Hotel Indonesia KempinskiJl. MH Thamrin, no. 1. 021 2358 3800

In 1962 Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, declared Hotel Indonesia open, making it the first five-star hotel in Southeast Asia. In 2004, the hotel closed for renovations and it finally reopened in November 2008 under the management of the Kempinski group. Though the exterior didn’t change much, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski has completely recreated the interior space, now featuring 289 spacious rooms and suites. They’ve also got 10 restaurants and bars on site, including the newly opened Paulaner German restaurant, which features an onsite brewery. We were amazed with their glamorous Presidential Suite, which offers 412 sqm of luxury, as well as a private spa and butler service.

But even if you’re not staying at their signature Presidental Suite, you are welcome to pamper yourself at their spa, located on the 17th floor, the top floor of the hotel. It features a balance of sophisticated and rejuvenating treatments, outstanding service

Kridaya is short for Kerajinan Indonesia dalam Warisan Budaya (Indonesian Art in Cultural Heritage). Formerly known as Gelar Batik Nusantara, it’s an annual art and culture exhibition organised by PT Mediatama Binakreasi. This exhibition fea-tures fine artwork from a variety of Indonesian artists. This goal of Kridaya is to help develop the art and cultural product industries in Indonesia. This high-scale exhibi-tion is aimed at raising the aware-ness of younger Indonesians about the beauty of their own cultural heritage.

The stars of this mega exhibition are definitely the batik products. Each and every form of batik from around the archipelago will be present here, in celebration of UNESCO’s declaration of batik as one of Indonesia’s unique contributions to art and cultural heritage. Long before

PreviewKridaya 2010

that happened, batik had won the hearts of older generations and nowadays it has grown even more popular. Even the president, SBY, declared every Friday as ‘Batik Day’.

Other forms of art featured at this exhibition will include keris knives and wayang puppets from various regions of Indonesia. Product auctions will be one of the main events at this exhibition. Live music of different genres such as blues and keroncong will entertain the crowds, along with award shows, batik demonstrations, fashion shows, and talk shows (with experts). Siti Anissa

Pacific Place MallSat 14-September 5

Pacific Place Mall will be holding Ramadhan Festivities throughout the holy month, and one of them will be these special Sufi dance performances, every Saturday and Sunday from August 14 to September 5. Sufi dancers will perform in the ground-floor atrium of the mall. Sufi dance, sometimes referred to as Sufi whirling or spin-ning, is a physically active form of meditation still practiced by the Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order from Persia. It is a traditional dance performed during worship ceremonies.

While it may seem easy to the audience, Sufi whirling requires great skill, since the dancers must spin while revolving from right to left around an epicentre. According to the symbolism of this ritual, the camel hair hat they wear, also known as a sikke, represents the tombstone of the ego while the white skirt represents the ego’s shroud. While whirling, dancers reach out their arms, and their right arm will be directed to the sky, symbolically accepting God’s

beneficence, while their left arm is turned down facing the earth.

Other events that will be held in Pacific Place during Ramadhan include a branded sale, bazaar, music performances every day during the fasting break and their Mall Art exhibition. They also have consumer promos, such as lucky draws and Ramadhan instant prizes for every minimum purchase of Rp. 500,000. The first 20 redeemers each day will also receive additional chocolates. There will also be a chance to win an Umroh trip for two with their Weekend Special promo. SA
