ANTIQUES NEWS, P.O.BOX 500 MOUNT JOY, 17552 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Published Weekly By Joel Sater Publications www.antiquesandauctionnews.net VOL. 43, NO. 52 FRIDAY DECEMBER 28, 2012 t’s the time of year, with a new year approaching, that we think about the ‘sands of time.’ Years ago, one man took sand and created unimaginable art pieces with it. Though he cre- ated hundreds of them, very few remain, and when an example shows up at auction, the prices are off the charts. No doubt this humble artist would be amazed! One such example sold recent- ly in Iowa. The Rich Penn September Auction Event drew worldwide interest. And one of the fea- tured items set a world auction record. The Andrew Clemens (1852-1894) sand jar, lot #984 generated a full bank of phone bidders competing with aggressive Internet and floor bid- ders. When the sand and dust set- tled, the 7.5-inch-tall piece of sand art hammered down to an East Coast bidder for $45,000. All reported prices are hammer prices and do not reflect the 10 percent to 20 percent buyer’s premium. Andrew Clemens was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and later lived in McGregor, Iowa, both on the Mississippi River. When very young he suffered from encephali- tis and was rendered deaf. As a young man, Clemens developed a unique talent to create sand art in bottles and jars. He gathered col- ored rocks from along the great river and ground them into sand. To create his art he then placed presorted grains of the colored sand into small glass drug bottles using a fish hook. Pressure from the other sand grains alone held the artwork together. When Clemens completed a sand bottle he sealed the bottle with a stopper and wax. He created most of his work between 1880- 1886 and is acknowl- edged as the inventor and possibly the sole practitioner of his art form. In his lifetime, it is thought that Clemens pro- duced hundreds of his sand bot- tles. Few survive today. The more complex sub- jects of Clemens’ w o r k ranged from boats to flowers to flags and he often creat- ed custom bot- tles with scenes of his client’s choosing. The most complex of his designs could take up to a year to com- plete. Lot #984 was, according to Rich Penn, “...an inverted apothecary or botanical jar. These jars were even more difficult to do since not only was this art applied backwards, it was also upside down. This jar shows a patriotic eagle in flight with the stars and stripes in the background. The inverse shows the date, Nov. 1, 1890 and the name Emily. It’s almost impossi- ble to imagine these were created one grain of sand at a time.” Penn went on to say, “This intricate art form is virtually unique to Andrew Clemens. We’re thrilled to see this Iowa folk artist getting the grow- ing interest and attention that he so richly deserves.” The two day auction included three featured collections; the Paul Brenner collec- tion, which included the Clemens jar, the three genera- tion Addleman Drug Store from Oberlin, Kansas, the Terry Brown collection of toy fire engines and select pieces from the Jim Corcione Belding spool cabinet collection. These diverse collec- tions made for an exciting auction. Highlights from the Saturday ses- sion included a clas- sic circa 1890 Apothecary Trade Sign. The 42-inch- high lead- ed glass drug- gist mortar included a large jeweled center band and etched glass panels at the top and bottom. During the entire auction, the sign had light on the interior and spread a warm gold and red tone all around it. Even with restoration to the lower advertising panels, the sign still delivered a solid $12,500 winning bid. From leaded glass to unleaded gas, another top lot was the 1950 Ford F1 pickup. The first “Post War” new design for the Ford pickup was beautifully refur- bished. It hauled off