WORK EXPERIENCE

MASON GILLIBRAND ARCHITECTS - MAY 20TH 2012 TO SEPTEMBER 17TH 2012 (4 MONTHS)

- Over the 4 months with the firm I used 3D modelling software (Sketchup) extensively, and became very competent on Vectorworks. I was a regular visitor to a number of weekly site meetings whilst being involved in, and compilig myself, planning applications for a barn development. I have modelled community site projects, extensions, outbuildings and hotel lodges whilst being closely involved with a period property restoration project. I was also involved in a number of working drawings throughout their development, and the completion of bathroom and bedroom designs and their layout.

WADE GROUP - JULY 2012 TO SEPTEMBER 2012 (2 MONTHS)

- I worked on a number of different sites ranging from relatively complex housing extensions to being Site Supervisor for two school projects. I was able to develop my skills in carpentry and the complexities of construction i.e. laying underfloor heating and the construction of stud partitions, as well as the remodelling of entire school grounds through groundworks.

NORTHERN ESTATE SERVICES LIMITED - MAY 2012 TO JULY 2012 (2 MONTHS)

- Worked on a number of industrial and private sites maintaining their upkeep whilst tending to the remodelling and landscaping of their grounds when necessary. Was involved in the re-curbing of an industrial site near Saint Helens.

SPYROFLOW LTD. (MECHANICAL ENGINEERING) - JUNE 2009 (1 WEEK)

- Shadowed an Engineer who was in the final stages of a food storage silo in Russia designed to store food flavouring powder.

HORTICULTURAL GREEN VEIN, LINCOLN, ENGLAND (Project in Progress)Comprehensive Design Project (Project in Progress)

For years now Lincoln, as a historical city, has been split between the modern university and the rich historical antiquity of Old Lincoln causing a rift within the city which has, ultimately torn the city in two via the High Street.

This is the identification of the ‘Urban Black Hole’ within the cities frayed fabric. I have identified, through scrupulous site analysis, that a positive way to re-engage the city would be through a horticultural walk from East to West Lincoln.

The aim of this walk is to enhance the existing Viking Trail through Lincoln and draw people away from the High Street and reconnect them with the cities beautiful features.

The walk will consist of a number of nodes along the chosen route subconsciously leading the walkers through the city, past landmarks, and through forgotten or hidden gardens.

The use of sculptures to guide the walkers through the trail will be used. These will be in the form of street art, something as subtle as greenery growing from a fracture in a paving stone, to a physical sculpture interacting with a wall or a lamp post.

The possibilities are limitless for this and I aim to discover a number of different ways to represent them.

The walk will end in Liquorice Park where the park will become a sculpture park to tie the walk together. The park will also be used as allotments for a food co-op. The site was previously an allotment site and I aim to revive this and incorporate the local school and community into its development and maintenance, giving them a site to be proud of.



Site Location

Our city location was given to us at the start of the project. From here we decided on a process of investigation and from here came my site.

Linking East to West via established and understated sites.

Paddy Field Concept

My site will house allotments and, due to the sites steep in-cline, the concept the Viet-namese have adopted whereby the allotments are physically carved into the landscape to allow for healthier growth and irrigation, would be the perfect solution to this problem.

Along with this the Allotments can be sculpted in such a way as to become part of the art, not just grow produce.

The years of neglect has left the park in an overgrown and antisocial state. The park,which was given to the community on a 999 year least by the council, was supposed to be a development to celebrate the mil-lennium. However, less than 5 years later the site had already started to be neglect-ed.

It has become a very aggresive and un-friendly place to visit with beer cans and animal waste scattered throughout, it is obvious that nobody has respect for the site.

My proposal aims to rejuvinate the site and encourage the local community to engage in the activities which will go on over the course of the projects life.

The image to the left is the begin-ning of the design process. These lines will determine the positioning and shape of the buildings I will use to form my development.

The lines are determined by the tree canopies. By drawing lines from the outer most part of the canopies we get a grid system which will allow us to develop the buildings with re-spect to the existing landscape.

Two Sections of Site. Similar in appearance yet differing hugely in its physical contours.

The building design is currently in the last stages of development. Once this is all completed then the design can be put in location and its impact can be seen. With its timber cladding finish and greef roof the development will blend into its location seem-lessly, especially once the materials have had chance to settle and weath-er.



YEAR 2 PROJECT 1- AN INVESTIGATION OF PROCESS AND PRODUCTIONUniversity of Lincoln Year 2

CERAMICS WORKSHOP, LINCOLN, ENGLANDARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

BRIEF

To make is to understand. This brief required us to investigate a making process and a suitably designed building to accommodate it. The design should successfully address the building as a machine (literally and metaphorically) and also the notion of this machine as architecture.

The building had to accommodate all that was required in our specific ‘making’ process and also house a ‘front of shop’. The focus of this project was to understand the timeline of production in relation to layout and the relationship of public and private space in a commercial building. We also had to demonstrate a true understanding of the requirements of the user through brief analysis

Particular attention was be paid to the treatment of the external areas of my site and ‘streetscape’ using my analysis of the surrounding urban condition to influence how I designed. Lighting, materials, circulation, access, parking and planting must be resolved in the final design proposal. I also had to consider how my design aesthetic can influence my ‘streetscape’ using, for example, my choice of material pallet, proportional/rhythmic relationships and interior / exterior connections.



