Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

This story comes from Rev. Russell Anderson, a former pastor of my parents. It seems that Pastor Anderson and his family were on their way to church for the Good Friday service. As they approached the church, they noticed a huge party in the parking lot across from the church. Pastor Anderson said that he could not help but notice the wide difference between the two events: Good Friday service and the wild party night at the local nightspot. He goes on to describe the revelers as “attempting to seize life by fleeing from death.” He describes the worshipers as “those who discover life in death.”

Then Pastor Anderson says something startling, “Be warned! Those in the sanctuary must not look down their noses in judgment on the revelers. We are not better than they. Our challenge is to celebrate life in such joy and love that they will be attracted to our party. The Christ who turned water into wine and transformed death into a dance is the life of the party that has no end. All are invited.”

One of the challenges of the twenty-first century Christian church is to attract the Post-Modern generation to church. Post-Modern is the name of the current generation that is raising children. They are attracted to organizations that seek to make a difference. Therefore, service is very important to them. And, relationships are important. They “have no time” for church politics. And, when conflict arises, they will just choose to go elsewhere. Positive, make-a-difference, family-oriented organizations are the most attractive to the generation that all denominations strive to attract.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is a wonderful, powerful, positive story to share with all people. Genuine care and concern for all families and all generations in those families should be a natural

emphasis for the Christian church. Making every phase of life, ministry, and faith family-oriented ought to naturally flow from Jesus’ love and respect for children. Post-Moderns yearn to be part of a purpose, a mission, which can change lives and help others in need. The church, the Christian church, the Lutheran church, this Lutheran church, has the Benevolent God, the inspiring Jesus Christ, and the empowering Holy Spirit to draw all generations to its mission.

“Our challenge is to celebrate life in such joy and love that they will be attracted to our party.”

Christ is risen! Alleluia! Amen!

Memorial DayOver the years, Memorial Day has become a big holiday weekend.

Page 6: April 2014 - newjerusalemlutheran.weebly.comnewjerusalemlutheran.weebly.com/.../7/7/7/37779969/m… · Web viewto worship God, to spread God’s Word, and to care for God’s people

It’s now the unofficial start of summer, rather than a day of tribute to the departed it was originally meant to be. Even if we plan fun events for Memorial Day weekend, it’s important to stop long enough to bow our heads and pay respect to our departed loved ones—especially those who fell in battle while helping preserve America’s liberties. Let us take time to make the pilgrimage to various cemeteries and pause long enough to say, “Thank you, Father, for these special lives, for sacrifices made and for friendships we have shared.” (Reprinted from The Newsletter Newsletter)

CONGRATULATIONS to Dana Wartzenluft on receiving her First Holy Communion on Palm Sunday, April 13. We welcome her to the Lord’s table.

CONGRATULATIONS to Nathan and Rebecca Keller on the birth of their daughter, Annabell Christina Keller, who was born on Monday, April 21, at 11:52 p.m. She weighed 7 lb. 12 oz. and was 21 inches long. Her great-grandparents are Dallas and Anna Angstadt.

As a Mother

Jesus, as a mother you gather your people to you; you are gentle with us as a mother with her children. Often you weep over our sins and our pride, tenderly you draw us from hatred and judgment. You comfort us in sorrow and bind up our wounds; in sickness you nurse us, and with pure milk you feed us.

Jesus, by your dying we are born to new life; by your anguish and labor we come forth in joy. Despair turns to hope through your sweet goodness; through your gentleness we find comfort in fear. Your warmth gives life to the dead; your touch makes sinners righteous.

Lord Jesus, in your mercy heal us; in your love and tenderness remake us. In your compassion, bring grace and forgiveness; for the beauty of heaven may your love prepare us.