a top bid of $11,500. Soda fountain items are always strong at Penn’s auction and were strong during the Saturday ses- sion. A rare Cherri-Bon syrup dis- penser, in the form of a bright red cherry attracted considerable interest and settled in on an $8,000 winning bid. Ice cream collectors dished up bids that drove the Manos Novelty Company heart- shaped ice cream dipper up to a top bid of $4,000. Interest was strong on country store items as well. The coin-operated Potter’s spool cabinet was described as very rare. Indeed, there have been no auction records for one selling in at least the past 20 years. In superb origi- nal condition, with crisp and legible stencil- ing, that cabi- net brought $6,000 and is destined for the Kalona Quilt & Textile Museum in Kalona, Iowa. Other spool cabinets also did well. A six- drawer walnut J & P Coats and a 66-inch-tall, 48- drawer Corticelli both finished at $2,400. Among the more unusual spool cabinet related pieces was the American Thread Co. display globe. The 36- inch-tall globe had an intricate structure of spool threads, built in the same manner as a ship in a bottle, entirely inside the globe. The Holyoke, Massachusetts, com- pany used the display at exposi- tions. Probably the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 and/or the Columbian Exhibition in Chicago in 1893. The globe stitched up a winning bid of $2,300. Other country store pieces found committed bidders. The Johnson’s Peacemaker coffee bin, in excellent original con- dition with its original chim- ney went to a delighted bidder from KS, with a winning bid of $2,200. The 96-drawer hardware store nut and bolt cabinet sold to an online bid- der for the same $2,200 bid. Two of the advertising pieces from the Addleman Drug Store came with a unique story of survival. Both were painted wooden cigar signs, circa 1880. One was for Tom Moore Cigars and the other for Henry George Cigars. Early in their lives, both had been made into a table top and covered with oil cloth. They were protect- ed for a hundred years and their great condition garnered bids of $2,000 and $1,900 respectively. Unusual and unique items were scattered throughout the two day auction. A Salesman’s sample jail cell, with origi- nal patent papers and carrying case sold to a European buyer for $3,250. A motorized Schwinn 1936 Packard bicycle, with contempo- rary modifications charmed the bicycle lovers and rolled away with a $3,000 top bid. Lot #253, the alcohol fan, gener- ated curiosity and a number of questions. How did it work? It used an alcohol burner to drive a cooling fan! Quite a num- ber of bidders must have known that answer, since the heated bid- ding delivered a cool $3,100 high bid! Soda items are always plentiful at Rich Penn Auctions. This event was no exception. A Coca-Cola Cleveland clock in superb working condition gathered up a top bid of $2,900, while a Coca-Cola Vendo 44 vending machine produced a (Continued on page 3) PRSRT STD U.S. POSTAGE PAID ENGLE PUBLISHING CO. Every great artist and genius had a hometown, a place that nurtured their art until it burst upon the world. Florence had its Michelangelo, Stratford-on-Avon had its Shakespeare, Salzburg had its Mozart and McGregor has its Andrew Clemens. Many people, even right here in his backyard so to say, have no idea what an awe-inspiring artist Andrew Clemens really was. He did something that no one has ever done, before or since. And he did it despite, or maybe even because of, his handicap of total deafness. He was born in 1857 and grew up right here in McGregor, Iowa, one of six brothers, the son of a wagon maker. He was taught at Deaf School to work with wood and to “bot- tom” cane chairs to make a living, but at the age of 12 his world changed. He was asked Andrew Clemens - Sand Master (Continued on page 7)

