Hello, as I write this there’s a chill in the air telling us that fall is here, fi nally! I believe

most of us across the country would say it was one long hot summer. Fall is often a time of refl ection for many of us and at Golfer’s Guide we are refl ecting too! Looking back at the last year we have made signifi -cant changes to our magazines enhanced our digital assets and we are preparing to launch innovative new marketing solutions for 2012. For details make sure to sign up for our Player’s Club Newsletter.

I can’t tell you how excited I was to be invited to the Re-opening of McDowell Mountain golf course, now owned by PGA great, Phil Mickelson and his partners. The future of golf resides with the next generation and it was inspiring to listen to Mr. Mickelson speak. I hope you enjoy the story on page 6.

I have always been an adventurer and have a passion for the game of golf. I remember fondly trips that took shape on a whim and shagging golf balls on the practice range with my father. With time on this planet so precious and the world so very complicated, I want to encourage you to take the time, explore and above all enjoy a walk on a course. We have some wonderful golf courses featured in this issue, I’m encouraging everyone to play where you haven’t played before, check out the pro shops, buy a shirt, visit with the staff, sit down and eat in their restaurants.

Be sure to check out our back cover featuring the PGA Superstore – Wow! Have you been in their stores? They have everything from the latest greatest equipment, a full service club repair shop and endless racks of wild golf apparel and shoes.

The holidays are upon us, my hope is that we all take a few moments to explore, smile, make a new friend, but above all enjoy! Until next time, I’ve got to run…

Cheers, Lisa Kunkle-Meyers

McDowell Mountain Golf Club in Scottsdale re-opened with a bang,

when PGA Tour great and former Arizona State Sun Devil, Phil Mickelson struck the fi rst tee shot and took part in the ribbon cutting ceremony with Scotts-dale Mayor Jim Lane in October. Mickelson, Honorable Mayor Lane, Steve “Coach” Loy and course architect Randy Heckenkemper were on hand to unveil the newly enhanced McDowell Mountain Golf Club which was formerly Sanctuary Golf Club.

In the spring of 2011, Phil Mickelson and “Coach” Steve Loy acquired the operating rights to McDowell Mountain Golf Club, and have undertaken signifi cant golf course enhancements and

renovations designed to make the course more challenging for the better players, while at the same time making the course more forgiving, enjoyable and fun for beginning golfers, families and players of all calibers.

Course revisions were overseen by golf course architect Randy Heckenkem-per and included widening of the playing corridors, the reshaping of a number of fairways, several new teeing areas, additional strategic waste bunkers, and more! More than 20,000 cubic yards of reshaping was done throughout the course to improve playability, widen the playing corridors, and to create a more enjoyable overall experience.

Other specifi c enhancements in-cluded over 460 yards were added to the “Back Tees,” the nines were fl ipped to cre-ate a more dramatic fi nish to the round, a number of bunkers were fi lled-in to create a more playable experience for the aver-age golfer and new signage and decora-tive features were added throughout the property including new tee markers, new hole monuments, several bronze animal sculptures, and the addition of an elegant new McDowell Mountain Rolex Clock!

“We really wanted to make the golf course that was family friendly and fun to play,” stated Phil Mickelson. “By strategically adding grass in and cleaning up the desert areas, making the corridors much bigger, we feel like we made it a much more enjoyable experience. We now feel like this is a fun experience for everyone,” added Mickelson

McDowell Mountain will also be an even better place to learn the game or improve your swing. World-class instruc-tion will be offered with the Rick Smith Golf Academy and the practice facility was expanded signifi cantly with new practice putting and chipping greens, a

larger teeing ground and distinctive target features in the landing area.

Frequent players need to check out McDowell Mountain’s new Player’s Club, which also offers preferred rates and benefi ts that are second to none. In late 2010, the Amateur Association of Arizona Golfers (AAAG) was developed to protect and grow the game of golf in Arizona. The AAAG services its members on a local level in the area of handicapping and playing opportunities. The association will expand its programs in many areas to fully service amateur golfers in the months and years to come.

AAAG provides the following services:• Handicap Index - All AAAG Members will

carry an index with computation services provided by Handicomp.

• All scores will update on the 1st and 15th of each month. Members will also receive a Low Index and Trend Handicap.

• Posting - Members will be able to post scores at participating golf courses or via the “Post A Score” tab on the top left of the home page.

• AAAG Tournaments - The 2011 Tourna-ment Schedule will consist of at least seven

events that include opportunities for those of any skill level and a variety of price points.

“The benefi ts of maintaining a handicap include being able to compete on any course from any set if tees on an equitable basis. It also gives golfers a way to measure skill im-provement and is most likely required to play in amateur events,” said Joel Schafer, AAAG’s Executive Director. “If you love to play golf, I would encourage you to maintain a handicap and take your game to the next level.” The AAAG will continue to seek input from its participating golf courses and clubs in order to develop programs that will benefi t the clubs and membership. The AAAG is committed to establishing programs that are affordable and valuable to both members and participating golf courses. For more informa-tion, please contact the AAAG at 480-443-9009 or visit www.azgolfnetwork.org.

