Argentina Plataforma / ARCO
Argentina touches down in ARCOmadrid 2017 to present one of the most active art
contexts on the content. An intense and profound curatorial endeavour by Inés
Katzenstein will make it possible to discover this presence, meticulously prepared for the
occasion. Argentina Plataforma / ARCO, a section that enjoys the collaboration of the
Argentine Ministry for Culture and arteBA, will be one of the highlights of this edition of
the Fair. In support of the Argentine galleries, the president of Argentina, Mauricio
Macri, and his wife Juliana Awada, will attend the ARCOmadrid inauguration
ceremony next 23 February.
A total of 12 Argentine galleries have been selected by Inés Katzenstein, director and
founder of the Art Department of the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, to
take part in the Argentina Plataforma / ARCO programme.
Of the 12 galleries participating in this section, all from Buenos Aires, two will be
attending the Fair for the first time: COSMOCOSA and ISLA FLOTANTE. In addition to
these, there are also others that already participated last year, including BARRO; DEL
INFINITO; HENRIQUE FARIA BUENOS AIRES; IGNACIO LIPRANDI; JORGE
MARA LA RUCHE; NORA FISCH; RUTH BENZACAR and SLYZMUD; as well as
another two returning galleries: MITE and VASARI.
Continuing ARCOmadrid’s focus on presenting artists solo or in dialogue, the galleries of
Argentina Plataforma / ARCO will also present the work of one or two artists, selected
by Inés Katzenstein. The curator’s selection will present 23 internationally renowned
artists, including Alberto Greco; Eduardo Stupia and Mirtha Dermisache, along with
others yet to be discovered by the general public, such as Diego Bianchi, Pablo Accinelli
and Sol Pipkin, thus consolidating ARCOmadrid as a space for discovering and
extending knowledge of creators.
Moreover, the new Dialogues programme will have a special bond with Latin America
thanks to the participation of some Argentine artists handpicked by Inés Katzenstein, in
coordination with the curatorial team, such as Irene Kopelman; Eduardo Navarro; Tomás
Saraceno and David Lamelas, in addition to Victor Grippo; Analia Saban and Julio Le
Parc.
The extensive Argentine presence is evident throughout the Fair. From the country’s
artists represented by international galleries including Leandro Erlich; Eduardo
Basualdo; Claire de Santa Coloma; Guillermo Kuitca; Jorge Macchi; Fabian Marcaccio;
Sebastián Díaz Morales; Adriana Minoliti; Marie Orensanz; Edgardo Antonio Vigo;
Aimée Zito Lema and Mercedes Azpilicueta, to the participation of Argentine galleries in
other programmes such as Aldo De Sousa; Document Art; Maria Calcaterra and Rolf
Art, to take part in the General Programme. Similarly, Ruth Benzacar; Ignacio Liprandi;
Jorge Mara – La Ruche and Barro will also have a space in this section, while Slyzmud
will also participate in Opening, aimed at galleries with a maximum track record of seven
years.
The spatial architecture of the Argentina Plataforma / ARCO galleries, located in
pavilion 7 of the Fair, is based on a museal design by the Argentine architectural firm,
Estudio Clusellas –Mariano Clusellas and Tomás Rowinski-, which proposes an
exhibition space that both respects the autonomy of the guest galleries and the Fair’s
identity while also ensuring sufficient integration for it to be visited as a whole.
In addition to the twelve galleries present in the Argentina Plataforma / ARCO, the Guest
Country will have an institutional pavilion organised by the Argentine Ministry for
Culture. This area will offer a programme, coordinated by Mercedes Pérez Bergliaffa,
that includes round tables relating to collecting and the art market in Argentina and
Latin America, with the participation of Patricia Pearson, Hugo Sigman, Ella Fontanals
de Cisneros, among others, as well as public interviews of fundamental artists in the
history of this country, including Julio Le Parc, and intergenerational and education
workshops in contemporary art, designed with the collaboration of MediaLab Prado.
Cultural dialogue and exchange
The country’s art scene is also reflected at ARCOmadrid in the Forum, which constitutes a
platform for reflection and exchange between the guests and the galleries. Eminent curators,
critics and collectors from Argentina will head up the calendar of the upcoming edition,
including Juan Vergéz; Joaquín Rodríguez & Abel Guaglianone and Alec Oxenford.
In addition, on Friday, 24 February, the ARCOmadrid Forum will dedicate two talks to
the Argentine artists in a round table directed by Agustín Pérez Rubio, art director of
MALBA, Buenos Aires, on Writing, graphism and visual arts, with the participation of
Leticia Obeid and Eduardo Stupia, and a second directed by Manuel Segade, director of
CA2M, Madrid, responsible for Bodies, sexuality and performance with Dudu Alcon
Quintanilha; Marcelo Pombo and Mariela Scafati, both sessions organised by Argentina
Plataforma / ARCO. On the other hand, David Lamelas will be present at the Pacific
standard time: LA/LA talk, to be held on Thursday the 23rd.
