Either way you wear it, this reversible apron setsthe scene for the days tasty fare. Learn how to combine

and resize embroidery designs to create the Paris caf scene. For thereverse side of the button-on bib, use an embroidery design of your choice.

CREATE THE PARIS CAF DESIGN Note: Te directions that follow werewritten to correspond to the commandsin MasterWorks software. If you owndifferent embroidery design software, readthrough these directions and adapt them towork with your design software programas needed.

1. Open MasterWorksby double clicking on theMasterWorks icon on the desktop.2. o set up the workspace for thisproject, click on View Menu andchoose Select Hoop from the drop-down menu.3. Select the 160mm x 260mm hoopand place a checkmark in Rotate 90.Click OK. Te hoop will be placed onthe workspace and will set the design-size parameters. Note: If you have an embroidery ma-chine with a smaller embroidery eld, you can still follow these directions but your nished design will be smaller andwill not ll the apron square entirely.

4. o retrieve the rst design,click on Open Design iconon the top toolbar. Following themanufacturers directions for locatingthe designs on the computer, selectdesign #20909 and click on Open.5. o resize the design and position iton the left side within the hoop outline:a. Select the design by clicking on AllItems under Sequence View.b. Under the ransform Property eld,remove the checkmark from Maintain

Aspect Ratio.c. Change the Width to 100mm andthe Height to 140mm; click on Apply.d. Slide the cursor over the designand when it becomes a Hand icon,left click on the design and move thedesign to the left side of the hoop.

o nudge the design to the top ofthe hoop, hold down the Ctrl key

while clicking on the Up arrow on thekeyboard. Te design will move witheach click of the mouse.6. o retrieve Lulu, click onOpen Design icon on the top

Eiffel ower, and then cut, paste andresize the remaining part of the design.a. Left click on the downarrow next to the Stitch iconon the left toolbar and select theLasso tool.b. o select the stitches on the Eiffel ower, left click and drag the cursoraround the tower, drawing a circlelike a pencil. End the circle by doubleclicking the left mouse button where you placed the rst left click on the

mouse. Te areas within the drawncircle will be selected.

c. Click the Delete key on the keyboardto remove the Eiffel ower stitches,leaving Lulu with her umbrella behind.d. Select Lulu and her umbrella byclicking on All Items under SequenceView. Right click on the design andchoose Copy from the list of commands.e. Open the rst workspace named20909 as shown on the tab.f. Right click on the workspaceand choose Paste from the list ofcommands to place Lulu on the same workspace with the caf.g. Resize the girl under ransformProperty by changing the Height to130mm.h. o position the girl to the right ofthe Caf design, slide the cursor over

the design. When it becomes a Handicon, left click on the design and movethe design to the left side of the Caf

design. o nudge the design to thebottom of the hoop, hold down theCtrl key while clicking on the Downarrow on the keyboard. Te design willmove with each click of the mouse.i. Under Sequence View, select All Items. j. On the top toolbar, selectthe Center Align tool tocenter both designs as one in thecenter of the hoop.

k. With all areas still selected, click onColor Sort to eliminate excess thread-color changes. Tis will group likecolors together and will shorten thetime it will take to stitch the design. Tis completes the design for the bib.7. o save as working les in a formatthat your embroidery machine willread, click on File, Save As. Save thedesign as a .blf working le formatunder the Working File folder. Givethe design a name such as Lulus Caf,and then click on File, Save As. Savethe design as a .pes le format or otherformat for your particular machine.8. Hoop one of the 8-inch tansquares with a layer of tear-awaystabilizer underneath and embroider inthe desired colors. Unhoop and removethe stabilizer. Press the panel with theembroidery face down on the ironingboard to remove the hoop mark.

9. Embroider the remaining square withan embroidery design of your choice.

Apron Cutting & AssemblyUse -inch-wide seam allowancesunless otherwise directed.1. From the red print, cut eight2-inch squares.2. From the green homespun plaid, cutone 25 x 44-inch panel for the apronskirt, eight 2 x 8-inch strips for thebib borders, two 2 x 11-inch stripsfor the button panels on the bibs, four2 x 27-inch strips for the shoulderstraps and apron ties, and one 3 x22-inch strip for the waistband.3. Refer to Figure 1 for steps 35. Sewa 2 x 8-inch green homespun stripto the opposite sides of each bib panel.Press the seams toward the borders.4. Sew a red square to opposite ends ofeach of four 2 x 8-inch green strips.Press the seams toward the borders.Sew the resulting strips to the top andbottom edges of each bib panel andpress the seams toward the borders.5. Sew one 2 x 11-inch greenhomespun strip to the bottom edge ofeach bib panel. Press the seam towardthe strip.

6. Fold each 2 x 27-inch greenhomespun strip in half lengthwise

with wrong sides facing. Stitchinch from one short end and the longedges. Clip the corner and turn right

side out. Press. Set two aside for the waistband ties.7. Pin the embroidered and piecedbib sections together with right sidesfacing. uck the raw ends of thestraps between the bib layers, with theouter edges inch from the bib rawedges. Stitch inch from all edges,leaving a 5-inch-long opening in thelower edge for turning and takingcare not to catch the straps in any ofthe stitching other than at the upper

edge. Clip the corners. urn the bibright side out and press. Slipstitch theopening edges together8. Mark the placement for and stitchve vertical buttonholes along thebottom panel of the bib (Figure 2).

9. Optional: Following themanufacturers directions, apply fusibleinterfacing to the wrong side of the

waistband strip for a rm waistband.

10. urn under and press inch alongone long edge of the waistband strip.Snip-mark the center of the band at

the remaining raw edge.11. urn under and press-inch-widedouble hems at two short edges of theapron skirt panel. opstitch. Repeat atthe bottom edge of the skirt. Machine-baste and inch from the upperraw edge of the apron skirt. Mark thecenter of the raw edge with a pin.12. Draw up the bobbin threads togather the skirt so the upper edgets the waistband edge with centersmatching and inch of the waistbandextending at each edge of the skirt. ie off the gathering threads securelyand adjust the gathers evenly. Withthe gathers on top, stitch inch fromthe raw edges between the two rows ofgathers (Figure 3).

13. Remove the row of basting belowthe seam line. Press the waistbandtoward the seam allowance and turnunder and press inch at each endof the waistband so the ends are even

with the skirt edges. On the wrong sideof the skirt, pin the folded edge of theband in place so it just barely covers

the waistband stitching. From theright side, topstitch close to the seamline through all layers, catching theunderside of the band in the stitching(Figure 4) or slipstitch in place by handon the inside if you prefer.

14. uck inch of the shortunnished end of each apron tie intoan open end of the waistband and pinin place. Stitch close to the waistbandends through all layers. Stitch againon top of the rst stitching, and thenstitch again inch from the rststitching (Figure 5).

15. Center the bib over the waistbandand mark button placements under thebuttonholes. Sew buttons in place.
