I am indeed happy thatinternational friendship is growing in asystematic and useful manner by combiningwith the hearts of our brilliant students in SriLanka.

It is worthwhile to mention that the SLCSFhas made great strides towards it’s centralgoal of producing good salutary and noblecitizens, accomplished with characterdevelopment and enhanced spiritualattitudes to the entire society. To achievethis goal, the procedure we have launched isunique and the success is vivid year by year.

With the experience gained during the past 7years, I am perfectly powered with anintrinsic confidence emerging from thedepth of my heart and it always enlivens mybeing with the blissful determination ofcarrying out this noble process in futureyears.

******************************************Annual Scholarship Awarding

Ceremony – 2004******************************************The annual scholarship awarding ceremonyfor 2004 was held on August 21, at SriSudassanaramaya, Battarmulla, Sri Lanka,from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This ceremonywas presided by our Patron and Advisor ofthe Foundation, Venerable Dr. MirisseDhammika, with the participation of 50 newstudents, their parents, some of thescholarship sponsors and other well wishersof the foundation. These 50 students wereselected from over 1000 applicationsreceived, based on their G.C.E. (OrdinaryLevel) examination results in 2004, theincome per family member and consideringother special circumstances (such as,deceased parents).

The chief guest for the occasion was MajorGeneral Ananda Weerasekera. Mr.Weerasekera, in his guest speech, explainedwhat is meant by true leadership and thecharacteristics of a true leader.

At this ceremony, two students in their firstyear of university study in engineering wereawarded the Ranjan De Silva Memorialscholarships.

Scholarship award certificates and studypacks were distributed to the 50 newscholarship recipients. Lunch was providedfor all the participants.

We thank all the students and their parentsfor participation, after travelling longdistances from remote villages and cities insome cases. We also thank the scholarshipsponsors who participated and awarded

Memorial Scholarships******************************************Mr. Ranjit de Silva, Mrs. Dora de Silva andMs. Liza de Silva in Vancouver, BritishColumbia, Canada, have established theRanjan de Silva Memorial Scholarship Fundin 2002, in memory of late Mr. Ranjan deSilva. The de Silva family has entrusted theSri Lanka Canada Scholarship Foundation toadminister this scholarship fund on theirbehalf and select suitable recipientsannually.

This fund is used to award scholarships toone or more first year Engineering Facultystudent(s) in Sri Lankan Universities for aperiod of one year. A monthly award of Rs1000.00 is provided for one year to each ofthe selected students. The main selectioncriteria will be the financial status of thestudent’s family and the academic

excellence of the student, based on theresults of the G.C.E. A/L examination.

The following first year Engineeringstudents have been awarded thesescholarships during 2004:

Directors …******************************************Dr. Upul Atukorala, the Secretary of the SriLanka – Canada Scholarship Foundationsince its inception has resigned due to hisextremely busy schedule. Upul did manypioneering work in founding the SLCSF, bypreparing its constitution and all the otherdocuments for registering it as a non-profitorganization in British Columbia. Sincethen, he was the Secretary of the Foundationuntil June 2004. We are grateful to Upul forall his volunteer contributions to theFoundation for the benefit of our Sri Lankanstudents!

We are very pleased to welcome Mr. SuduVatagodakumbura who was elected as theVice President of the SLCSF. Sudu is apracticing professional engineer.

SLCSF scholarships

The Sri Lanka-Canada ScholarshipFoundation, a non-profit organizationregistered in Canada in 1998 under thepatronage of Dr. Ven. Mirisse DhammikaThera, to help the excelled but needystudents in Sri Lanka, has awarded another50 scholarships this year on August 21 atSiri Sudassanaramaya, Battaramulla,increasing the total number of recipients upto 272.

Annually, applications are called in publicthrough newspapers & other media from SriLankan students, irrespective of theirreligion, race or the province they live in.

The selections are made by the board ofdirectors in Canada mainly based on thehigher performance at the G.C.E. (O/L)Examination of the current year and thedisadvantaged family income.

The number of scholarships is varied fromyear to year as it depends on the currentnumber of sponsors. Under thesescholarships, the recipients get the relevantcheque worth Rs. 750/- by registered postfor each academic month until they sit forthe G.C.E. (A/L) Examination.

The statistics show that more than 60% ofthe recipients enter the Universities annuallygetting succeeded at the G.C.E (A/L)Examination. According to the current

results of the recipients of 2002 batch, whosat for the G.C.E. (A/L) Examination in2004, 74% have got through the exam withflying colours at their 1st sitting, Out ofthem, 20% have been have been placed theDistrict Ranks from 1st to 5th.

In 2002, the SLCSF extended its objectivesby originating two special annualscholarships, under the “Ranjan V. de SilvaMemorial Scholarship” awarding Rs. 1000/-monthly, for engineering students who studyin the 1st year of the engineering faculty inuniversities.

Special Donations

The following special donations have been made during 2004, in meeting some specific expensesof the foundation. These may not be shown in Annual Financial Statements, as most of these havebeen directly paid by the donors. We thank the following donors for the special donations:
