The Arts & Media department at RNC is based in the Chapel

arts centre and learning is integrated with community arts

events. Courses are offered from Level 1 to Level 3 across

a range of subject areas including performing arts, audio

media production and art and design.

The facilities include an art studio, recording studios, a

radio station, two performance venues and teaching rooms

equipped with Apple computers. These spaces are used

for teaching, project work, performances and public arts

events. Getting involved in these events provides work

based learning across all courses and is great preparation

for employment.

The teaching team all have industry experience and are

actively involved in music performance, dance, ceramics,

music composition, acting and media production. This

ensures that learning is based on the real requirements of

the industry and the support and advice that they offer is

accurate and up to date.

The Chapel is also home to the creative community, made

up of arts professionals who work with us on a regular basis

and provide work placement opportunities for students.

Community Arts

Our community arts courses are for people who are interested in working in an arts

environment, but not necessarily in a performing role. You can explore a range of art forms

through creative projects and get some real experience of working in an arts centre.

They cover a wide range of art forms including music, dance, radio, art, media, ceramics,

music production and drama and are designed to lead directly to employment or onto a

course in Art, Performing Arts or Media.

Performing Arts Practice

These courses are for people who are interested in developing their performance skills. You

will be able to develop your technique in dance, drama and music and will have opportunities

for work experience in the Chapel arts centre. This will involve working with visiting artists

and practitioners, local schools and other community groups.

You will also have a work placement through the creative community and could be working

with a theatre company or arts workshop facilitators.

Audio Media Production

Our courses in Audio Media Production give you the opportunity to explore sound engineering,

music production, radio and TV production and online media. You will learn through taking part in

projects that include recording radio programmes and broadcasting on the College radio station,

producing live music sessions for radio broadcast and WebTV, live music events and making

music recordings. Recording what you have done in a blog will help you to keep track of what

you have achieved and will provide evidence for the qualification.

The courses are employment focused and work based learning makes up a significant part of the

programme. This could be through working on commercial recording sessions, live events and

projects in the Chapel arts centre.

Our courses in Art & Design provide an opportunity for people who are interested in working in

the Art and Design industry. You can explore your creativity within our vibrant and spacious art

studio through courses that will help you develop applied skills and techniques. You will have

the opportunity to experience working with a wide range of art forms before specialising in your

chosen area.

Through visits to artists’ studios you will experience a range of specialist workshops and get the

chance to work alongside professionals. There are also opportunities for working alongside other

Arts & Media courses on collaborative projects in theatre or video and to gain work experience

by working in the Chapel arts centre.

This unique programme encourages an innovative and imaginative approach to clay based

practice. The emphasis is on developing your creativity through applied practical skills,

technical knowledge and understanding. This course could be used to complement other Art

and Design programmes or as a stand-alone subject.

A Level Media Studies

A Level Art & Design (fine art)

This course offers students the chance to study subjects and learn skills that will be useful in

whatever career they choose. Looking at everything from TV to Twitter, you will learn about

the institutions behind the media and the role media has in educating us about the world and

shaping our opinions towards it.

It will develop your analytical, critical and communication skills by analysing a range of media

products, helping you to learn new production skills through coursework where you can produce

media for radio, film, print and the web. You will also explore the music industry to discover how

digital technology is changing the way media products are produced and distributed, and how

we can access them.

Relevant to any career, this course specifically supports pathways into the arts, media, marketing,

radio, the music industry, teaching or film. It will also give you a wide range of transferable skills

(research, analysis, communication) that will be useful in the future study of any subject, and in

the workplace.

This course offers every opportunity to work with different Art and Design disciplines including

painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking. Your teachers will support you in building a portfolio

of art work that demonstrates the skills and knowledge you have acquired on the course. You will

be able to record your ideas and progression in an appropriate sketchbook format.

The course will broaden your knowledge and understanding of the work of great artists and art

practitioners. As your creative skills develop you will gain the ability to explore new topics and

improve your research techniques. These transferable skills are much sought after by universities

and employers in the creative industries.

environment but not necessarily in a performing or technical role. Throughout the course you can

This training course is for people who intend to find work in the Audio/Media industry and is structured

around three main areas: Skills Development, Work Based Learning and Employment Preparation.

Skills Development

These sessions take place in our recording

studios and focus on how to use audio equipment

including mixing consoles, microphones and

signal processors as well as learning about

computer based recording, digital editing and

developing listening skills.

Work Based Learning

A vital part of developing new skills is

applying them to real work situations. Part

of the training course is spent working on

sessions in our studios. These range from

music performances, filmed and recorded for

our WebTV series, to recording sessions for

choirs, bands, voice-overs and working on

theatre productions and live performances in

technical and administrative roles.

Employment Preparation

Understanding how the industry is structured,

what jobs are available and the skills that are

required is an essential part of employment

preparation. You will produce a CV that

reflects your skills and experience and work

with our specialist arts & media employment

coordinator to find a job in your home area.

Previous trainees have found employment

in live sound, recording studios, arts event

coordination, music-based youth work and

community radio.

Creative Community Life at the RNC

Working with arts professionals is an essential part of understanding what working in the arts is

really like. The Chapel creative community is a group of arts practitioners, some of them based at

the Chapel, that we work with regularly.

This relationship creates opportunities for work based learning, guest workshops and work

placements with a range of different arts organisations including, theatre groups, music workshop

facilitators and performers.

As an Arts & Media student, you will have free access to all of the facilities on campus, from the spa and gym to assistive computer technologies.
