President’s Message Jim Purcell

As most of you know we have been in the process of finalizing a slate of candidates to serve on the CCSB Board of Directors for the upcoming fiscal year. Several Board posi-tions have opened up this year providing an opportunity for other members to offer their services to the club. After serving two terms as President, I am very pleased with the prospect of passing the gavel to Peter Mackins who graciously offered up his name to serve in that role. Ivy Aanderud, having served admirably as our Activities Director, will be handing off that responsibility to Tony Megowan, who is currently serving as our club Historian.

I am also very delighted that Ray Tracy has offered to pick up the role of club Historian. Finally, on behalf of the entire CCSB membership, I would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the re-maining Board members for expressing their desire to continue in their current role for another term. Pend-ing circumstances to the contrary, the following slate of officers will be presented and voted upon by the at-tending club members at the CCSB Monthly meeting on Tuesday May 5, 2015.

President Peter Mackins Vice President Judy Purcell Secretary Sandy Rubel Treasurer Fred Lopez Membership Pat Bloom Public Relations Fred Smith Historian Ray Tracy Activities Director Tony Megowan NCM Ambassador Frank LoMonaco

NOTE: Please save the date as formal installation of the elected Board of Directors will take place at the Annual CCSB Installation Picnic on Sunday June 7th, 2015 at Stow Grove Park.

Enjoy a live matinee performance at the PCPA Marian Theatre in Santa Maria on Satur-day May 2nd as Professor Henry Higgins makes a wager that he can raise a lowly Cock-ney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to the status of a high-society debutante in Lerner and Loe-we's hit musical, My Fair Lady. If you cancel after that date you will still be obligated to pay for the tickets you reserved. The two hour performance begins at 1:30pm. Following the performance we will plan to

have an early dinner at the nearby Olive Garden Restaurant. Corvette Maintenance and Preservation Department Debuts at National Corvette Museum

2013 and 2014 were record years for car donations at the National Corvette Museum, with 13 being received last year, and 12 in 2013 bringing the grand total of Museum-owned Corvettes to 62. For sev-eral years the goal has been to launch a department focused solely on maintenance and upkeep of these prized Corvettes. That goal is now a reality. Phillip Wheeler and Daniel Decker have joined the Museum's new Vehicle Maintenance and Preservation Department, dedicated to maintaining cars for both the Museum and Motorsports Park. The Museum's maintenance department will initially be located just

past the Engineering and Design display area, in what was once the PDI Department. Visitors to the Museum may periodically see Phil and Daniel working in the garage bay, adding another exciting element to the Muse-um tour experience.

We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day to cruise along the central coast and over picturesque countryside on our journey to Jala-ma Beach. Ten Corvettes, most with tops down or their roof pan-els off, enjoyed brilliant sunshine and warm breezes for the 50 mile trek to this isolated stretch of surfer’s beach. For the first 22 miles we were treated to spectacular views of the Pa-cific Ocean and the Channel Islands along the Gaviota Coast. The caravan of ‘Vettes then proceeded through the lush green rolling hills on Highway 1 to the Jalama Road turnoff. From there it was another 14 meandering miles through farmland, valleys and pastures with sev-eral hairpin turns sprinkled along the way.

Our final approach to Jalama Beach provided a breath-taking view of the coastline from several hundred feet above the surf. Descending the final stretch we soon found ourselves at the beachside icon known as Jalama Beach Grill, home of the world famous “Jalama Burger”. Picnic tables were plentiful and we had no problem claiming several that were strategically located with panoramic views of the coastline and surrounding hillsides. For those who indulged, the Jalama Burger did not disappoint. It is one phenomenal creation and most worthy of its reputation. After a couple of hours of soaking up the sunshine and sa-voring the ambience, one by one, our members wandered home taking the various routes available from northern Santa Barbara County. The return home provided a great opportunity to follow Alisal Road through the oak-covered canyon from No-joqui Falls to Solvang. Pale green Spanish moss dangled profusely from the many oak trees, some of which are more than three hundred years old. Of course, it’s always a treat to stop over in the Danish village of Solvang for a little wine tasting, creamy fudge, and ice cream or just stroll through its many quaint and curious shops. As always, returning home over San Marcos Pass provides a fantastic aerial view of San-ta Barbara and the Goleta Valley. Overall, it was one fantastic way to spend a day with our Corvettes. If you weren’t able to join us this time I hope you can make it on our next adventure.