Design Development

Development started with identifying the necessary components of a ceram-ics workshop, i.e process of making the clay, shaping an the furnace for baking.

Once areas had been distinguished design was in full flow. Investigations into Roman dwellings began to influence the building shape, as Lincoln was previously a extremely important Roman stronghold.

The initial design came from the Roman dwellings where a contemporary twist was imposed onto the building taking into account views, access and lighting.

Final outcome combines modern concerns with an appreciation for the past.

The Roman trail in Lincoln leads the visitor on a ancient journey, bringing the Roman Lincoln to life. This Roman path pass near my project site, I would to change its course and invite the people to visit the ceramic maker workshop and see his works that will be expose.

This particular area it is not to much explored in terms of commerce, and it is a place used for many people of differ-ent ages.

Redesign the whole site and landscape will be important.

LACE ARCHIVE, NOTTINGHAM, ENGLANDINTEGRATED DESIGN PROJECT

Located within the Nottingham Lace Mar-ket our site should house an archive for the lace along with a number of other functions such as a workshop for lace manufacture as well as a social space, for example a wine bar.

This development housed an archive, a workshop, wine bar/cafe with seating, small theatre and a small gift shop.

The site itself is just outside the centre of the Lace Market allowing for the areas expansion to-wards the surrounding areas.

The Nottingham lace industry is the basis for Nottinghams past successes. It was world renound for its lace and, as a result, the products were demand-ed throughout the world.

The industry has Regal links as the Nottingham producers were the manu-factures of Royal wedding dresses and a number of other items used by the royal family.

BRIEFThis project is based around sustainabil-ity on a social and cultural scale, relat-ing to regeneration, tourism and industry. Throughout the project I will investigate sustainability and technology on a de-tailed building scale.

PART 1 – A Masterplan of a specified site

PART 2 – Small structureI will resolve a small structure both as a design and technical project. The small project will sit in the master-plan and engage with the thinking behind that plan.





Keeper’s Close, Cheshire

A listed building which was originally a hunting lodge. This development had many interesting factors which needed to be considered through the development pro-cess, the main being the buildings fragility and re-strictions.

My involvement in the building was developing the eleva-tions for the extension, working with internal detail-ing and designing and drawing the layouts for all of the houses bathrooms and bedroom layouts.

Isthmus Cottages

Isthmus Cottages was a redevel-opment of an existing hostel.

The bedrooms were completely redesigned and the internal courtyard was resurfaced.

The boat underneath the balco-ny was redesigned allowing for more effective usage.

The integration of solar panels and a green roof has enhanced the buildings sustainability stance.

My Involvement

During my tie at the firm I was involved with this project creating a Sketchup model and creating some renders for the clients and planners.



Linthwaite Lodges

This project was an subterranean Eco lodge development which would house a number of individual lodges to allow for privacy whilst provid-ing the upmost comfort away from home, whilst being the beauty of the Lake District.

My involvement was the initial de-sign development of the lodges and their development through 3D model-ling and their subsequent rendering and adaptation through Photoshop.

Badgergate Farm House

I designed and modelled a number of outbuilding de-signs to house a garage, log store, garden shed and a tennis equipment store.

This was the chosen design and it is currently in further design development stages with the clients.

This was a very fulfilling development as I was given total responsibility for the design and development to the time I left. With input from the partners I was able to develop a comprehensive design which ena-bled the client to utilise the difficult space whilst enhancing the current property.



Riverview Hostel

Riverview was a project that went out to ten-der for a plot of land in Lancaster. The pro-posal I worked on was for a number of residen-tial dwellings, some commercial workshops and for a communal laundry.

The images shown here were all produced by my-self and were solely used in the tender pack-age. The initial site layout was already in place, designed by the client, but the model-ling and photoshop work was done over a weeks work with the firm.



Kerfield Lodge

I worked on the modelling and layout of the underground ex-tension, seen in the renders to the right.

Holden Clough

This building, which is a ‘Herit-age Asset’ is based in the beau-tiful Ribble Valley. The original house had large amounts of land which have subsequently been sold off and given to other parties.

To enclose the house from the land the original owners imported one species of each tree in the UK, making this property the proud owner of the largest collection of different species of trees in Eu-rope.

A collection of window details I was involved in measuring and drawing.



70 Coniston Road, Lancaster

This property was a council house in an estate outside Lancaster. The owners were granted funds to design and build a small disabled toilet downstairs for their disabled son. I was given this project as a rela-tively straight forward beginner project for me.

I developed a design, taking into account the surroundings, and this was recently built and is now com-pleted. With a little guidance from an architect at the firm I was able to successfully create these draw-ings for the family and was suc-cessful in the planning and con-struction stages.



The Following pages show some pan and pencil sketches I have done this year. The first im-age, the Corinthian capital, was a free hand sketch done using pen. The images of the human form were inspired by the artist Cedric Char-leuf, and the remainder are various pictures of Venice.













Gledstone Hall, Sir Edwin Lutyens, nr. Skipton.It’s elegant design is somewhat misleading. With its facade suggesting a non-existant piano nobile, and its ‘unlovable’ exterior, it may be seen as a cold dwelling, however its current refurbishments give the house an entirely new feeling.

This hall, known as the ‘Last English Palace’, was designed by one of the most influen-tial architects of the 20th century. Currently owned by an artist, huge amount of money have gone into its res-toration.

This building was to be the birth of my love for classical architec-ture.
