6th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo - C6)Geothermal Energy: Solution to Africa’s Energy Needs

1:About

ARGeo - C6

The Government of Ethiopia takes the pleasure to host and organize the Sixth African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C6) in collaboration with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and African Union Commission (AUC). The conference is sponsored by MFA Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA), German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR), US Power Africa and other support partners. The conference is being organized under the auspices of the UNEP ARGeo Programme as one of its biennial geothermal conferences. It will be held at UNCC, Addis Ababa-Ethiopia, from 31st October to 6th November 2016.

The main conference will be held from 2nd – 4th November, 2016. Parallel Geothermal Pre-Conference Short Courses will be held from 31st October to 1st November 2016. A Post conference field trip to Aluto - Langano geothermal field will be held on 5-6 November.

The five previous biennial conferences were held in Ethiopia (2006), Uganda (2008), Djibouti (2010), Kenya (2012) and Tanzania (2014). The aim of this biennial conference is to promote regional cooperation, create an information exchange platform on the exploration, development, investment and utilization of the geothermal resources in theregion and elsewhere in the world.

The conference will provide opportunities for exhibitors to show their projects, products, equipment and services. It will also be an opportune time for business networking with lead personalities and institutions in the geothermal sector from Africa and the rest of the world. In order to expedite geothermal development in Africa, various innovative geothermal support programmes have been initiated in the East Africa region.

The UNEP-ARGeo Programme is one of those programmes - its main objective is to catalyse investments in geothermal development in the region. This programme, through one of ARGeo’s project components, i.e regional networking and information systems, supports countries to host and organize the biennial regional geothermal conferences in coordination with other geothermal support programmes and partners.