Why I’m Runnin’ to Bunnin’ Hib Halverson

Now that Leo Bunnin has owned the Chevy store here in town for about nine months, I thought I'd tell the club about some of the changes Bunnin Chevrolet has made in its service department. They've hired more technicians. They installed a couple more racks. They're buying additional tools and equipment. For example, they just put in the latest technology in Smog Check machines. Bunnin apparently, is, also, making a run at selling tires. Last time I was there, I saw they were advertising most any tire brand at 10 bucks a tire over cost. That's not a bad deal. Maybe, the next time I need some tires, I'll go looking there. Chris Williams, Dir. of Fixed Operations, is the guy in charge of the Service Department and he's making a serious effort to correct some of the problems which existed in that department under the store's previous owners. In the past, some of those problems have made some Club members reluctant to consider the local dealer as a source of service for their Corvettes. My spin on that is: maybe it's time to give them another chance. Bunnin has become my service facility of choice when I have certain kinds of work needing to be done on my Corvettes which I can't do myself. This means warranty repairs, suspension alignment and Smog Checks. Of late, my experiences with the Service Department have been really good. Late last July, just before the 2014 Caravan and right after Leo Bunnin bought the dealership, I discovered the cylinder heads on the LS7 in my Z06 had some defective valve seats, so Bunnin Chevrolet replaced the heads under warranty. The folks at Bunnin quickly verified my diagnosis, ordered a new set of heads from GM and installed them. All that was done in time for me to run the car on PreRun 6 which was a trip down to AutoClub Speedway at Fontana to drive our exit route out of the raceway to I-15 then show up, a week later, on Caravan Departure Day, ready for the 5000-mile round trip. Since then, I've had three of our vehicles in for Smog Checks at Bunnin, another trouble free process. I ring-up my pal James, a service writer there, check to see if he can fit in a Smog Check and if he can, I drive right down there. If he can't, I make an appointment a slot in the near future. Each time I've done this, Glenn, the Service Technician who runs the emissions testing, gets the test done as quick as possible. Then, I pay my bill and I'm out of there. In fact I did this yesterday with my 2001 Camaro. I was back home in about an hour. Hey, I even get a free set of genuine, Delco paper floor mats. Can you see me doing my "happy dance"? Ok seriously, folks...Chevrolet Service has a new look during "Bunnin era" and what I see is a good thing. But what about car sales? Well, compared to the amount of cars the dealership was selling before the owner-ship change, so far, Leo Bunnin's tenure as dealer principle is a bang-up success. They're selling about three times the amount of cars per month. In fact, I've ordered your Secretary and my Wife, the Fairest Sandra the Red, Duchess of Goleta, a new Ca-dillac ATS-V from Bunnin. I've been dealing with Juan Miller, who's Bunnin's go-to guy for cars which are spe-cial ordered. So far, the process at the dealership level has been quick, trouble free and a pleasure. As for Cadillac itself? Well...GM's premium brand needs to get its act together on making available information, specifications and pricing for new cars. The ATS-V was announced last Fall and Cadillac, then, announced orders were being taken in late February. At this writing, on 3 April, dealers still have no price information. My questions-via-email to Cadillac's media representatives about this just go unanswered, but....I digress.

Those of you who know Sandy and I are no doubt wondering: you have no space left in your driveway and garage. What are you going to do with yet another car? Well...we're actually going to have a net reduction in our "fleet". The Chevy HHR Sandy drives now is going up for sale and I'm going to sell our 1995 ZR-1.

Bottom line? One reason everyone's runnin' to Bunnin is because they are making an effort to correct some of the Corvette service problems the dealership has had in the past and they are moving metal in the used and new car departments. You might want to try out the new, Bunnin, Chevrolet/Cadillac.