Arizona golf has a decorated history that includes many recognizable names. Nicklaus and Palmer frequently competed in the “Phoenix Open” (now the Waste Management Phoenix Open). Mickelson, Mayfair, Casey, Park and many others made waves on the collegiate front while playing at Arizona State University. One such fi gure that may not have the “name” recognition of the likes of Mickelson, Nicklaus and Palmer left an indelible stamp on Arizona Golf: Johnny Bulla. A member of the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame, Bulla won an astounding 14 Arizona Opens. His record on tour included run-ner-up fi nishes in the Masters, U.S. Open, and twice in the British Open. He won the 1941 L.A. Open and was a traveling companion of the great Sam Snead. He

was the fi rst professional to fl y his own plan (he founded Arizona Airways, which today is Frontier Airlines) and he could play golf left handed as well as he played right handed. Bulla passed away on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 2003 but his legacy lives on as he designed a handful of historic Arizona golf courses.

One such course is Ahwatukee Coun-try Club. Bulla designed “the country club” in 1972 in a way that offers a blend of traditional golf with mature tree lined fairways, parkland style features, while serving up views of the South Mountain foothills that are dotted with saguaros and desert scape. The 6,713 yard, par 72 layout offers gently angled fairways lined with 40 year-old mature trees. There are carefully sculpted mounding and

strategically placed bunkers throughout the layout. Yet most green complexes are open in front inviting lower running shots selections for a varied approach. In addition, a third of the golf holes on the course have water hazards that come into play to test your mettle and keep you coming back for more. A popular tract for area residents and visitors alike, the club’s popularity is enhanced due in part to it’s convenient location that is just minutes from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and within close proximity to east val-ley cities of Tempe and Chandler.

Frequent players at Ahwatukee Country Club should inquire about the fl exible membership options as well as the Ahwatukee’s popular frequent player program – The Ahwatukee Gold Card. Gold Card-holders receive a host of benefi ts including the club’s lowest rates and also preferred golf rates not only at Ahwatukee Country Club but also at the other Ahwatukee Golf Properties in the area, includ-ing Club West Golf Club, Ahwatu-kee Lakes and The Duke Golf Club. This line up of courses creates a truly great golf value for golfers looking to play a selection of fun area courses.

Speaking of value Ahwatukee Country Club offers a fun brand of Arizona Golf that won’t leave a deep dent in your golf wallet. Golf-ers can book tee times on www.ah-watukeegolf.com for great on-line specials throughout the year. The club has also become a popular venue for special gatherings, Mon-day Night Football viewing parties, friday fi sh fry’s, banquets, weddings and special events. So what are you

waiting for? Take a stroll down Arizona Golf’s proverbial memory lane and tee it up at Ahwatukee Country Club. And while you do, take some advice from the course designer, the late Mr. Bulla who was quoted as saying, “think about the next shot, not the last.” For more infor-mation on Ahwatukee Country Club, call (480) 893-1161 or book tee times on-line at www.ahwatukeegolf.com.

We can all agree that in this great game, perfection is simply unattainable. There are a million and one variables involved in this sport. However, the pur-

suit of perfection in your practice habits may very well make you more consistent, and consistency is the second most frequent request we hear from my students (right behind “I want to hit it farther!”). In 1998 Jack Nicklaus said “You don’t have to hit the ball long and perfect. You have to hit the ball long enough and in play.” So, let’s look at some ways to help make your practice time more benefi cial so your ball is consistently long enough and on the short grass. Below are a few very important tips to help you maximize your return on investment. Set up a “Practice Station”. Your goal in full swing prac-tice is to put an accurate label on why your ball is not going where you want it to, and in order to do that, you need to eliminate as many variables as possible. If you see a consistent pattern of shots landing to the right (or left) of your intended target, you need to rule out the possibility that you are actu-ally aimed to the right (or left) of the target. Before you hit a single shot, take three longer irons (or the bright yellow or orange “aiming sticks” that you now see poking out of nearly every golf bag on the Tour) and lay them down in the manner pictured in the photo. Begin your ball striking session with correct alignment from your very fi rst shot and you will begin to ingrain a higher level of target awareness. Work on your Swing Path/Swing Plane. Cut the head off of a club you no longer need (or get a piece of dowel from Home Depot), stick it in the ground and slide a “pool noodle” down the shaft. If your tendency is to suck the club inside or below plane on the backswing, place the foam obstacle just in-side the target line and practice taking the club back and over the noodle. If you tend to come down “over the top” or above plane, place the shaft just outside the target line and practice coming into the ball from beneath the noodle. The more repetitions you make in a structured practice environment, the sooner thesequence of movements become usable, and more importantly, repeatable on the golf course.

