MATH CHALLENGE : BEANIE BABIES Profit— or— Loss ? ?

Additional Challenges from previous issue : 1. Are any of the National Champion trees taller than a 15-story building? 2. How many people holding hands would it take to go around the giant sequoia?

Figure this ! Math challenges for families

Answers to Additional Challenges : (1.) Assuming that a typical story is 12 feet high, 15 stories would be about 180 feet high. Thus, the coast Douglas fir, the coast redwood, the giant sequoia, and the sugar pine would be taller than a 15-story building. The loblolly pine would be about the same height. (2.) Assuming that the arm span (with arms outstretched when holding hands) of a typical person is about 60 inches, it would take about 17 people to encircle the tree.

+ ? - ? + ? - ? + ? - ? +

Figure This! Imagine that you bought a Beanie Baby™ for $6, sold it for

$7, bought it back for $8, then sold it for $9. How much profit did you

make ?

Hint: Would it change your calculations if the second Beanie Baby™

were different than the first?

Calculations can often be done in several different ways. As long as the

reasoning is correct, the result will be the same. Calculating, predicting,

and reporting profit and loss are critical business skills.

Here Is A Joke/Riddle To Tell Your Friends

There was a person going from a flight from Newark, New Jersey to Boston. While landing, he gets excited and yells “BOSTON BOSTON”. The flight attendant says “be silent”! Then the person says “OSTON OSTON”. Why?

Answer: the person misunderstands the flight attendant saying b silent when it’s supposed to be, be silent.

Here Is A Math Trick To Amaze Your Friends

First, tell your friends to pick any number. After you have done that, tell them to multiply the number with 2. Then ask them to multiply their answer with 5. Ask them to give you their answer. After they have told you the answer they came up with, you just drop the last 0 from the right and that’s their original number.

Now let’s try it. For example, my friend picked the number 3. He multiplies the number 2 to it. The answer is 6. He multiples the answer with 5 which equals to 30. He gives me the answer 30. I just drop the last 0 from the right which equals 3. Now, isn’t that what my friend picked.

Something To Think About By Abigail Schmitt, Grade 4

I always think about Easter in April. Every April, I look forward to the chocolate covered coconut eggs my family gets. They taste so good. Easter eggs, bunnies and all things Spring, fill my head! I love to see the bees on the small purple flowers when they pop up on my lawn! And oh, how excited I get on Easter eve night! Peter Cottontail coming down the bunny trail… hipitty, hopitty, Happy Easter Day ! So, here is something to think about.

Why does the Easter Bunny bring eggs ?
