SYNOPSIS

Based on E.T.A. Hoffman’s book, this is the story of a magical Christmas journey.

PROLOGUE:Drosselmeyer’s Workshop

Drosselmeyer is a toymaker. It’s Christmas Eve in his workshop. Drosselmeyer and his nephew, Karl, finish preparing a very special nutcracker doll as a gift for Clara Tannenbaum.

ACT ONEThe Tannenbaum Family Drawing Room

Drosselmeyer and Karl are guests of honor at the Tannenbaum family’s Christmas celebration. The Tannenbaum children – Clara, Fritz, and the eldest daughter Marie – anxiously await their arrival.

The Tannenbaum children are delighted when their grandparents appear with gifts for each of them. Drosselmeyer and Karl finally arrive, and the gift-giving begins. Drosselmeyer charms the children with his magic tricks, producing a frolicking jack doll and shepherdess doll to entertain the guests.

Dinner is served, and everyone except Marie, Karl, Drosselmeyer, and Clara exit toward the dining room. Drosselmeyer gives Clara her special present – the magic nutcracker doll. Fritz returns to steal the doll, and, as Clara tries to rescue it, it is broken. Drosselmeyer repairs the nutcracker as family and friends return from the dining room to make a toast to peace and prosperity. The guests depart, and the Tannenbaum family retires for the evening.

The Transformation

The drawing room is dark and still as Clara enters to retrieve her nutcracker doll. Marie follows her younger sister to escort her back to her bedroom. A tall, dark figure enters the room and moves menacingly towards them. Marie challenges the figure only to find it is Fritz trying to scare them.

The drawing room clock chimes midnight, and smoke pours out of the fireplace. Suddenly, a mouse runs out of the fireplace and starts to chase them around the room. Soon the room is filled with mice and rats. Drosselmeyer appears to banish them as the children run to him for protection. He sprinkles magic dust over them – and the magical journey begins.

The Christmas tree grows rapidly, the furniture moves, and the room transforms. The Mouse King appears with his army of mice and tries to take Clara’s nutcracker doll, which magically transforms into a real person. Toy soldiers, led by the life-sized Nutcracker, try to protect the children. The Mouse King suddenly overpowers the Nutcracker, but Fritz seizes the opportunity to strike the Mouse King over the head with his sword, knocking him unconscious.

Marie is distressed to see the Nutcracker doll broken and defeated, but Drosselmeyer brings him back to life, transforming him into his nephew, Karl. Drosselmeyer introduces the children to the Snow Queen. She leads them to the Land of Snow and to the steam train that will carry them to the Land of Toys and Sweets.

ACT TWOThe Land of Toys and Sweets

The flying train travels over clouds of angels to the Land of Toys and Sweets. Drosselmeyer follows on the back of a bumble bee. Carousel animals transport characters from around the world.

Clara, Fritz, Marie and Karl arrive in the magical Land of Toys and Sweets. Drosselmeyer introduces them to his creations.

Darkness looms in this magical wonderland as the Mouse King and his army of mice attempt to spoil the fun. Karl takes Fritz’s sword and defeats the Mouse King and his cohorts for good.

The children celebrate their victory and are treated to entertainment featuring Drosselmeyer’s creations. Fritz and Clara take delight in the sight of the Spanish and Arabian couples. Clara dances with the Chinese Dragon and the shepherdess doll with her geese. Fritz frolics with the jack dolls, and both he and Clara join Mother Ginger and her many Russian children, as well as the dancing flowers. But the real surprise is seeing the evening culminate in a romantic dance between two people they know and love – chivalrous Karl and lovely Marie.

Drosselmeyer whisks the children magically back to their drawing room, where they will awaken the next morning, wondering if this was simply a dream or a magical treat that they will not soon forget.

Michael Pink is the longest serving artistic director in Milwaukee Ballet history. Since joining the Company in December of 2002, he has established himself as a prominent member of the Milwaukee arts community, demonstrating his commitment to the future of dance through new work, education and collaboration. His artistic vision for Milwaukee Ballet continues to be exciting and challenging. He has worked as répétiteur for Rudolf Nureyev at the Paris Opera and La Scala Milan. His first professional work, 1914, was nominated for a West End Theatre Award.

A long-standing friendship with composer Philip Feeney has produced over 20 original works, including Strange Meeting, Solstice, Don’t Touch, Aubade, as well as works for theatre and television.

He continues to build a strong working relationship with Milwaukee Repertory Theater, where his credits include A Christmas Carol, Assassins, Cabaret and Next to Normal.  He looks forward to future collaborations with more Milwaukee arts groups.

BALLET DEVELOPMENT

Marco Antonio Melendez, Artistic Director

Milwaukee Children’s Choir is Southeastern Wisconsin’s premier youth choir. Since 1994, Milwaukee Children’s Choir has been delighting audiences and providing children, ages 5-18, with exceptional choral music education and performance experiences that foster creativity, personal expression and social growth.

As an audition-based, advanced children’s choral music program, Milwaukee Children’s Choir maintains six levels of choral education for children from 1st-12th grades. The Choir offers rehearsal locations throughout the whole of Southeastern Wisconsin. Milwaukee Children’s Choir also serves children during the school day at five Milwaukee Public Schools, providing music education through its grant-funded Harmony Program and throughout partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools and other Milwaukee area schools.

Now celebrating its 24th season, Milwaukee Children’s Choir maintains a collaborative relationship with area arts organizations while also supporting area music educators through clinics and workshops. The Choir developed and annually hosts the Milwaukee Choral Conference, an intensive choral workshop for choral conductors as well as current and aspiring choral music educators, created to explore solutions for promoting and preserving the choral arts today and for future generations. Conference clinicians have included Dr. Anton Armstrong, Henry Leck, Dr. Rollo Dilworth, Dr. Doreen Rao and Jim Papoulis. Other frequent collaborations include those with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and the Milwaukee Ballet such as its annual production of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s, “The Nutcracker.” Recently, Voices of Eterna, Milwaukee Children’s Choir’s premier choral ensemble, was featured at the Wisconsin Choral Director’s Association State Conference in Appleton, Wisconsin. Last season, the Choir hosted a collaborative concert with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s, THE FOUR TOPS.

Milwaukee Children’s Choir utilizes Voice for Life, an internationally recognized, advanced music education curriculum. From vocal development and musical literacy to leadership skills, the curriculum builds upon each chorister’s artistic excellence and character. The Choir also offers regional, national, and international touring opportunities for students. Recently, the Choir toured throughout the West and East Coasts of the United States, culminating in a performance at New York City’s Carnegie Hall. Last season, the choir travelled throughout Wisconsin, Tennessee, and the Bahamas.

Milwaukee Children’s Choir is a proud member of the United Performing Arts Fund.
