Put on your comfortable shoes and get ready for a 4 km walking tour of art-making. For three days every July, art fills the sidewalks of Old

Strathcona. The Whyte Avenue Art Walk is an outdoor studio and gal-lery featuring hundreds of working artists.

This unique event is not juried and has very few guidelines. It is open to everyone and showcases a range of talent. “There is so much hidden talent in Edmonton. It’s exciting to see artists come out of their shells and put themselves out there,” says artist Michelle Stregger, who coordinates the exhibition spaces within The Paint Spot. "The Whyte Avenue Art Walk is important because you get to see art that may have otherwise stayed hidden in storage” says Stregger.

It all started back in 1995 with 35 artists and a few pedestrians. Today there are almost 400 artists and more than 40,000 visitors. You are invited to wander among glorious florals, graffiti-style slogans, delicate etchings, mosaic butterflies and renaissance-style portraits. There really is something for everyone. “It is about original art work made by local artists,” says Honey Case, Art Walk's Volunteer Coordinator. "Art is usually a solitary process full of introspection," she explains. "But at the Art Walk, hundreds of artists gather to see what others are doing. It is interesting and educational to see art works develop over the weekend".

Conversation it is not just between artists. Everyone is invited to meet the artists and ask questions about styles or techniques.

Perhaps all this art-making has gotten you thinking about starting art yourself? "We have found some of our best instructors at this festival" says event organizer Kim Fjordbotten. She owns The Paint Spot, a popu-lar art store just off Whyte Ave. Pastel artist David Shkolny, oil paint-er Oksana Zhelisko and mixed-media collage artist Carol Collin will be teaching workshops at the shop this fall. These and other instructors can be seen along the avenue from 101 Street to 108 Street.

For emerging artists the exhibition holds a promise of sales, commis-sions and perhaps an opportunity to be featured in a gallery. The Daffo-dil Gallery from 124 Street is out looking for 10 artists to feature in “Off Whyte 13”, the annual held over show. "You can vote for up to three artists and the winners with the most votes will join our top ten to make “Off-Whyte 13” a wonderful bakers dozen" says Gallery owner and participating artist Karen Bishop. Speaking of galleries, several of Whyte Avenue’s restaurants host art ex-hibitions year-round. Block 1912, The Next Act, B's Diner and Chiantis have local artists featured on their walls. “This is what community spirit is all about!” says Fjordbotten. Her shop hosts two artist-run gallery spaces: the Naess Gallery and the Artisan Nook. “The bulk of the ad-ministrative and volunteer work lands with my coworkers, on company time and with The Paint Spot’s resources. It is a labour of love” she says, “It is amazing what can be accomplished with a handful of dedicated people. We do it to promote the artists and to celebrate the good things in Old Strathcona".

Bringing the studio to the Avenue is an assertive way to promote visual artists. Pedestrians are exposed to a rare

feast of diverse artistic ventures, and, if they are curious about what they see, they can strike up a conversation with the artists themselves.

The Whyte Avenue Art Walk provides new patrons with the opportunity to meet emerging local talent. It is our hope you will become a patron and a collector of art, not just a consumer. Many people come back year after year to add to their collections. Investing in a painting means you are investing in an artist’s career, or at least providing some money so they can keep painting.

Buy what you love - not what matches your sofa. You can always get a matching sofa later. Many patrons worry about the art in their home matching. Often they will buy only from one or two artists. Other collectors prefer an eclectic approach and will choose similar themes created by different artists. Not sure where to start? Walk several blocks before making your decision. You may notice a theme that appeals to you. Whether it is birds, skulls or landscapes, there is bound to be a lot of diversity from which to choose.

The best art is a conversation piece and focal point for your home or offi ce. Why not get the whole story? Make time to talk to the artists. They are just as nervous as you. Please don't evaluate the art by asking the dreaded question, "So

how long did it take you to paint this?" Most Art Walk Artists have been educated to respond "ALL MY LIFE!”.

This is true. There is a lot of research, practice and failed attempts that go into each painting. Many layers of paint are hidden behind most fi nished works. Few artists keep track of time anyway. Time is irrelevant; a painting is fi nished when it is fi nished. Even Picasso could work quickly creating some works in minutes but then took years to complete other works.

How much to budget for art? There is little need to haggle at The Whyte Avenue Art Walk. The work is all affordable but there is no standard pricing. No two works are the same. No two artists are the same. Prices along the venue vary greatly and are related to the experience level and confi dence of each artist. Size of work and cost of materials are other factors.
