prisingly affordable “find” atestate sales and antiqueshows, prices begin at just afew dollars for pieces in dis-playable condition, toppingout at $25 to $30 for oversizeelaborate hangings, or stock-

ings with especially lavishtrim. And, Elmer’s Glue stillworks its magic. Just as in the1950s and 1960s, a generousdollop can quickly re-affix astray sequin, or dangling feltantler. (Incidentally, thosevintage “Christmas Ideas”magazines themselves arealso collectible and make foran entertaining read. Copiesin good condition average $5to $10 - and you just mightrun across an idea worth trying!)

“I’ll Be Home ForChristmas”

“ D o - i t - y o u r s e l fideas make yourChristmas a real familyholiday, filled with richand wholesome tradi-tions!”

Better Homes &Gardens ChristmasIdeas, 1954

It’s Christmas onceagain. Out come theboxes of decorations, from their rest-of-the-year hiding places:down in the basement,up in the attic, out in thegarage, under the beds.

“Santa’s Mail” felt wall banner/cardholder, 14 inches wide by 18 incheslong, $15 to $20.

FRAKTURS(Continued from page 3)

Corinne Earnest havedescribe them, “the largestbody of manuscript art pro-duced in America.” Theyhave a folksy charm thatpeople like, while also repre-senting “cutting edge” tech-nology (printing) for theirtime.

What would I collect ifstarting a new collection ofprinted frakturs?

1. I would hunt for thoseworks that were embellishedby artists. Francis Levan, acrazed drunkard working inBerks County, took simpleblack and white printedforms and went nuts withcolor and pattern. They aredefinitely folk art!

2. Purchase them from anarea that interests you. If youare from Lancaster County, then get examples printed byLancaster printers as well aspieces done for Lancasterfamilies.

3. Search for the oddballitems. I recall one frakturthat the museum I directedacquired that was for a bas-tard child. A real rarity as itwas proof for that child ofwho his unwed parents were.

So consider printed frak-tur as a wonderful folk arttreasure!

VALUE MY STUFF(Continued from page 4)

If you love Christmas, his-toric homes, and decorating, there are two books you needto add to your library.Decorating for Christmas atHistoric Houses by PatriciaHart McMillan and KatherineKaye McMillan and DeliciousChristmas Decorations AtHistoric Houses and YourHome by Patricia HartMcMillan are published bySchiffer. Patricia HartMcMillan is an interior design-er, editor and author. She andher daughter and co-author,

Katharine, often consulton environmental designof interiors. Patricia isthe author of fifteendesign and architecturebooks. Their lists ofaccomplishments arelarge and impressive, butdon’t let that intimidateyou. These authors havea simple, elegantapproach to things, andthe two latest volumesare fun and inspiring toanyone interested in his-toric architecture andhow to decorate it for theholidays.

In Decorating forChristmas at Historic Houses,

the beauty of Christmas isdisplayed through decorat-ed historic homes fromaround the country. FromVirginia to Texas, tour 27houses and see how historycomes alive in a festiveway during the holiday sea-son - from magnificentestates to simple resi-dences. Delicious

Christmas Decorations AtHistoric Houses and YourHome takes a historicalapproach to festive Christmasdecorating, taking inspirationfrom the wonderful decora-tions of fruits and greenery atColonial Williamsburg,Virginia, and other historichouse museums across thenation.

Both of these books can befound in bookstores, brick andonline; or visit the SchifferLtd.website, www.schiffer-books.com.

Gathered together andstacked high, the unpackingbegins. Strings of lights...del-icate glass ornaments...tree-topper angels, and twinklingstars. And there, carefullynestled in tissue amidst all the“store-bought” glory, are theholiday decorations nearestand dearest to our hearts.Grade school goodies. Paperplates and pipe cleaners, transformed, with a dustingof gold glitter (and too muchglue) into sprightly angels.Empty thread spools, painstakingly painted red, then strung together on wireto form hanging “Santas”.Styrofoam balls, laboriouslycovered with pinned-on over-size colored beads, a ribbonloop at one end indicating theintended ornamental func-tion. And felt stockings, decked out with pasted-onsnowman faces and reindeerheads, liberally festoonedwith plenty of sequins andlots of gold braid.

Over the years, more thanone colored bead has fallenby the wayside. These days, the red paint is flaking onthose spool “Santas”. Thepaper-plate skirts of the pipe-

cleaner angels are creased, insome places torn. They’vebeen Scotch-taped (thenScotch-taped again). The felt-stocking snowman is onceagain in need of a newsequined eye. But never mindthe wear-and tear. These areour very own Christmasmemories. We made them.Maybe we weren’t very goodat it...maybe we still aren’t.But without this homemadeholiday hoard...this lifetimeof personal collectibles....itjust wouldn’t be Christmas.

“Don’t stop as soon asyou’ve hung a wreath in thewindow, and set up the tree inthe living room. ‘Do-it-your-self’ for the holidays, andmake your entire home a pret-ty picture of the season!”

Better Homes & GardensChristmas Ideas, 1952

Donald-Brian Johnson is theco-author of numerous Schifferbooks on mid-twentieth centurydesign, including the recentlyreleased “Postwar Pop”. His holi-day decorations include at least onehomemade felt Santa. Pleaseaddress inquiries to: [email protected].

Christmas. No matter whatthey call him in your neck ofthe woods, it’s Christmastime again, and...he’sbaaaack!

Although the custom ofChristmas gift-giving origi-nates with the Three Kings, the legend of Santa Clausdates to the fourth century.Stories of his origin vary, buthere’s one favorite:

An impoverished noble-

man in Asia Minor, unable toprovide dowries for his threemarriage-minded daughters, was near despair. St.Nicholas, a wealthy, good-hearted bishop, heard of thenobleman’s plight. On a nightbefore Christmas, he tossedthree bags of gold through anopen window in the man’shouse. Each bag landed in astocking hanging to drybefore the fire (good aim, St.Nick!) Each daughter nowhad her dowry, and the noble-man, upon discovering hisbenefactor’s identity, spreadnews of this generosity farand wide. The saga of themysterious and saintly holi-

Santa’s gnomish, elf-likeappearance. (Moore is saidto have based the charac-terization on his right jollyold handyman, JayDuyckinck.)

The image of a roly-poly, human-sized gent inred suit and fluffy whitebeard, came courtesy ofHarper’s Bazaar illustratorThomas Nast, in the 1860s.That visual, refined sincethen in countless Coca-Cola ads and Ideals maga-zine covers, is essentially“Santa” as we recognize himtoday.

As early as the1820s, stores began togear their Christmasadvertising specifical-ly around Santa. In1841, a life-size Santafigure in aPhiladelphia shopwindow attractedhordes of eageryoungsters, whodragged along theirtoy-buying parents, much to the owner’sdelight. Live depart-

ment store Santas soon fol-lowed, as did “Letters toSanta,” those annual wishlists which turned such tinytowns as “Santa Claus,Indiana” into postal Meccas.
