STUDY LEADER

DEBORAH VISCHAK is an Assistant Professor of Ancient

Egyptian Art History and Archaeology at Princeton

University. She has taught courses on ancient Egyptian

visual and material culture, archaeological practice and

theory, and the history of Egyptology. Her scholarship

engages questions of social identity, landscapes and

monumentality, and the role of style within broader networks of com-

munication. She first visited Egypt more than 20 years ago, and since

then has traveled throughout the country to excavate, conduct field

research, and drink hundreds of cups of tea.

Professor Vischak’s first book, Community and Identity in Ancient Egypt (Cambridge University Press, 2015), examined the Old

Kingdom tombs at Qubbet el-Hawa in modern Aswan. This book

argues that the unusual form of these tombs represents a care-

fully and intentionally crafted expression of local community

identity, shared among the residents of this ancient border

town. She is currently at work on a book for Reaktion Press’

Essays in Art and Culture series, examining the social

aspects of elite mortuary culture across the Pharaonic

period.

EGYPTOLOGISTS

TAREK SWELIM, a native Egyptian, is an expert

on the art, architecture, and history of the Middle

East. Educated at the American University in

Cairo and Harvard, he is currently on the faculty

of Hamid Bin Khalifa University in Doha, Qatar.

FETICHE POSMA-ZAALOUK is also a native

Egyptian and noted Egyptologist.

Educated at Helwan University in Cairo,

she specializes in the culture, history,

and architecture of ancient Egypt, as

well as issues relating to women and

village life.

(COVER) Marvel at the enduring symbol of ancient Egypt, the pyramids at Giza.

Board a traditional Egyptian sailing boat, called a felucca (BELOW), to sail

among the islands of the Nile near Aswan. (BACK COVER) Unlike other temples in

Thebes, Luxor Temple is not dedicated to a cult god or a deified version of the king in death, but to the rejuvenation of kingship.

Dear Princetonian,Follow the course of the Nile River, whose mighty waters have long been the source of life-giving

sustenance, cultural riches, and mythic power, into the very heart of ancient civilizations. Aboard the

deluxe, privately chartered 18-cabin yacht, the Sun Boat III, explore the glorious age of the pharaohs

on a 13-day journey through Egypt’s rich heritage. Among the many highlights of this itinerary are the

Great Pyramid of Giza, the only remaining wonder of the ancient world; the spectacular funerary boat

of Cheops at the Solar Boat Museum; the stunning tombs of the Valley of the Kings; the monumental

unfinished obelisk in Aswan; and the colossal statues of Ramesses II and his favorite queen, Nefertari,

at the temples of Abu Simbel. A special treat will be a visit to the newly opened Grand Egyptian

Museum at Giza, described as the largest archaeological museum in the world.

Experience the old-world elegance and modern amenities of the Sun Boat III, cruising from Luxor to

Aswan, and enjoy the sites of millennia-old pyramids, monuments, and fine arts. Learn about the

unparalleled architectural and engineering skills of master pyramid builders and enjoy unique behind-

the-scenes access to archaeological sites. Before and after the cruise, explore Old Cairo’s Islamic

monuments, Coptic Cairo, and the Khan al-Khalili souks. This “bucket-list” destination is sure to fill

quickly, so we encourage you to reserve your space today by contacting the Princeton Journeys team

at (609) 258-8686 or [email protected].

HOME CAIRO, EGYPTThursday–Friday, January 10–11, 2019

Depart home on overnight flights to Cairo. On arrival, transfer to the historic Mena House Hotel. From its early days as a royal hunting lodge and later trans-formation to a deluxe hotel, Mena House has hosted dignitaries and world leaders visiting the Egyptian capital. Enjoy its lovely gardens and the incomparable views of the great pyramid of the Pharaoh Khufu. Spend the afternoon at leisure. On the evening of January 11, gather for a welcome orientation meeting and reception. Afterward, stroll the grounds and admire the pyramids lit in the evening shadows. MENA HOUSE HOTEL (R)

CAIROSaturday, January 12

Marvel at the last standing monument of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Great Pyramid on the Giza Plateau. Then, enjoy specially arranged access to the “paws” of the 4,500-year-old half-man, half-lion known as the Great Sphinx. Before returning to the hotel, visit the restored funerary boat of Cheops— a 4th-dynasty Pharaoh who, according to tradition, left this world for the next transported aboard his solar barque. After lunch visit the newly opened Grand Egyptian Museum. Described

as the largest archaeological museum in the world, it houses artifacts of ancient Egypt and aspires to be a global leader in scientific, historical, and archaeological study. This evening gather for a welcome dinner with local Egyptians at a private home. MENA HOUSE HOTEL (B,L,D)

CAIROSunday, January 13Journey to the unique Djoser step pyramid at Saqqara, a precursor to the grand Giza pyramids. Explore the underground galleries where floor-to-ceiling hieroglyphs depict daily life during Egypt’s 3rd dynasty (c. 2670–2613 B.C.E.). After lunch visit the royal necropolis of Dashur to see the bent pyramid, which archaeologists now believe represents a transitional form between step-sided and smooth-sided pyramids. This evening is free for independent pursuits. MENA HOUSE HOTEL (B,L)

