‘Fit to work’ scheme aimed at helping

Welsh rms get sick staff back on jobEMPLOYERS across Gwent are now able torefer thousands of workers who have been onsick leave for more than four weeks to a newfree support service designed to help themreturn to their jobs.

Up to 48,000 employees a year in Wales couldbenefit from the UK Government-backedoccupational health service, known as Fit forWork, which is entirely voluntary for indi-vidual workers and which provides assess-ment, advice and practical support, includinga detailed ‘return to work’ plan.

It is expected to be of particular assistanceto those in smaller businesses – around 70 percent of the workforce – which have little orno access to such services at present. It is alsoavailable to larger employers and organisa-tions, where it can help complement existingoccupational health services.

Independent research carried out by Red-shift Research on behalf of Health Manage-ment Limited released today shows that 72per cent of Welsh employers feel that if theyhad more external support, employees wouldbe able to return to work earlier followinglong-term sickness absence.

In addition to this, 50 per cent of Welshemployees who have been off work for fourweeks or more feel that with more externalhelp they could have returned to work earlierfollowing a prolonged period of sick leave.

Since Fit for Work was launched earlier

this year, GPs in Gwent andacross Wales have been able torefer employed patients to theservice. But from September8 employers will also be ableto offer their staff a referralto the service if they havebeen off sick for four weeks ormore and they consent to thereferral.

Jonathan Hill, lead case man-ager for Fit for Work in Wales,said the GP referrals werealready helping overcome barriers faced byemployees who had been on sickness absencefor four weeks or more.

He said: “By also enabling employers tooffer staff a referral to the service we hopemore people will take advantage of the sup-port that is available to help them return totheir jobs.”

The independent research with a repre-sentative sample of employers and employ-ees revealed that many employers were notsatisfied with their ability to tackle long-termsickness in the work place.

More than half said they wanted to do moreto support and help employees returning towork after a prolonged sickness absence.

More than half (51 per cent) of Welsh em-ployers said they worried about contactingtheir sick employees in case they feel pressur-

ised and similarly 51 per centof Welsh employees said theywould not want their employerto contact them when they areoff work because of sickness.

Fit for Work is intended tohelp to fill that gap by helpingemployees with their returnto work, while removing thepressure that can be placedon both the employee andemployer.

David Frost, co-author of ‘Health at Work-an independent review of sickness absence’, said: “Employers haveasked for a service that will provide rapidaccess for their employees to get practicaladvice on the support they need to make areturn to work.

“The evidence is clear – the longer a personis out of work the harder it becomes to makea successful return to their job. Now Fit forWork has launched, all employees and em-ployers across the country have access to freeoccupational health advice and support forthe very first time. The service will providemuch needed support, particularly to smallbusinesses.”

Ian Price, deputy director of CBI Wales,said: “Long-term sickness absence can be adrain on businesses and have a damagingimpact on employees themselves. The Fit

for Work service will hopefully hethe barriers that prevent people msuccessful return to their jobs afteAllowing employers to get involvein this process has got to be a posifor both businesses and individuabelieve it will result in more peopto work sooner.”

Within two working days of a refor Work, the worker concerned wan in-depth consultation with an otional health professional who wiof the issues that might be prevenfrom returning to work. This willwork-related and wider personal iwell as health matters. They will twith the employee to agree a persoReturn to Work Plan.

The Return to Work Plan will diployees towards services that willovercome any obstacles keeping tfrom work. If the employee gives for Work professionals can also wwith employers to help achieve a rwork. The Return to Work plan wievidence of sickness for pay purping the need for a fit note.
