Why Doncaster Council?

What’s on offer?

Where can we take you?

I’m interested... what next?

We’re immensely proud of our Apprenticeship Programme here at Doncaster Council.

Through our apprenticeships, we are able to give young people, like you, fantastic opportunities to learn new skills, gain qualifications, benefit from on-the-job experience and get a real flavour of the world of work. These are, of course, massively important foundations to boosting your confidence and building your future career.Increasing apprenticeship opportunities in Doncaster is one of our major priorities so it is a subject close to many of our hearts.

At Doncaster Council, we’ve helped to train hundreds of young people over the years in all sorts of apprenticeships including Customer Services, Social Care, Child Care, Business Administration, Horticulture, Highways and Craft Apprenticeships to name but a few.

Our Apprenticeship Programme is very well respected and has received lots of positive recognition - Ofsted rated the service as good in May 2015 and overall our success rates over the last three years for all apprentices are considerably above those gained by similar apprentices around the country.

I’m sure you’ll be aware that there’s so much happening at the moment to develop and regenerate the borough to boost new jobs, investment, businesses, housing and leisure. We as a council, are involved in these exciting projects to transform Doncaster and to modernise the way we deliver services to our residents – as an apprentice, you will have the opportunity to play your part in this.

Our skilled and dedicated Apprenticeship Team, which includes two former apprentices, will support you every step of the way to help you to thrive in your role and achieve your ambitions. So thank you for considering an apprenticeship at Doncaster Council as the next stage in your career and if you choose to join us, I look forward to welcoming you to Team Doncaster.

There’s so much more I could say about our Apprenticeship Programme, but later in the booklet, you can hear from those who’ve had first-hand experience – our apprentices…

Jo Miller, Chief Executive 4

Foreword

A pre-apprenticeship with Doncaster Council can offer you the opportunity to gain high quality work experience in our teams. You can learn work place skills, such as teamwork and time-keeping.

It also builds your confidence and allows you to demonstrate your potential to an employer. At the end of your pre-apprenticeship, if there is an apprenticeship vacancy within Doncaster Council, you will get a guaranteed interview. If there isn’t an apprenticeship opportunity at that time, you will receive a Pre-Apprenticeship Next Steps Discussion. During this discussion you can review what you have learnt and how it will help you with your future goals, such as securing employment, an apprenticeship or further study.

As part of your pre-apprenticeship programme, we will also offer the opportunity for you to study English and Maths (if appropriate).

The programme is flexible and your hours of work can be built around you. However, in most cases the programme will last for 10-15 weeks and an allowance is paid for your lunch and travel.

Want to earn while you learn? Feel ready to take a step onto the career ladder rather than head onto higher education? If so, an apprenticeship is perfect for you! If you are aged 16 or over, living in England and not in full-time education you are eligible to become an apprentice.

Apprenticeships combine study with practical on-the-job training. You’ll work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, earn a wage and get paid holidays, all while working towards a job related qualification. Apprenticeships take 1 to 4 years to complete depending on their level.

Apprenticeship wageFrom Thursday 1 October 2015, the apprentice rate of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) increased by 57 pence to £3.30 per hour. This is the largest ever increase in pay for apprentices and means that those working 40 hours a week earn £1,185 more over the year.

What is a traineeship?Traineeships at Doncaster Council are known as pre-apprenticeships and are training and work experience programmes designed for young people aged 16-24. Pre-apprenticeships help you become ‘work ready’ and are great if you want to get an apprenticeship or job - but don’t yet have appropriate skills or experience. In fact, 100% of young people who have successfully completed the pre-apprenticeship programme with us have successfully secured apprenticeships within the council.

What is anapprenticeship?

You may have decided that sixth form or university isn’t right for you and have opted for the world of ‘earn while you learn’ (and we think you’ve made an excellent choice!)

There has never been a better time to do an apprenticeship, especially in Doncaster. Over 4,000 apprentices were recruited in the town last year, leading to Doncaster being named one of the country’s top apprenticeship locations.

Doncaster Council employs over 4,500 staff making us one of the town’s biggest employers. We have ongoing recruitment and with 185 apprentices currently learning with us, you will be joining a popular and successful programme.