Are you looking for a golf experience unlike any other? Does the unusual, yet beautiful, excite you? If you answered yes to either of these questions,

then you are ready for Quarry Pines Golf Club. The Pines represents an evolution in golf course design and the enjoyment of the game. Ten years ago, following a decision to abandon the sand and gravel quarry adjacent to the original golf course, the Town of Marana and the quarry/golf course owner agreed on a plan that would reclaim the quarry. By strategically relocating ten golf holes into the old quarry and reconfi guring eight of the existing holes, one of Tucson’s most popular golf courses was transformed into an even better product. Today the unique desert landscape is highlighted bydramatic elevation changes and the addition of thousandsof trees. We invite you to come play Quarry Pines – Arizona’s only quarry golf course!

The Divine 9 is a consortium of Carson City and Carson Valley’s Nevada’s top courses. This impressive collection includes Carson Valley, Dayton Valley, Eagle Valley East and West, Empire Ranch, Genoa Lakes Golf Club: The Lakes & The Resort, Silver Oak and Sunridge.

In total, the courses offer 171 holes of golf across 70,000+ yards of the most scenic terrain in the region. Unique topography combined with a temperate climate, convenient accessibility and a favorable elevation have attracted some of golf’s leading course designers including Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller, John Harbottle and Peter Jacobsen.

Carson Valley winds through century-old cottonwoods and along the Carson River for a relaxing, yet challenging 6,023 yards.

At Dayton Valley Golf Club, Arnold Palmer blended the natural beauty of high desert terrain with the challenges of links-style fairways. The large, undulating greens and plush fairways have welcomed Stage One PGA Tour Qualifying since 1995.

Eagle Valley East invites golfers to tee it high and let it fl y across its challenging 6,658 yards, numerous water hazards and large greens.

Eagle Valley West is a links-style course that demands accuracy with an emphasis on target golf.

Empire Ranch Golf Course has three nine-hole courses, each with water and wetlands. It’s fairly open but rarely forgiving with fi ve sets of tees catering to every level of golfer.

The Lakes Course at Genoa Lakes is a John Harbottle and Peter Jacobsen design. It was 4th Best New Public Course in North America by “Golf Digest” in 1994, and 3rd Best Course in the Nevada in 1995.

Genoa Lakes Resort Course is a Johnny Miller/John Harbottle design and features a variety of elevation changes, visually tight fairways and numerous water hazards.

Silver Oak Golf Course features impres-sive views of downtown Carson City. A wide open appearance can be deceiving as it winds through natural terrain, demand-ing accurate play over changing elevations.

Sunridge Golf Course features tight fair-ways, challenging side-hill and downhill lies, serious elevation changes and large greens – many of the mounded variety.

“Seven Canyons is irreplaceable real estate,” course designer and golf legend Tom Weiskopf said. “You can’t fi nd that kind of stuff anywhere.”

If you journey north to Sedona and play The Club at Seven Canyons, you’ll un-doubtedly have your own, similar reaction.

The Club at Seven Canyons is a Par-70, 6,746-yard golf course situated on the out-skirts of Sedona. Since its opening in 2003, The Club at Seven Canyons has received glowing reviews from the nation’s golf publi-cations and leading course critics.

America’s 50 Greatest Golf Retreats” by Golf Digest Index; “One of the Best Residential Golf Courses” and “One of the Top 100 Modern Courses” by Golfweek Magazine.

Golfweek’s architecture editor Bradley S. Klein, wrote the classic line, “Seven Canyons is the “IMAX” of golf.”

The Club at Seven Canyons was built as a private golf club and a strong member-ship base still exists. However, like many private venues across the country, The Club at Seven Canyons recently opened its doors to the public.

Located on approximately 200 acres surrounded by stunning red rocks and 100,000 acres of protected national forest land, The Club at Seven Canyons puts a premium on exceptional shot-making with small greens, narrow landing areas, classic-style bunkering, mature trees, natural water features and constant changes in elevation.

“You don’t have to use a driver to comfortably enjoy and play the course, as with any course that’s designed properly.

The game of golf is distance and direction and it’s controlling those two aspects,” said Weiskopf.

The fourth hole, a 194 yard Par 3, concisely represents the experience that is The Club at Seven Canyons. Starting with the magnifi cent view from the tee box, you’ll then come across an 80-foot drop to a green which is protected by ironically, seven bunkers. With the constant wind, club selection is important and makes the hole interesting each and every time.

In additional to select daily fee play, The Club at Seven Canyons also features 395 golf club memberships, lavishly-appointed fractional and whole ownership Villas and 32 private estate home sites.

