AP Environmental Science (APES) - Course Description
Environmental science is interdisciplinary; it embraces a wide variety of topics from different
areas of study. The main themes of the course are Earth systems and resources, the living
world, population, land and water use, energy resource and consumption, and global change.
We will incorporate many lab experiences with outdoor field work to reinforce the information

Calculation Questions Instructions
One of the things included in the AP Exam is calculations. Both multiple-choice
and free response questions address the ability of a student to do basic
calculations without a calculator. Some students have difficulties with this
process. The textbook has some sections designed to assist with these problems:
Do the Math and Measuring Your Impact. Both are included in the packet
I have included these problems from Chapters 1 and 2 of the textbook in this
packet. All the information needed to answer questions is included. Read the
instructions of each problem carefully and make sure you answer it completely.
You will need to go to the website www.footprintnetwork.org to determine your
personal impact on the Earth. There is also a companion site for your book that
has math videos to help with working problems. It is
http://bcs.whfreeman.com/friedlandapes/#t_668210____
This packet will be due on June 8th.
Lab General Instruction
I have included two lab activities for you to do during the summer:
1) What Do You Emit?
This activity corresponds to the math calculations and “Measuring
Your Impact” from Chapter 1. Read the article first and then use the
Worksheet to help you calculate what you emit. Make sure the “Total
Annual Greenhouse Gas Emission” is filled in at the bottom of the chart!
2) Scarcity Lab
This activity requires that you watch or read the story of The Lorax
and critically review it. Included in the review is an understanding of the
“Tragedy of the Commons” and the “Coase Theorum”. Both of these should
be WRTTEN OUT AND INCLUDED with the lab. Please do not forget to do
this step. You will need to present both sides: a) attorney for the Lorax and
b) attorney for the Oncelor. Write you major points on paper with which
side you are representing at the time. Answer all the questions.
This packet will be due on June 8rh.
