Book Morsels By Etta Donnell    Count Alexander Illyich Ros‐tov, a young, aristocrat born to “the leisure class” of ex‐clusivity and privilege is A Gentleman in Moscow   the tle, of possibly, one of the 

top five books in contempo‐rary fic on.    As any Russian gentleman, Count Rostov has never worked a day in his life, spent most of his thirty three years “dining, discussing. Reading. Re‐flec ng”, wri ng poetry, col‐lec ng objects d’art. As be‐fits any refined gentlemen, Rostov knows how to pair the best wines with gourmet meals,the glib art of conver‐sa on, conviviality, ‘au courant’ in all things social. As a respite from the tedium of his  country estate the count lived the last four years in his luxurious suite at the fabled Mos‐cow Metropole Hotel where he  o en en‐joyed a schnapps with Audrius, the bar ten‐der, indulged in haute cuisine prepared by the  peerless  Chef Emile.His gracious de‐meanor and good manners endeared Count Rostov  to the en re staff at the Metropole, including   Vasily the  concierge ,  bellhops  Pasha and Petya ,   Marina the  seamstress who du fully  secured   gold bu ons on his jacket, and  Yaroslav  the barber  who trimmed his hair and mustache at the ap‐pointed  me . Nobility has its perks!  In 1922 however, five years a er the Bolshe‐vik revolu on, poli cal upheavals, the shoo ng of the Tsar, Count Rostov’s old ‐world charm and civility become anathema to the communist ideology. Relegated to the lowly status of a bourgeois degenerate Count Rostov finds himself at the Kremlin charged 

with the crime of being born an aristocrat. At his trial the count is labeled  a man with‐out purpose  a “former per‐son” of a vanquished era with “ tles no use to any‐one”. Miraculously spared a firing squad he was placed under house arrest, for life… at the Metropole Hotel.   Should he dare to leave its doors he would be shot.    Banished  from his luxe  suite, stripped of his heir‐looms, save his   classic book collec on , a Breguet clock, his bed,  two chairs and a desk, Count Rostov must learn to survive  in  a  ny  a c, a space  reserved for butlers and lowly  serv‐ants .All other  possessions including his country  estate 

confiscated  would become   “the property of the people.” Used to a “life unrushed “the count carefully contemplates his predica‐ment. He   judiciously opens a book of essays wri en in 1555 by Renaissance philosopher Michel de Montaigne. Therein he reads and takes seriously the advice, “If one did not master ones circumstances, one was bound to be mastered by them”. And so begins a thirty‐ two year epic and sweeping saga, A Gentleman in Moscow, within an ocean of proletariat comrades.   Wri en in warm, anecdotal style (with fasci‐na ng digressions) author Amor Towles em‐ploys wit, unruffled op mism, candor, grace and humor with an uncanny ability to bond the reader with   complex characters, so vivid‐ly depicted they transform the way we per‐ceive fic on and understand history. Vod‐kalicious!
