Message from the Mayor

Welcome to the Town of Moosomin. I invite you to explore Moosomin to discover all the opportunities available in our great community.

I am very proud to call the Town of Moosomin home. Moosomin is an excellent place to live, work, raise a family and retire. This is in part due to our diversified economy of oil, gas, agriculture, and potash mining to name a few. We are proud of the many services we have to offer our residents; from quality health care

to our educational facilities and our many recreational opportunities. Our quality of life is second to none because of our rural setting and our convenient access, due to being situated along the Trans Canada Highway and the mainline of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

We are very excited about our future and the many business and personal opportunities available in our region and community... DISCOVER MOOSOMIN, “The Town on the Move.”

Come and stay with us today!

Larry Tomlinson Mayor of Moosomin

Walking Tour Brochures feature 33 locations; these are available at the Library or the Town

Office.

The McNaughton Co. Stores are a Provincial Heritage Site. McNaughton’s operated from 1882

to 1956, the longest continuously operating commercial enterprise in Saskatchewan.

Community History & Local Legends:

Moosomin was named after Chief Moosomin, an Indian chief who lived in the Battleford area.

(The Moosomin Reserve is three km east of Cochin, SK.) There is a line drawing of Chief

Moosomin in the Town Office, by local artist, Dustin George.

Moosomin began just before the CPR reached here on June 30, 1882. The first structures were

shacks and tents. Because Moosomin was the first town in Saskatchewan, the North (1884) and

South (1902) Cemeteries are very interesting to browse around. The North Cemetery contains

the grave site of the victims of a mass murder in Welwyn in 1901.

The “Hockey Hall of Fame” in the Communiplex features the jerseys of local athletes who

achieved prominence.

Famous Residents:

Harry Mullin was a Victoria Cross recipient for action at Passchendaele, Belgium in W.W.I. He

was later Sergeant at Arms in the Saskatchewan Legislature. The plaque recognizing Mr. Mullen

was moved from his farm to Cenotaph Park in Moosomin.

Dr. Harold Chestnut received the Military Cross while he was a Surgeon in W.W.II.

General Andrew McNaughton, son of R. D. McNaughton (one of the founders of McNaughton’s

Store), was commander of the Canadian Army overseas in W.W. II. Later, he was Minister of

National Defense.

General Fred Sharp was Deputy Commander of NORAD (North American Air Defense

Command). Following this, in 1969, General Sharp was appointed Chief of Canada’s Defense

Staff.

Gordon Thiessen, Governor of the Bank of Canada (1994 – 2001), was born in Ontario; however,

Ethnographic Representations:

Moosomin was originally settled by people of British origin (English, Scottish, and Irish). Some

came from Ontario and some, directly from Great Britain. With the recent growth of Moosomin

and area, there are people from several countries in the community.

buildings. (These brochures are available at the Town Office and the Library.)

Indian Medicine Wheel and other artifacts.

Remnants of the old Moose Mountain Trail are still visible. This trail led from Fort Ellice (now St.

Lazare, MN) to the Moose Mountains (now Moose Mountain Provincial Park).

Geological Landmarks:

Moosomin is situated on long grass prairie between the Pipestone Valley, eight km south of

Moosomin, and the Qu’Appelle Valley, 40 km north. This area is very active in potash

production and has an accelerating oilfield development.

Moosomin Regional Park is situated on a lake, several kilometres long, which was formed when

the Pipestone Creek was dammed.

Local Traditions:

“Bethlehem Live” has been held outdoors just before Christmas for the past three years. All the

churches co-operate in staging it.