So why join us?It doesn’t matter if you have your heart set on a particular career, lots of opportunities await you at Doncaster Council and an apprenticeship is the perfect way to start.

We have a variety of services you could join, ranging from animal welfare, housing and transport to tourism, health and business support, in England’s largest borough by geographic area.

If you choose to become an apprentice with us we will provide you with a fantastic platform to build your career in a town with an exciting future.

Developments such as the Finningley and Rossington, Regeneration Route Scheme (FARRRS) will provide a link-road stretching from Finningley to Rossington and is a catalyst for development sites along the route. It aims to create over 5,000 new homes and 24,000 private sector jobs in the Sheffield City Region up to 2030. We are also building new leisure facilities such as restaurants and a new cinema in the Cultural Civic Quarter, which includes Cast Theatre, and is well underway.

Robin Hood Airport has grown with new destinations added and a Business Park set to be built nearby. Not only is there good news for the aviation sector in Doncaster but rail is also receiving a boost with the new High Speed Rail College due to open near Lakeside in 2017.

So if you want to work in an ambitious environment with a bright future and strong career prospects, you have made the right choice to become an apprentice with Doncaster Council.

Doncaster Council is one of the top companies that offer apprenticeships. We have won two national awards and have taken on 788 apprentices since 2010 so you can rest assured that by choosing Doncaster Council you will be choosing a fantastic place to start your working life!

One of the major benefits of an apprenticeship is that you can earn while you learn, but what other benefits can you expect as an apprentice here at Doncaster Council? There are many different departments in which our apprentices will be placed and if you are completing Health and Social Care, this will include the independent sector external to the council.

In May 2015 OFSTED described our support for learners as “particularly good and effectively reduces barriers to learning and employment.” A Doncaster Council apprentice receives an allocated assessor from our skilled apprenticeship team, who will support you throughout your qualification to help you to succeed.

The Apprenticeship Team are based at the Civic Office and are on hand to support you every step of the way. Our assessors visit your workplace every 4-6 weeks throughout your apprenticeship. You will also attend ‘day-release’ off the job training once a month including sessions such as Communicate with Confidence, Social Media@Work and an in depth Induction Session, all of which will provide you with valuable knowledge and experience.

OurStories

Rebecca

“After my first year in sixth form I knew university wasn’t for me. I started looking into apprenticeships and discovered that Doncaster Council have so many amazing opportunities for their trainees and apprentices. The application process was simple and I felt that I was well supported throughout.

“I work in the Organisational Transformation Team and I am completing a Level 2 Business Administration qualification. The work is varied from delivering staff development and training to recruitment. Since I started I have also had the opportunity to spend time working in Human Resources and Communications. This has meant that every day is different and varied which has given me a wide range of experience so far. I have attended and assisted with internal staff events, evaluation and data inputting, marketing, filming, photography and working with designers.

“One thing I am most proud of is during my time in the Communications Team I managed the production of this apprenticeship brochure. I gathered and edited content, briefed the designer, organised photography and worked with the Apprenticeship Team to come up with creative ideas on the style.

“Starting out on the Apprenticeship Programme was a very simple, quick process. I was given the choice of which team I would like to join and managed to get my placement straight away with no hassle. My whole team and the Apprenticeship Team were very welcoming and helped lead me in the right direction.

“Once leaving my apprenticeship I secured a temporary job at Doncaster Council and within three months found myself a permanent job. Without the skills and experience I gained through my apprenticeship I wouldn’t have managed to secure the job I’m in today. The programme built my knowledge and experience and helped me to meet new people.

“I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone as it can give you a sense of what you may want to do. There are so many different areas in which you can work at Doncaster Council so there is an option for everyone.”

“Starting out as an apprentice with Doncaster Council was a simple process. I had an interview with different teams to see where I would fit in best.

“The team that I joined was called Adult, Family and Community Learning (AFCL). When I first started my apprenticeship my manager and colleagues were very welcoming and helpful.

“My role included answering telephone calls, printing and scanning, updating databases, using spreadsheets and going out and meeting some of the learners on the courses.

“I chose an apprenticeship because I thought it would be a great starting point to go into the world of work and so it proved to do just that!

“I am now working for the Accounts Payable Team and my current role includes updating databases, paying invoices and dealing with customer enquiries.