April Birthdays:

Update on Ed Clerkin: From January 22nd:I had my L4/L5/S1 back surgery on 1/8. I am pretty much past the pain and walking twice a day. I am supposed to be walking 1.5 to 2.5 miles a day by month end and I am up to 1.4 a day so far. Not sure what's in store for me with PT but that won't start until sometime week 6. I cannot drive until after my first Dr visit and X-ray review. From January 23rd - Yes, very successful! No more tingling, numbness down left leg! It was a huge relief getting past this surgery. Not sure when or if I can get low enough to get in the vette to drive it again. From March 26th: I just had my 3rd office follow up yesterday. Doc says X-rays look good but I am not out of the woods yet. I still need to wear my back brace 2 more months THEN start PT. PT will likely be water aerobics or swimming or light exercise. I can drive to/from SLO but not long distance like SB. Meanwhile, I am walking 2-5 miles a day and working on going back to work on 5/4. I also lost 10lbs since surgery and nothing fits!

Our current membership is 96 with 78 Corvettes.

Lompoc Murals Walking Tour and Luncheon Jim Purcell

Come join us on Saturday April 25th

to experience yet another jewel nestled right here in our own back yard in the Santa Rita Hills of the Lompoc Valley. Tourists from all over the world stop to visit Lompoc’s Big Art Murals and Art Alley sponsored by the Lompoc Mural Society. Contained within just a few square blocks of downtown Lompoc, there are more than 30 fascinating murals painted by noted artists commissioned by the society.

Our tentative plan is to gather at 9:00am at the 76 Service Station at the Winchester Canyon exit on High-way 101 in Goleta. We will travel up Highway 101 to Highway 1 into Lompoc where we will congre-gate in the parking lot adjacent to the Visitor’s Bureau. Rich & Mary Nohr will meet us there along with a mural society artist/docent who will guide us on a 90 minute walking tour. There will be a handout, so Mary has requested that we each bring a pencil and clipboard (or notepad) to write on. I can’t say exactly what they have up their sleeve this time, but you know it will be something fun. I can assure you whatever it is will be entertaining and likely be mentally challenging. Upon conclusion of our Murals tour we will proceed to Rich & Mary’s estate in Solvang where we’ll enjoy lunch and refreshments on their impressive Tuscan-styled patio. We plan to collect $10 per person from those that sign up to cover the cost of food and refresh-ments. We’ll need a headcount by April 18 so don’t hesitate to sign up if you are pretty sure you will be par-ticipating. Ivy Aanderud will have a sign up sheet for this run at the CCSB April Meeting or feel free to contact Jim Purcell directly if you are interested in participating in this run. Further details will be provided to those that sign up. The link below provides a preview and downloadable Mural map. http://explorelompoc.com/directory/murals-lompoc/

Reagan Presidential Library & Petersen Collection Jim Purcell

For the third time in less than a year we found our-selves in Simi Valley once again. The first two were for very entertaining plays at the charming Cultural Arts Center while this time was a visit the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. Thirty CCSB mem-bers, a third of whom are recently new to the club, enjoyed fabulous scenery as our caravan of Cor-vettes drove along the coast, then turned inland along the Santa Clara River Valley, through Grimes Canyon, and over the Santa Susana Mountains.

It was quite a sight to see so many Corvettes cruising along the highways and byways and winding mountain passes. I’d say we drew more than a little atten-tion along the way as we were well-represented by four generations of Cor-vettes; C4’s, C5’s, C6’s and C7’s. Coincidently, as we arrived at the Li-brary, much to our surprise was a contingent of the Solid Axle Corvette Club with a fine collection of C1’s and C2’s on display. All that was missing to round out the complete Corvette blood line was a C3. The automotive theme was further supplemented by a very distinctive selection of automobiles from the renowned Petersen Automotive Collection temporarily on display at the Li-brary. The Library itself was filled with memorabilia, presentations, and imagery from the era leading up to and throughout President Reagan’s two terms in office. Most notable was a stroll through Air Force One and Marine One, the helicopter that often shuttled President Reagan to Rancho del Cielo in the moun-tains above Santa Barbara. It was also very interesting to peer inside an exact replication of the Oval Office, touch a section of the infamous Berlin Wall, and then amble through the Rose Garden on the way to Presi-dent Reagan’s final resting place. Upon leaving the Library our sizable entourage gathered at Viva La Pasta, an excellent Italian restaurant in

the nearby Wood Ranch Shopping Center. It turned out to be yet another fantastic day to be on an exciting

road trip with the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara.
