Grade Point Average and Rank

Class of 2024

Page 22: Argyle High School Parent Meeting

Grade Point Average and RankO AHS uses a 100 point weighted GPA scale.O GPA is cumulative. O It is recalculated each semester.O GPA determines class rank.O The State of Texas says a student can have

automatic admission to any public university if he/she is in the top 10% of the class. The student must complete an application and meet all deadlines. (UT at Austin is the only exception – it is currently the top 6%.)

Page 23: Argyle High School Parent Meeting

Grade Point AverageO Honors courses will be weighted by 7% of the

semester grade. O AP and Dual courses will be weighted by 10% of

the semester grade.O The grade earned will be reflected on the

transcript and report card. The weight is added into the calculation of the GPA.

O Most colleges are making admissions decisions based on the transcript from the end of the junior year.

Time Commitment● Begin studying for tests at least 3 days prior to the exam● Most classes provide time in class during the week to work

on assignments, use your time wisely● Utilize mega-lunch for working on assignments/making up

labs or tests● On average expect to spend 2-3 hours a week on some form

of review, outside practice, note taking, etc.● Beginning of the year is more of a time commitment than

later● English classes require books to be read outside of class

Page 26: Argyle High School Parent Meeting

Study Habits● Tips/Techniques

○ If something new was presented such as notes or formulas practice them that night for 5-10 minutes

○ Utilize mega-lunch tutoring■ The second you don’t understand something go see the teacher

○ Begin studying earlier not later○ Study techniques are not a one size fits all:

■ Flash cards■ Rewriting your notes■ Organizing your notes into a chart/diagram form■ Drawing out your notes/Sketch-notes■ Working through old problems/questions■ ***Teaching someone the material

Page 27: Argyle High School Parent Meeting

Notes/Tests/Labs● Notes

○ more self-guided○ some classes have you write your notes at home prior to class○ some notes can be lengthy based on the amount of information needed

● Tests○ have a level of difficulty that some students are not use to seeing○ more application than rote memorization○ the test review should be seen as a resource, not the end all

● Labs○ most labs must be written up in a composition notebook prior○ graphing and math skills are consistently assessed○ lab grades may be quizzes, analysis, or inquiry-based assessment○ lab reports will be written up on certain labs each semester
