Art Activity In Action: “Printmaking With Plasticine”
The following art activity is inspired by the “simple lesson plan ideas”
on the website, with example artwork included

Get Inspired:

1) Read “A Remainder Of One,” by Elinor J. Pinczes and illustrated by Bonnie Mackain2) Find your favourite artwork from the book and use the “Art ExploraIon Star” to discuss what makes the printmaking artwork in the book different from other forms of art ) e.g. thick lines, interesIng textures created, repeated shapes, etc.3) From the definiIon on the previous page, introduce the three steps to printmaking: cut shapes into an object, apply ink to the raised surfaces, press the image onto the paper.4) Look at some examples of printmaking using plasIcine, such as found at: hSp://www.filthwizardry.com/2010/09/plasIcine-‐stamp-‐prinIng.html5) The following pages walk you through the process, with examples of each step:

Pick Your Favourite Drawing• Pick one part of the drawing to recreate it.• I have picked the first drawing in the book, and will try a mushroom and a some grass:

FlaSen one side of your plasIcine out, and press your shape into the flat side, using a pen or sIck. You can also roll out plasIcine snakes to create your raised image. Remember that in printmaking, only the raised parts are printed:

Apply a LITTLE bit of paint to the raised surfaces, or use a stamp pad:

Press the image onto the paper. Do this more than once and make some paSerns:

Create some more prints. These will be used for our sun paSern:

When the paint dries, you can color
the rest of your drawing:

If students have trouble with printmaking, have them start with simple shapes to create paSerns.We are inspired by the flower printmaking on page 4 of “Summer” by Steven Schnur, illustrated by
Leslie Evans:
