LAYOUT RULES 101All artworks require 3mm of bleed. Bleed refers to the area around your product that all background images and any content that should reach the edge of the page should extend to. This is to avoid unwanted white gaps which may occur during the cropping of the artwork.

We also require a 10mm margin from the edge of the page, that all content that should not get cut off should be positioned. Always lay out your documents in the open end size, including the all-around 3mm bleed. The area between the trim line and the bleed line will not be visible in your finished printed product.

Use our free artwork templates to assist you in the creation of your artwork which are available for download off of our website.

OPEN END SIZE - When you completely open your product, you see what is considered as open end size.

FINISHED SIZE - The finished size is the size of the product that you would see after processing, such as folding, and the product is in hand. It is also the size that you would choose during the ordering process.

* The diagrams above show how the multiple sides of a product are layed out in open end size.

* The image above shows how multiple sides appear in finished size after folding.

All artwork requires a minimum of 3mm of bleed all around the document. Bleed refers to the area around your product that all background images and any content that should reach the edge of the page should extend to. This is to avoid unwanted white gaps which may occur during the trimming of the final product on large guillotines.

It is also recommended to have a minimum of 5mm safety area. This is an invisible line on the inside of the design. All important text and logos should not pass this line as it might be trimmed off on the large guillotines. 5mm is minimum, but a larger safety area may be necessary if you are designing larger jobs such as Posters and Banners.

Please study the example right, and on page 25, in order to understand the importance of bleed.

1: Ensure final file supplied is in the preferred Pdf X-1a format to ensure maximum quality and no loss of information.

2: All images used must be hi-resolution (minimum 300dpi)

3: Ensure that the bleed area is also exported in the pdf (check page dimensions of the exported file, within the pdf reader to ensure it is included).

4: Ensure all fonts used are converted to curves, embedded in the pdf or supplied separately.

5: Do not supply multiple pages in spreads. As we print on large oversize sheets with multiple pages on, we utilise high end imposition software to ensure all pages are printed in the correct order and sequence.

TRIM LINE

Bleed Line - When trimmed, the bleed area is cut off. This ensures that there are no white edges around your final product. Recommended bleed area to be 3mm all around.

Safety Line

This is an imaginary line which shows the point that important text, and logos should not cross over. This ensures no important text gets trimmed off, and keeps the document appearing neat.

Recommended safety area to be minimum 5mm. This may be more on larger products such as posters, banners etc, or to suite the style of design.

ARTWORK CHECK 101Our standard artwork check is complementary with every order to ensure that it is print-ready. In the artwork check we will look at the following:

• Is the artwork saved in the correct format (Pdf, Indd, Cdr, Psd, Etc)? Note: MS Office files such as Word, Pub, or Excel files are NOT print ready files

• Do the number of sides supplied correspond with the product ordered?

• Is the document the correct size* (has bleed and margins been provided)?

• Automatic conversion into CMYK for full colour prints and Greyscale for one colour (black & white) prints. Note: Conversion between RGB or SPOT colours to CMYK, may create slight colour variations**

• Have all fonts been embedded, expanded or converted into curves, and are all the images used been supplied in high resolution (300dpi)?

Our customer service team will contact you immediately by email if the artwork presents any of the problems mentioned above.

* We will attempt to re scale your artwork to the correct size if the provided size is incorrect. This may not always be possible and is design dependant due to bleed limitations. If scaling is necessary, this may cause a decrease in the resolution of the final product. If scaled design will not print nicely, we shall contact you to amend the design.

** If colour specific work is required, please enquire with one of our representatives in order to circumvent colour conversion issues.

- Please Note: If an open file is supplied and extensive corrections need to be made, there may be additional charges billed per hour.

PRINT FACTDid you know

63% of people think that print is

the most credible method of advertising.

in part because we trust printed materials – we’ve grown up with books, magazines and newspapers being reliable sources of information. So running a high quality print advert, or producing high quality print marketing, can tap into this perceived credibility.

The key point to improving your business’ credibility through advertising is to make high quality, well-written and consistent adverts – wherever they are.

FILE FORMAT 101Please only supply a PDF format file for print ready artwork. Ensure that you have not used any special or space characters in the document’s file name.

Files in PDF format are both for you and us the most secure way to produce a high-quality printed product, because this format has been especially developed for the exchange of data between designer & pre-press organisations.

When creating a PDF file directly from the layout programme, please use the PDF/X Standards (PDF/X3-Standard or PDF/X1a-Standard). We recommend picking the additional setting “compatibility 1.3” when saving your artwork files. This will prevent any errors that may occur with layers, and transparancies that might be used. NB - Please ensure the bleed area is exported when making the pdf files.

Under exceptional circumstances, we may accept files in the native open file format, or as a jpg. Note, errors and quality issues may arise when using either of these two formats. A further proof will be supplied for signing before print.

* Microsoft WORD, EXCEL and POWER-POINT etc. do not create print ready artwork. We recommend using specialty design software such as Adobe Indesign, Photoshop or Coreldraw, to do your designs in.

PDF

* JPG files convert all vector items, such as logos and text, into a bitmap format. This may create a feathering effect around the type and reduces the crispness of the text and logos.

DIGITAL PRINTING

Digital printing refers to methods of printing from a digital-based image directly to a variety of media. It usually refers to professional printing where small-run jobs are printed using large-format and/or high-resolution laser printers. Digital printing has a higher cost per page than more traditional offset printing methods, but this price is usually offset by avoiding the cost of all the technical steps required to make printing plates etc. It also allows for on-demand printing, short turnaround time, and even a modification of the image or text (variable data) used for each impression.

Offset printing is a commonly used printing technique in which the inked image is transferred (or “offset”) from a plate to a rubber blanket, then to the printing surface. When used in combination with the lithographic process, which is based on the repulsion of oil and water, the offset technique employs a flat (planographic) image carrier on which the image to be printed obtains ink from ink rollers, while the non-printing area attracts a water-based film (called “fountain solution”), keeping the non-printing areas ink-free.
