The Apostles’ Creed VI - I Believe in the Holy Spirit -

Arian Controversy:Although Jesus the Son was divine, he was a created being, and therefore not co-essential with the Father.Arius = Elder in the church in Libya.

The purpose of a creed is to act as a yardstick of correct belief, or orthodoxy.

Symbolum (Gk) i.e. half of a broken object which, when placed together with the other half, verified the person’s identity.


Nicene Creed 2

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father,God from God, Light from Light,true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father;through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation ….

Apostles’ Creed: I believe in the Holy Spirit.

Nicene Creed: We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the

giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.


I. The Holy Spirit is GOD

The Holy Spirit possesses the attributes of God He is present everywhere, Psalm 139:7-8 He knows all things, Isaiah 40:13 He has infinite power, Zechariah 4:6 He is eternal, Hebrews 9:14

Already ACTIVE from eternity – at creation, in the OT, in the life and ministry of Jesus Christ, the early church, redemption, sanctification, and finally at the consummation.


The Holy Spirit is performs divine works He creates, Psalm 104:30 He gives life, Ezekiel 37:14

The Holy Spirit is given divine titles The Spirit of God, 2 Chronicles 15:1 The Spirit of the LORD, Judges 3:10 The Spirit of Christ, Romans 8:9


The Holy Spirit is identified with the person and activity of the Godhead Holy Spirit and God are used interchangeably,

Acts 5:3-4 Ananias lie to Holy Spirit = lie to God

The Spirit is called Lord, 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 It is possible to blaspheme the Spirit,

Matthew 12:32


II. The Holy Spirit: Relationship and Role within

the Trinity

As God the Father and Son are PERSONS, so also is the Holy Spirit.


The Spirit assists in carrying out the work of the Father Creation, Genesis 1:2; Psalm 33:6b Ultimate consummation, Revelation 5:6-14 God’s work of salvation through the Son, Acts

10:38 “Then Peter began to speak to them, (Cornelius, his

relatives and close friends, some believers from Joppa) how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”


The Spirit works now to glorify the Son John 16:12-15a

“I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth; for he will not speak of his own, but will speak whatever he hears and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare to you. All that the Father has is mine ….”

1 Corinthians 12:3


The Spirit takes the third position , after the Father, and the Son, in the age to come. Revelation 5:6-14

5:6 “seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth” on behalf of the Son, in bringing in people from every tribe, language, people and nation.

5:13 “To him who sits on the throne (the Father) and to the Lamb (the Son) be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever.”


III. Descriptions of the Holy Spirit

The dove, Matthew 3:16

The wind or breath, Acts 2:2

The fire, Acts 2:3-4 The oil of anointing,

Isaiah 61:1 Water, John 7:37-39

A seal, Ephesians 1:13 A deposit, 2

IV. The Work Of The Holy Spirit- God’s Enabling Presence in

Our Life -

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin and its consequences John 16:7-11; Acts 2:1-13, 37-41

The Holy Spirit assures believers of their standing in Christ and their eternal salvation Romans 8:9, 14-16; 2:29

The Holy Spirit directs mission Acts 13:2; 8:29; 10:19-20


The Holy Spirit produces sanctification (the fruit of the Spirit) Galatians 5:22-23; Romans 15:16; 2 Thess.

2:13

The Holy Spirit equips God’s people (gifts of the Spirit) John 14:16; Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians

12:3-7


The Holy Spirit enables God’s children to address him as “Abba” , Romans 8:15

The Holy Spirit prays with us and for us, Romans 8:26-27

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, John 14:25-26


Holy Spirit and the Church

Forms the church, 1 Cor. 12:13

Indwells the church, 1 Cor. 3:16

Enables the church to function as the body of Christ, 1 Cor. 12:7 Worship, prayer, fellowship, witness, service

Enables Christian unity, Eph. 4:3-4


V. Life Applications 1

Be instructed by the Spirit’s deep and abiding willingness to serve unnoticed, without over recognition, without singled-out honor.

Marvel at the Spirit’s willingness to surrender his authority over the incarnate Son, as the Spirit is sent, at Pentecost, from the Father and the Son (John 15:26; Acts 2:33).


Life Applications 2

Live by the Spirit, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh, Gal. 5:16

Be led by the Spirit, Gal. 5:18

Live by the Spirit, be guided by the Spirit, Gal. 5:25

RESULT FRUIT of the Spirit i.e. Christ-likeness
