AP 702 Gospel Jazz Voicings Welcome to AP 702 Gospel Jazz Voicings!
What are voicings? Many people think that chords and voicings are the same things, but they are not. Many people think that voicings are simply inversion, but that is not correct either. VOICINGS are “different ways of voicing chords.” Think about them like an opinion. There are good ways and bad ways to voice an opinion! There are also good times and bad times to voice an opinion! It is the same with voicings. Just like inversion, using a good chord voicing in the right way and in the right place in a song can make all the difference in how it sounds! This course is going to teach you how to voice different types of chords. WHY VOICINGS ARE IMPORTANT AND HOW THEY CAN HELP YOUR PLAYING
One of the main ways voicings can help you is by helping you to “hear and play” the correct melody note. Another way they will help your playing is by making your chords sound more “full.” They also help you integrate your left hand with your right hand. Instead of your right hand just playing a chord, and your left hand playing a note or two, now BOTH hands will be involved in “voicing” the chord! They will also give you a better understanding of chord theory and scales, furthering your ability to play advanced chord extensions! So let’s get started! Basic Voicings below + VOICING CHORD NUMBER 1: 6th Chords In music, we like to refer to things in numbers as you may know. AP 702 Gospel Jazz Voicings Everybody wants to learn to play by ear, right? Well did you know that doing these voicings is actually how I learned to RECOGNIZE CHORDS BY EAR?! That’s right! Once I started doing exercises like these (and I typically did them for a week until I got them down), I started noticing that I could recognize chords by ear! Now, I couldn’t tell you if it was a C6 or an Ab6, but I could tell you that it was a 6th chord! And this is really cool if you are listening to a song and trying to figure out the chords. It’s come in very handy! That’s why I can sit in with a band and start JAMMING immediately because I can use my trained ear of MOVEMENTS and CHORDS to know EXACTLY where they are at all times! Playing by ear is actually made up of two parts: MOVEMENTS and CHORDS. You have to know how to recognize both if you truly want to be able to play by ear. These exercises will teach you how to recognize the chords. But this is just one of the byproducts of learning jazz voicings! How awesome is that! This is going to come in really handy in a few lessons also, when we begin to play REAL songs using REAL Jazz Chord Charts!
ALL PRACTICE SONGS AND CHURCH SONGS IN THIS LESSON ARE OPTIONAL

Playing by ear is actually made up of two parts: MOVEMENTS and CHORDS. You have to know how to recognize both if you truly want to be able to play by ear. These exercises will teach you how to recognize the chords. But this is just one of the byproducts of learning jazz voicings! How awesome is that! This is going to come in really handy in a few lessons also, when we begin to play REAL songs using REAL Jazz Chord Charts!

Everybody wants to learn to play by ear, right? Well did you know that doing these voicings is actually how I learned to RECOGNIZE CHORDS BY EAR?! That’s right! Once I started doing exercises like these (and I typically did them for a week until I got them down), I started noticing that I could recognize chords by ear! Now, I couldn’t tell you if it was a Cm6 or an Abm6, but I could tell you that it was a minor 6th chord! And this is really cool if you are listening to a song and trying to figure out the chords. It’s come in very handy! That’s why I can sit in with a band and start JAMMING immediately because I can use my trained ear of MOVEMENTS and CHORDS to know EXACTLY where they are at all times! AP 702 Gospel Jazz Chords Lesson 5
CHOOSING THE CORRECT VOICING So if have practiced the previous four lessons and mastered the voicings for the eight 6th/7th chords we
have studied, you should be noticing a huge difference in your playing and in your ear. One thing that I struggled with a lot before I learned these voicings was how to PICK THE RIGHT
INVERSION. When we play music, we want to pick not just the “right inversion” (although this is important too), but we want to choose the RIGHT VOICING.
And they are really kind of the same thing, but at the same time they are completely different. You know
what I mean at this point if you have done your homework and really learned these voicings. So now we are going to take some brief time and practice using these voicings some more. On the next book, we have put a Jazz Standard called “Giant Steps” from out of a fake book.
WHAT IS A FAKE BOOK? A fake book is a big book of Jazz songs, and they are written with the melody note on the musical staff
and the chord above that. (Look on the next page to get a visual). It’s called a fake book because the chord chart is written in a way so that you can “fake it.” (Act like you know the song even though you may not.)
So what we will need to do is play the voicing that has the correct melody note on top. (If you do not know how to read musical notes, please check out the first two lessons from our AP 303
course, which will teach you everything you need to know quickly and easily). Now the B△ means Bmaj7. The rest of the chords you will be familiar with. So the first melody note (under the B△) is a Gb. So we would use the voicing that for Bmaj7 that has Gb
on top. This is RH: Bb Eb Gb with LH: B Gb. So this is your first chord/voicing/inversion. We will also show you another way to play it with the chord in your left hand and the melody note on top. The G△ on the second measure has a B note on top, so the voicing we would use would be RH: B F# B
with LH: G D. See how easy it is? And because this song follows little rhyme or reason (it’s just sounds cool), it is PERFECT for practicing
our voicings. If you want to practice your voicings even more, I recommend using a Hymnal (this is one of the best ways
to practice) or getting a Jazz Fake Book (preferably one without words). WARNING: You just have to be careful with Jazz Fake Books with words as some songs may have worldly
lyrics. (Yes I’m that old school music is meant to glorify God first and foremost). Go to the next page to practice “Giant Steps.”

AP 702 Gospel Jazz Chords Lesson 5 IMPORTANT: Now if the chord has a note as the melody that is not part of your voicing (for example the Bb7 in the 2nd measure has a G note as the melody and none of the Bb7 voicings have a G in them), all you have to do is your top note to adjust to the melody. Learn this song slowly at first, and then play it faster and faster. This song is meant to be played REALLY FAST. Look up some recordings of it online to hear the speed.
