■ Antiretroviral drugs administered during the lasttrimester of pregnancy and after birth decrease HIVRNA levels in breast milk, according to researchersfrom Italy and Mozambique. In this study, data wereevaluated from 40 pregnant woman with HIVinfections who received nevirapine, lamivudine andzidovudine from 28 weeks’ gestational age to 1 monthpostpartum (group A) and 40 similar women whoreceived no such treatment (group B). Median breastmilk concentrations of nevirapine, lamivudine andzidovudine were 0.6, 1.8 and 1.1 times higher thanthose in maternal plasma, respectively. Significantlylower median levels of HIV RNA were observed inbreast milk for group A, compared with group B, atboth delivery and at 1 week postpartum (2.3 vs 3.4 logand 1.9 vs 3.6 log respectively); similar results wereseen in plasma analyses.Giuliano M, et al.