“I would recommend the Doncaster Council Apprenticeship Programme to anyone as it helped me secure permanent employment while gaining valuable experience, confidence and meeting new people.”

“If I hadn’t done my apprenticeship I feel like I would definitely lack those simple (yet vital) skills and I couldn’t be happier. I would recommend the opportunity to become an apprentice to anyone.”

15

Natalie

“I don’t think I’ll ever look back and I’ll never regret making the choice to skip out on university. Doing my apprenticeship is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

“It made me realise different things about myself as a person and definitely pushed me into being more confident. I feel like I’ve done a lot of growing up too. I now work as a full-time Partnership Support Officer at Doncaster Council and provide support to all managers in Modernisation and Engagement, which can be pretty hectic sometimes! Before my apprenticeship I was disorganised and terrible at prioritising tasks.

“Going on my apprenticeship definitely helped me with this. In Customer Services you had to make sure you were in on time, work in a timely manner and juggle the job with the programme. Now, I’m involved in Talking Point sessions in which we speak to carers in Doncaster and gather information about their experiences. I’ve also worked alongside the organisation FutureGov who promote innovative ways of working.

It made me realise different things about myselfas a person

Joanna

“When I finished college I knew that I didn’t want to go to university. I was ready to get in to ‘the real world of work’. Upon joining Doncaster Council I’d heard many good things about the Apprenticeship Programme and I wasn’t disappointed.

“I received a huge amount of support from the Apprenticeship Team and I was also fortunate enough to work in various teams within Doncaster Council. I attended regular on the job training which allowed me to gain copious amounts of skills and knowledge alongside completing my qualification.

“I have since gained permanent employment within Doncaster Council and I am currently completing Customer Service Level 3 alongside my job. As Web Editor for Business Doncaster I not only manage the web content such as news stories and events, I also manage social media accounts for my team and Visit Doncaster. I also provide live social media feeds at large events, such as the Rail Conference 2015, Teen Tech and the Business Showcase.

“My apprenticeship prepared me for my customer facing role and I know that if I hadn’t been given the opportunity to complete an apprenticeship, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I would recommend it to anyone.”

“As a single parent to my daughter aged 5, I was looking for a long term job opportunity which would also allow me to progress into a career. I looked on Doncaster Council’s website and found an apprenticeship position.

“At first I thought I would be too old to do an apprenticeship, but after reading through the vacancy, I soon realised there is no age restriction.

“I applied online through Doncaster Council’s website and received an email of confirmation. The process was quick and simple and I felt I had the support of the Apprenticeship Team from the very beginning. “Starting out on the Apprenticeship Programme with the council was a great way to gain my qualifications in my chosen career path whilst gaining invaluable on the job training and experience. I gained employment after finishing school but I knew I wasn’t in the career I wanted. I made the decision to start an apprenticeship as it allowed me to earn and learn whilst working towards the career path of my choice.

“An opportunity arose at Central Children’s Centre which is based no more than a bus trip away from my home. All of the staff at Central Children’s Centre were very friendly and I fitted in immediately.

“Being at the centre helped to develop my teamwork skills. I saw that people in the council worked hard in their job and as a team everyone stuck together to work through any issues. I quickly became confident working with children and families and when a job opportunity arose I jumped at the chance and applied. I, along with my fellow apprentices, gained a qualification and got a job as a Play and Development Worker.

“My role now allows me to run and support playgroups for children aged 0-5. I plan and evaluate sessions in line with EYFS guidelines and help parents and carers to support development. I may help with concerns and issues that service users have and I support children in their growth. I am now working towards my Level 3 qualification and am looking forward to future opportunities; all of this is the result of being an apprentice with Doncaster Council….and of course some hard work.”

Catherine

“Choosing to do an apprenticeship with Doncaster Council was one of the best choices I have ever made. I’ve worked in two separate placements and both have given me the skills and the opportunities to work with lots of different people as well as gain knowledge about different disabilities. Being 26 with two children I didn’t think I would be able to do this, but with support from my Assessor at every step this was possible for me.

“I’ve found that being an apprentice is one of the best ways to get into the Healthcare sector. I have worked alongside experienced staff which has led me to be offered a 30 hour contract within the company once I have finished my Apprenticeship. Anyone of any age can apply and the process is so easy. If you are unsure of what career you would like to take Doncaster Council has many different apprenticeships that are open for everyone.”