For a Stay and Play getaway, the golf course also offers packages with the numerous Sedona lodging establishments including Enchantment Resort.

With 51 golf courses within Scottsdale’s city limits, and an additional 156 courses

sprinkled across its Valley of the Sun neighbors, Scottsdale bills itself as the World’s Finest Golf Destination. It’s a diffi cult argument to refute. More than 330 days of sunshine and less than eight inches of annual rainfall means Scottsdale-area courses host more than 12 million rounds every year. A year-round median average temperature of 70 degrees and well-below-par humidity fi lls out Scottsdale’s scorecard nicely. Speaking of scorecards, Scottsdale is home to 13 of the Top 25 golf courses in

Arizona, according to Golf Magazine’s 2010 rankings, six of the 75 Best Golf Resorts as determined by Golf Digest, and six courses listed on Golf Magazine’s 2010 Top 100 You Can Play. And for those who’d rather watch the pros play, Scottsdale hosts the PGA TOUR’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, the best attend-ed golf tournament in the world, welcoming about 500,000 specta-tors a year.

An internationally renowned landmark that helped put desert golf on the map when it fi rst opened in 1990, Troon North Golf Club now plays better than ever thanks to a reconfi guration and renovation. Overseen by

Tom Weiskopf, original designer of Troon North’s Pinnacle Course and co-designer of its Monument Course, both tracks were blended and re-sequenced in 2007 to create new layouts with improved playability.

Undoubtedly Scottsdale’s most recog-nizable club, TPC Scottsdale is a 36-hole jewel best known as the host of the aforementioned Waste ManagementPhoenix Open. Here you can attempt to replicate Tiger’s hole-in-one on the Sta-dium Course’s famed 16th hole, or try to carry the water right onto the 15th hole’s island green. In-the-know locals, however, rave about TPC Scottsdale’s lesser known

but equally scenic Champions Course, which meanders across natural ravines and rolling terrain.

Grayhawk Golf Club, a favorite of 2010 Masters champ Phil Mickelson (for whom the club’s grillroom is named) has developed a reputation as one of Scotts-dale’s most stylish. Grayhawk’s Talon and Raptor courses are superstars in their own right, highlighted by Talon’s scenic back nine and Raptor’s tournament history. In fact, Grayhawk hosted a variety of top-fl ight competitive events, including the Andersen Consulting World Champion-ship of Golf, Williams World Challenge hosted by Tiger Woods, Tommy Bahama Challenge and, of course, the Frys.com Open, a PGA TOUR event held on the Raptor Course 2007-2009.

Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation bordering Scottsdale,We-Ko-Pa Golf Club offers a desert golf experience like no other. Golfers are completely immersed in the Sonoran Desert with no dwellings, roads or even out-of-bounds markers to distract them from the panoramic surroundings. Sports Illustrated named the Cholla Course among the Top 10 New Golf Courses in the World when it opened in 2001, and it’s since become a fi xture on Golf Magazine’s list of the Top 100 You Can Play.

Although desert golf is the typical golf experience in Scottsdale, the city features several outstanding courses that provide a traditional look and feel. McCormick Ranch Golf Club offers 36 holes that unfold around sprawling water hazards and along fairways of mature pine, eucalyptus and palm trees that compliment the wide open spaces of the Scottsdale’s desert tracks to the north. At Camelback Golf Club, golfers play through lush, tree-lined fairways, gently sloping contours and sparkling water

water hazards with magnifi cent mountain backdrops. The Indian Bend Course is a traditional American links-style course, and the Padre Course was designed by renowned course architect Arthur Hills. Both McCormick Ranch and Camelback opened decades ago and have since undergone the occasional renovation to maintain high standards of conditions and integrity of the original designs.

Enjoy world-class resort golf atThe Boulders Resort, where the top-fl ight North and South courses wind around and over the prop-erty’s namesake rock formations. Golf Magazine deemed the resort a Gold Medal award-winner in 2010, while Golf Digest ranked the resort No. 40 in its 2009 list of the 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America.

The Westin Ki-erland Resort & Spa offers three pictur-esque, nine-hole lay-outs, allowing golfers to mix and match to create a variety of playing experiences. Kierland Golf Club was one of fi rst in the world to feature the G2 climate-control device that changes the air temperature in and around golf carts by more than 40 degrees, keeping golfers warm in the winter and refreshed all summer long. The

Westin Kierland also pays homage to the Scottish immigrants who helped develop Arizona’s railroads, mines and towns by offering the Scottish Golf Experience, where golfers don rented kilts and sample Johnnie Walker beverages while perfect-ing their swing on the course.

So, while labeling yourself the World’s Finest Golf Destination may sound at least a little bit cocky, in the immortal words of Muhammad Ali, “It ain’t bragging if you can back it up.” When it comes to golf in Scottsdale, it ain’t bragging.
