With the new requirements for Apprenticeships, you will now have to formally assess Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) and Employee Rights and Responsibilities (ERR). These are short, bite-size, portfolio assessed BTEC qualifications which learners will complete as part of their induction. These qualifications make it easy for you to deliver this part of the BTEC Apprenticeship. They can be contextualised to the setting in which the learner will undertake their Apprenticeship, keep them engaged and give them a sense of achievement early on in the Apprenticeship.

Pearson Work Based Learning provided Derby College with BTECs, BTEC Apprenticeships, NVQ and QCF qualifications from Edexcel.

Derby College were impressed that Edexcel could provide online certification for learners. Online certification enables Derby College to apply for release of funding faster, and learners are able to progress opportunities as soon as their qualification is complete.

Derby College was looking for a qualification package that included Apprenticeships because of the benefits for employers. Kath Schofield said: “We found that 81% of our employers found that employing apprentices generated higher overall productivity for their company. 92% agreed that their Apprenticeship programme created staff who were more motivated and had increased job satisfaction.”

Derby College has been able to offer employers real bottom-line benefits through the delivery of Edexcel qualifications. Derby College found learners who complete work-based learning qualifications are more productive employees, improving employers’ overall staff retention.

“We have a 98% achievement rate and a 79% success rate, which means that 81% of our learners are retained” said Kath Schofield.