including a W. C. Fields com-edy reel, the machine flippedits way up to $1,700. Withgreat Iowa historical appeal, the Civil War recruitingbroadside for Iowa’sSixteenth Volunteer Infantryenlisted a host of Iowa bid-ders. The piece...from PaulBrenner’s Iowa collection, ended up dropping the ham-mer at $1,600.

According to Penn,“This auction was a solidexample of the economictimes. We had huge globalparticipation. But bidderstoday are cautious andselective. Quality is alwaysquality. And quality alwaysbrings serious bidders andquality prices.” Penn’s auc-tions are always online andthe online bidders were veryactive and many were suc-

by a friend of the family, agrocery store owner namedGoldschmidt, to take advan-tage of the wonderful caveknown as Pictured Rocks atPike’s Peak, which had over40 different colors of sand, and make little three inchglass bottles filled with thiscolorful sand to sell totourists coming in on theriverboats.

Now this would havebeen nothing spectacular inthe hands of anyone else inthe world, but Andrew was-n’t like anyone else. Hebegan to really enjoy work-ing with this colorful sandand the artist inside him, thegenius took over and sudden-ly what had begun only as amatter of artistically layeringdifferent colors of sand insmall bottles, became incred-ible, sometimes breathtak-ingly beautiful works of art.

Soon the young man wasbeing commissioned to cre-ated bottles for birthdays,Christmas, anniversaries, and all kinds of special occa-sions. Sometimes he would

work with a photographbecause he wanted to getevery detail of his subjectexact. Other times, he wasable to simply create, rightout of his imagination, with-out even a preliminarydrawing to guide him. He,himself, designed the toolsof his craft out of hickorywood and he worked insideof these small bottles withthe precision of a surgeon. But what was perhaps mostamazing was that most ofthese works of art were cre-ated upside-down!

Andrew died at the earlyage of 37 years old, but inhis short lifetime he createdhundreds of beautiful mas-terpieces that went all overthe world. No one knows forsure how many of thesepriceless bottles have sur-vived over the years, but theMcGregor HistoricalMuseum is lucky enough tohave seven of them. Thepublic is welcome to comeand see the newest donatedAndrew Clemens bottlealong with the others that themuseum has on display.

ANNUAL NEW YEAR’S DAY ANTIQUE AND COLLECTIBLE AUCTION

TWO DAY AUCTION SMALL ITEMS AND OUTSIDE SELL

MONDAY, DECEMBER 31 8 A.M.

by Robert M. Shea, CPCU,Fire Mark Circle of the Americas

Everyone loves a goodstory, and the modern litera-ture on American fire markscontains one or more of thefollowing ideas to enliventhe story:

• The volunteer fire com-pany would not fight a fireunless there was a fire markon the burning building.

• The volunteer fire com-pany received a reward fromthe insurance companywhose fire mark was on theburning building.

• The use of fire marksdiminished because of the

institution of paid municipalfire departments.

Like most stories, theabove points are more fictionthan fact - more hype thanhistory. But, what are thefacts and what was the pur-pose of fire marks inAmerica?

The misconception thatvolunteer fire companies putout fires only on buildingsthat displayed a fire markarises from the fact that somearticles on fire marks do notmake a distinction betweenthe English and Americanrelationship to fire marks.

The English fire insur-ance companies employedtheir own fire brigades, which only fought fires onproperties identified by theiremployers’ fire mark orbadge.

In America, the volun-teer fire companies were inexistence before the firstfire insurance company wasorganized. They fought fireswhether or not a buildingdisplayed a fire mark.

Research shows that it isonly in the 20th centurywhen the idea first appearsthat a volunteer fire compa-ny would not fight a fire ifthere were no fire mark. Some examples fromPhiladelphia Include:

* When the fire alarmsounded “…all of the firecompanies would respond, but only the company whosehouse mark appeared on thehouse in danger fought theflames.” (See footnote 1)

* “If a piece of propertybore no Fire Mark the gallantvolunteers more often thannot quickly left, for then asnow, there was no smallprofit in gratuitous acts ofbenevolence.” (See footnote2)

* “If no insurance firemark was seen the free-lancers [volunteers] wouldoften declare a false alarmand calmly walk away fromthe scene…” (See footnote 3

)None of these storiesabout early Philadelphia aretrue. There are no primarysources which indicate thatvolunteer fire companieswould not fight a fire unlessthe property was insured andhad a fire mark. To this day, writers repeat and embellishthese stories with the resultthat readers, while enter-tained, are misinformedabout the early volunteers.

The reality is that volun-teer fire companies wereprominent social organiza-tions and membership wasan honor. Having made theircase for funding by pro-claiming their work in thepublic interest, it seemsunlikely they would disre-gard any fire. Had thisoccurred, the hue and cry ofthe insurance industry andthe public would certainlyhave been noted.
