...for Antarctica

Toyota HiluxThe Toyota Hilux has been used in very hard conditions for over 40 years. It is used and abused almost all around the world. In Iceland it has gained reputation as the everlasting car. The choice for reliability and the vehicle to get the job done.

Arctic Trucks offers modifications to upgrade the Hilux and make it ready for use in Antarctica, from various tasks around the coastal ares to trans Antarctic expedtions. All with the simplicity and reliability of the old Hilux.

Toyota Hilux AT38

AT38 Conversion

With the AT38 modification the Hilux is ready to tackle most snow and ice conditions in Antarctica. The tire pressure can be adjusted to changing conditions, from soft snow to hard ice. Ice screws give the vehicle great traction on blue ice and the softness of the tires smoothens out uneven terrain providing a comfortable ride. While the capabilities have been improved the service and running cost is still similar to a standard Hilux.

The Hilux AT38 is a great vehicle for most coastal areas in Antarctica and is considerably less expensive than the Hilux AT44. Based on our experience, expected fuel consuption is 0.15-0.3 litres pr. kilometer in coastal areas.

Toyota Hilux AT38 was used to drive to the Magnetic North Pole with the British TV show Top Gear in 2007 where it carried the film crew 1400 kilometers, over sea ice, bolder fields and number of small islands. Toyota Hilux AT38 will be stationed at SANEA, the South African research station in Antarctica from 2011.

Toyota Hilux

Toyota Hilux AT44

AT44 Conversion

The AT44 modification was initially designed for support vehicles for long distance expedtions in Antarctica. The large tires with low air pressure provide large footprint giving good flotation in soft snow and soft ride over the sastrugies. The vehicle is set up to carry up to 1.3 tons, plus 1.5 tons on the optional trailer. Fuel capacity (280L in tanks and up to 800L on deck), gives the AT44 Hilux a very long range even on the high plateau.

These vehicles are fitted with safety equipment for crevasses and optional radar can be fitted to search for safe routes. Using the side steps and the winch, a crane can quickly be assembled to work with fuel barrels or other things that need lifting.

Based on our experience, the average fuel consumption on the high plateau is 0.5 to 0.7 litres pr. kilometer using Jet 1A fuel. The fuel consumption is greatly affected by the conditions and the load, but in areas closer to the coast the fuel consumption is considerable lower than mentioned above.

Four vehicles, all with the optional trailer, drove almost 5000 kilometers from Novo airbase to the South Pole and back during the period of December 2008 to February 2009. The cars acted as support vehicles carrying film crews and doctors in the Amundsen Omega 3 Pole Race, as well as carrying heavy loads. In November 2009 these vehicles/trailers drove from Novo to 83 degrees, 1500 kilometers each way.

During November and December 2010 Toyota Hilux AT44 will make three more trips from Novo to the South Pole.

Toyota Hilux AT44 6x6

AT44 6X6 Conversion

Building on a proven 6X6 Hilux with 33 inch tires, Arctic Trucks is now adding a 6x6 Hilux with 44 inch tires (AT44 6x6) to the product range. The benefits of the 6x6 version over the 4x4 are higher load capacity and improved towing ability. The large deck can be fitted with various modules for carrying people, equipment, sleeping arrangement etc. The large deck, as well as extra large fuel tanks, will double or more the driving range. With more traction the 6x6 will have greater pulling capacity in difficult conditions. The new drive line of the 6x6 has been designed to keep the exceptional reliability already known.

The AT 44 6x6 will make its maiden trip in Antarctica in December 2010 end January 2011, driving from Novo to the South Pole and back, supporting a German/Austrian ski race.

Arctic Trucks Trailers

The trailer can be built in various versions depending on use. The design goals are reliability and compatibility to the towing car. Many of the parts, such as wheel bearings, are the same as in the towing car. Parts from the trailer can therefore be used as spare parts in case of emergency. The dimensions, length, width and weight can be adjusted to fit the requirements of the customer and the towing car.

Total load can be up to 1500 kg in normal configuration and more if needed. The weight of the trailer plays important role in off-road ability and should be designed at the same time as the modifications of the towing vehicle.

• Designed to fit each towing vehicle,• Track width same as on the towing vehicle• Load bearing parts (suspension and axle) same as the parts in the towing vehicle• Designed to prevent overload on the towing vehicle• The connection between trailer and towing vehicle is very flexible to improve off-road ability.