The Argentine presence at ARCOmadrid will be completed with the presentation of a
prestigious distinction, the ‘A’ Awards for Collecting bestowed by the Fundación ARCO,
on Eduardo Costantini for his work in spreading Latin American art in the world, and
particularly for the creation of the Museo MALBA de Buenos Aires.
Madrid turns the spotlight on Argentina
Argentina will also enjoy a major deployment throughout Madrid in the shape of various
exhibitions which, under the curatorship of Sonia Becce -independent curator -, will
spread the country’s contemporary art to various spaces in the city. This will all make it
possible to analyse Argentina’s excellent artists while also gaining an overview of the
country’s gallery context, collecting, curating and critics.
One of the highlights will be the group exhibition En el ejercicio de las cosas, curated by
Sonia Becce-Mariano Mayer, with over 50 artists from different generations in 8 venues
in the city: Casa Museo Lope De Vega; Casa de Vacas; Conde Duque; Tabacalera;
Museo Cerralbo; Casa de América; Biblioteca Nacional, and Alimentación30.
Additionally, there will also be other exhibitions such as the Colección Costantini, at the
Real Academia de San Fernando; Diego Bianchi and Luis Garay at Matadero Madrid;
Nicolás Robbio, at La Casa Encendida; Jorge Macchi, at CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de
Mayo, co-organised by MALBA and curated by Agustín Pérez Rubio; Leandro Erlich, in
the Espacio Fundación Telefónica, along with other shows in Caixa Forum, Museo
Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, among others.
To complete its programme in Madrid, apart from screenings in Plaza de Callao and
artist-in-residence programmes in El Ranchito, Casa Velázquez and Media Lab Prado,
there will also be ´Escenas Argentinas`, a cycle of theatre, film and music, organised with
the collaboration of Marcelo Panozzo, set to include the DOMO ARGENTINA
PLATAFORMA ARCO initiative, in Plaza de Colón, with musical performances by
artists such as Juan Gatti + Fangoria; Illya Kuryaki and the Valderramas; Adrian Iaies
Drumless Trio + Eduardo Stupía, and Entre Rios – Cuadro Fulldome 5.1 Live Show.

Argentina Plataforma / ARCO Institutional Pavilion
Architect: Gerardo Caballero
Project selected in a national competition through the Sociedad Central de Arquitectos.
In addition to the twelve galleries present in the Argentina Plataforma / ARCO, the Guest
Country will have an institutional pavilion organised by the Argentine Ministry for
Culture. The artistic and cultural programme of this stand will be presented by the
President of the Nation, Mauricio Macri, and the Minister for Culture of Argentina,
Pablo Avelluto.
To accompany the institutional presentations, this space will host various round tables
on collecting and the art market in Argentina and Latin America, as well as public
interviews of fundamental artists in the history of this country. In line with this, one of
the stand’s first activities will be a public interview of the Argentine artist based in
France, Julio Le Parc. The Swinging Pampa session on Argentine art and artists also
stands out. It consists of manifestos revolving around “Desmitificar el arte” (Manifiesto de
Julio Le Parc, 1968); a dialogue between Julio Le Parc and Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro -
director and chief curator of the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC, NY), and
curator of the next Bienal de São Paulo, in 2018-.
Another important point within this programme will be the creative, educational
workshops and activities, aimed at an intergenerational public. Thus, a first,
unprecedented collaboration between the Argentine Ministry for Culture and MediaLab
Prado will take place with a view to establishing a regular agreement. It will consist of
citizen workshops and laboratories for the experimentation, production and research of
cultural practices. The educational activities around Argentine art scheduled for
ARCOmadrid have been jointly created by both institutions.
The conceptual axes on which practically all the space’s activities are to revolve will be
the Argentine art manifestos and writings by artists, such as the “Manifiesto blanco” by
Lucio Fontana, the “Manifiesto Madí” and “Desmitificar el arte”, by Julio Le Parc, and
the construction by the public of group manifestos within the space of the Argentina
stand.
Finally, the notion of utopian constructions, as well as the possibility of designing
innovative citizenships and cities -in close connection with the proposals present in the
“Hydrospatial City” by the Czech-Argentine artist Gyula Kosice and the cities of the
Argentine artist Xul Solar- will be reflected in the permanent activities and educational
workshops that will take place at the stand.
An interesting conversation about Argentine artists will unfold in “Societies of artists,
clans and communities”, relating to the varied ways and means in which contemporary
artists organise themselves to coexist and create together.
Various performances by contemporary Argentine artists around the Argentine Art
Manifestos will also take place during the Fair.