CAIRO LUXOR (EMBARK)Monday, January 14

of the ancients. Embark the Sun Boat III for lunch and an afternoon at leisure on board. This evening visit the Luxor Temple, brilliantly lit against the darken-ing Egyptian sky. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

DENDERATuesday, January 15

Leisurely cruising this morning allows for a glimpse of daily life in villages along the Nile riverbanks. Arrive in Qena for a visit to the temple complex of Dendera, dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love, music, wine, and procreation. Cruise back to Luxor. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

VALLEY OF THE KINGSWednesday, January 16

Early risers can soar above the Egyptian landscape on an optional hot-air balloon ride. Then cross the Nile to Thebes, ancient capital of Egypt. Enjoy special access to the evoca tive tombs in the Valley of the Kings, hidden for thousands of years, and the Valley of the Queens. Visit the grandiose mortuary temple dedicated to Hatshepsut, Egypt’s iconic female pharaoh. The temple took 15 years to construct and consists of three colon naded terraces in front of an imposing backdrop of cliffs. Continue to the Colossi of Memnon, two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III that have stood in the Theban necropolis since 1350 B.C.E. In the late afternoon, visit the Luxor Museum, on the corniche overlooking the west bank of the Nile. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

VALLEY OF THE NOBLESThursday, January 17

Early this morning visit the unique tombs of two ancient nobles: Rekhmire and Sennufer. Rekhmire served as vizier during the reigns of Thutmosis III and

Amenhotep II; his lavishly decorated tomb contains well-preserved scenes of daily life during the New Kingdom period, as well as a complete text of the duties of a vizier. Sennufer was the mayor of Thebes and overseer of the gardens of Amun during the reign of Amenophis III; his tomb, beautifully decorated, is sometimes referred to as the Tomb of the Vineyards. Then marvel at the size, architecture, and artwork of the mortuary temple of Ramesses III at Medinet Habu, an important New Kingdom structure acclaimed for its inscribed reliefs depicting the rise and fall of the Sea Peoples. This evening enjoy a festive Egyptian galabeyya (traditional Egyptian garment) party featuring lively music and dancing aboard ship. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

KOM OMBO ASWANFriday, January 18

Cruise to Kom Ombo to explore its unusual double temple, half of which is dedicated to the crocodile god, Sobek, the other half to the falcon god, Horus. Continue cruising to Aswan, with time to relax and enjoy the ship’s amenities. Upon arrival visit the island of Agilika, where the Temple of Isis, once on Philae Island, was relocated when the Russian-led Aswan Dam project got underway in the 1960s. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the island has numerous ruins in cluding the Kiosk of Trajan. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

ASWANSaturday, January 19

Disembark for an early-morning specially arranged visit to Qubbet el-Hawa cemetery to view massive tombs that date as far back 2500 B.C.E. Then take a short flight to see the astounding

monuments at Abu Simbel, located in former Nubian lands. At the twin temples built by Pharaoh Ramesses II, huge statues depict him and his favorite wife, Nefertari. During construction of the Aswan High Dam, the temples were threatened with submersion under the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Between 1964 and 1966, a project sponsored by UNESCO and the Egyptian government dismantled both temples and recon-structed them 65 meters higher than the original site. Return to Aswan to view the “unfinished obelisk”—the largest known ancient obelisk—at a nearby quarry. Weather permitting, board a tradi tional felucca sailboat and sail past Nile River islands Kitchener and Elephantine. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

EDFUSunday, January 20

Enjoy the educational program en route to Edfu. Upon arrival, visit the best- preserved ancient temple in Egypt, dedicated to Horus, the ubiquitous falcon-headed god of the Egyptians. The main building includes a great Hypostyle Hall and, just outside, an entrance colonnade that remarkably still has visible, original, colored reliefs. This evening enjoy a festive farewell dinner on board. SUN BOAT III (B,L,D)

LUXOR (DISEMBARK) CAIROMonday, January 21

SUN BOAT III was built in 1992 and extensively refurbished to reflect the graceful style of the 1920s and 1930s. Of the more than 200 cruisers now sailing the Nile, none surpasses this elegant vessel in comfort, service, or cuisine. Its limited capacity and old-world elegance evoke the feeling of sailing the Nile on a private yacht. Secure, well-located, private docking facilities in Luxor and Aswan ensure that Sun Boat III is always convenient and easy to board. All cabins face outside with two picture windows and are equipped with full en suite bathrooms with shower and hair dryer, individually controlled air-conditioning, satellite television, internal telephone and external telephone with international line access, safe deposit box, individual CD player, and mini-bar. Sun Boat III has large, inviting lounges rimmed with windows for comfortable observation of the passing scenery. On the vessel’s spacious sun deck, comfort-able lounge chairs surround a plunge pool, perfect for a refreshing dip under brilliant Egyptian skies. Other amenities include a gift shop, restaurant,

laundry service, and Internet access (intermittent).