Alex

“Dad, I want to be a plumber!” Those were the words of Alex Holman who was in sixth form at the time studying for her A Levels when she realised that algebra or the works of Victorian poets wasn’t for her. “It came as a big surprise to my family and friends, but once I’d made my mind up, that was it – I wanted to get out there into the world of work and get myself a trade!”

After a couple of years working as a Plumber for a private company, Alex joined Doncaster Council as a Heating and Ventilation apprentice in 2009. “I loved it from the word go. My knowledge and skills really benefited from the variety of projects I was involved in, there was always something different and the hands-on training not only puts your skills into practice but boosts your confidence in a working environment too. “Working while also gaining qualifications gave me the best of both worlds.” After completing her apprenticeship, Alex went on to become a Craft Team Leader in July 2015 and she was then appointed as the new Production Manager for Public Buildings Maintenance. “I thoroughly enjoy the role because it’s challenging and rewarding. Choosing to do the apprenticeship certainly proved to be the right decision for me because I now have a career that I love.

“I’d encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to just go for it – it could be the best decision you’ve ever made.”

Working while also gaining qualifications gave me the best of both worlds

Sam

Sam is a Heating and Ventilation apprentice who also gained experience in plumbing. She has been using her skills in a variety of large scale and smaller projects including working in schools, academies, local properties and the stadium.

“I’m loving the hands on, practical experience of the Apprenticeship Programme and having two skills will certainly benefit me in the long run.

“There’s so much more to apprenticeships – not only are you learning new skills, but you are gaining confidence in the workplace and making new friends too.

“There’s a great atmosphere and I enjoying coming into work. I would recommend it to anyone!”

“Being an Electrician is something that I’ve always wanted to do. My dad is an Electrician so he’s really supportive of what I’m doing.

“One of the best parts of the job is being involved in a project from start to finish and seeing the work progress. The good feedback that we get is always very rewarding.”

Where can wetake you?Career progressionApprenticeships can give you a real advantage when it comes to employability. The experiences and skills you gain alongside your qualification are extremely appealing to employers.

Our apprentices have been very successful in securing employment. In fact an impressive 92% of apprentices who completed their apprenticeship in 2014/15 went on to gain employment or further education.

There are potential progression opportunities, moving from a Level 2 onto a Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship) and access to further development and training if you secure employment in the council.

We offer standalone Levels 3, 4, 5 and 7 qualifications as well as apprenticeships, and if a team needs something new we source a training provider to deliver it. For example recently we have worked with our Highways Team to create three Level 3 Civil Engineering Apprenticeships delivered by Sheffield College. Keep an eye out for these types of opportunities. The next zone “I’m interested... what next?” will tell you where to look.

As an employer of choice we invest in the development of people. Many of our employees go through our Leadership and Management Development Programmes. Up to six Management Development Programmes are delivered annually, each comprising of seven full day modules. Alongside this, staff can also undertake a Level 3 or 5 qualification in Management and Leadership.

Our more senior leaders and managers access the Leadership Academy, as part of which they can achieve a Level 7 qualification in Strategic Management and Leadership. In 2014/15, 91 people completed the Management Development Programme and 12 completed the Leadership Academy. This year, to date, 69 people have enrolled.

An extensive amount of our mandatory and core council learning is delivered via the award winning Learning Zone and as an apprentice you would benefit from accessing training via the interactive platform. Doncaster Council’s Learning Zone won the Learning Pool Live Regional Organisation of the year North 2014 and provides a range of interactive modules to staff and partner organisations. E-learning is a quick, efficient way of learning that can be carried out at your own pace and accessed via PCs, tablets and mobile phones.

Plenty of our training is still delivered in the classroom and there really is so much on offer from manual handling to project management.

What can it lead to?You’ve read a number of our apprentice’s stories throughout this prospectus, telling you what their apprenticeship has done for them.

The opportunities for career progression are vast. Read on to find out more about the career journeys of some of our employees who started out as apprentices...

Christian

“Back in the summer of 89, Sky TV was officially launched in the UK, the Berlin Wall was just about to be brought down, 27million people watched Coronation Street’s Alan Bradley get fatally run over by a Blackpool tram, and I had just met the careers Adviser at Hayfield School, who mentioned a career in Local Government. “I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t my first chosen career option, I was thinking more West End Shows, but then I got to hear about the amazing training I could undertake whilst working for the council and I thought wow I kind of think this is my place to shine! “The first day for an apprentice is always really quite daunting, you’ve left the safety net of school and all of a sudden you’re working with people the same age as your mum and dad. My first opportunity was with the Education Directorate, looking back it felt a bit like the film Mary Poppins and the scene with the Bank Managers, you referred to people by Mr or Mrs, there were no computers and the photocopier had its own room… it was great! Of course I was really fortunate to work with some amazing individuals both past and present. Being an apprentice and immersing yourself in working life, learning from colleagues both good and bad really does help shape you into a modern Local Government Officer.

“Looking back, I was so lucky to undertake an amazing training programme tailored to meet my needs as well as the council. In my wildest dreams I never ever thought I would be able to undertake diploma and degree level qualifications whilst working. The qualifications have helped me immensely, however it is the mentoring from the various staff and partners, which I have found really invaluable. “So that’s my story! I’m now heading up a team of specialists who deal in both UK and EU funding programmes worth tens of millions of pounds. I made myself a promise that I will always continue to be a strong advocate for apprentices, I believe you have the potential to become the future Managers, Officers, Directors of our Authority in the future, and if I can help in that journey please let me know…”

“The Apprenticeship Programme was the best choice I had ever made. I worked towards a Business and Administration Level 2 and this gave me experience of working in a business environment and working in an office. I have become more confident and open minded throughout my apprenticeship.

“I worked in the Apprenticeship Team and they were really supportive. I had the chance to shadow some of my colleagues and experience what they do.

“Soon I was offered a temporary job with the Communications Team helping a member of staff create the new intranet for the Council. In addition to this, I would sit twice a week with the team contacting reporters and dealing with phone calls.

“I have now worked full time for 10 months with my current team who are wonderful. Being an apprentice has helped me develop my skills in everyday life, built my knowledge about our community and the services within Doncaster Council.

“My confidence has improved massively and I wouldn’t be in the position I am in today if I didn’t choose the apprenticeship route. I would recommend being an apprentice to anyone because you are gaining a qualification while learning and gaining new skills and experiences.”

“When I left school at 16 I started a Level 2 apprenticeship in Business Administration with Doncaster Council. It gave me an opportunity to learn new skills and gain on the job experience. This allowed me to secure a full time position and progress to complete my Level 3 Business Administration.

“Since then I have secured the role of Business Support Manager for the Educational Psychology Service, completed a Level 3 Management Programme and have started Business Administration Level 4. I feel that this path has supported my learning style better and has given me the experience needed that employers look for.

“I chose an apprenticeship over going to sixth form and university as I prefer being hands on and getting to learn the job whilst doing it. It gave me invaluable knowledge into the organisation, which then put me a step ahead of other candidates.”

An apprentice with the Children in Care Education Service, Stephanie’s role is to provide Business Administration support to her team. “My confidence has grown so much since I became an apprentice. I’ve taken myself out of my comfort zone and done things that I previously wouldn’t have had the confidence to do. My friends and family say they have all noticed a difference in me. “When I wake up in the morning, I really look forward to coming into work.” Stephanie studied Business Administration at college before moving onto volunteering at Voluntary Action in Scunthorpe. She saw the apprentice opportunity advertised on the Doncaster Council website and decided to give it a go. This was in April 2014 and she hasn’t looked back since. “My first placement was in the Fostering Team. I then transferred to the Children in Care Education Service. “I was not the best at adapting to change and the move was a challenge for me as it felt a lot like starting again, but I feel like I have adapted well and that I fit into my new team and role nicely.Doncaster Council is a great place to work with so many opportunities.”

Connor Cassidy, 21, was an apprentice

‘Facebook guy’ for his social media

wizardry!

Connor became the driving force

behind the PBM facebook page where

he successfully combined images of

some of the latest projects the team

upbeat writing style.

“It wasn’t the only part of my role but I made sure I included

about the work we’re doing,” added Connor, who now has a

permanent role in the council as a Highways Technician.
