    to branch out. We had a chat

    with the head of Sixth Form

    Pass Rates

    In 2008/2009 we were rated Outstanding by

    Ofsted who reported that, AS and A-Levelsuccess rates were particularly good, includingthe proportion of high grades and this successhas continued. Some of our many subjects with100% achievement include human biology,psychology, Urdu, physics, sociology, government& politics and further maths. In AS mathematics,61% of our students achieved higher grades andthe A2 Sociology results included four A* with

    Nicola Wain, aged 36, came back to

    Assistant Director, Sixth Form & University Centre

    In my role I co-ordinate the courses we offer and make sure our students learning experience is the bestpossible, from organising exams and providing support to ensuring the excellence of our teaching staff.

    After earning a politics & sociology degree at Exeter University and her Postgraduate Certificate in Education atYork University, Pauline built up valuable experience teaching in a whole range of environments. In 1993 she

    joined Bedford College as a lecturer, moving up to Course Manager and finally Assistant Director. She is a seniorexaminer for a major examinations board and has been involved with examination marking for the past 20 years.

    What I really love most is teaching thats my passion, says Pauline. I teach A-Level sociology and politics,and really enjoy taking students on trips and helping them to experience their course in a different environment.Its great to see students motivated to succeed, and they love seeing their results day photos when they do!

    Nav Ahmed

    A-Level law and business Lecturer,Course Manager for Part-Time A-Levelsand GCSEs including languages

    Nav graduated from a French and Germandegree at Warwick University beforecompleting a Postgraduate Certificate inEducation in modern languages.He then went on to study a law degree atBirmingham University and has now beenteaching at Bedford College for two years.

    Nav says, Teaching at Bedford College isgreat as you have the opportunity to teach

    a wide spectrum of students at all levels.Having just become a personal tutor I amkeen to support students and show themthat like me they can go into an organisationand achieve and progress.

    Nav added: The teachers here are allspecialists and have expert knowledge anddegrees in the areas they teach, meaningstudents are getting really great support and

    knowledge of their chosen subjects. Thepastoral care here is very important too andwe make sure students get one-to-one helpand advice in all areas. College can reallybridge the gap between school and universityand prepare students for their future.

    Tim Bartlett

    A-Level physical education, psychologyand mathematics

    Tim graduated from De Montfort Universitywith a sport science degree, specialising insports biomechanics and psychology. He hasbeen teaching for seven years at the Collegeon our sport science and psychology &crime university-level programmes, aswell as teaching A-Levels and focusing onGCSE psychology and mathematics.

    Tim says I particularly like the way that

    teaching at the College isnt only to getstudents through exams, and that I amable to innovate learning strategies tomake them more interesting and relevantto the students.

    Nick Allen

    A-Level physics Lecturer, Course Leaderfor Level 3 Forensic Science and GCSEhuman physiology

    Nick gained an AGSM (Guitar) from theGuildhall School of Music and Drama and hascompleted a degree in maritime defence andmilitary technology, whilst he was in the RoyalNavy. He also holds a degree in sciences fromAnglia Ruskin and an MSc in astrophysics fromLondon University.

    Nick has been teaching since he left theRoyal Navy about 15 years ago. He

    started teaching physics in a grammar schoolthen became head of physics at a Londoncomprehensive. He has been at BedfordCollege for three years.

    Nick says I love the variety in the teaching atBedford College there is always somethingto stretch your abilities, and you have to bevery flexible. Not a day goes by without melearning something new and valuable.

    Bedford College offers students a relaxed,but business-like and highly professionalatmosphere. The range of courses is excellent,and in the sciences we are lucky to havesubject experts in each area.

    Archaeology AS A2

    This subject develops your understanding of sources, methods and concepts used in archaeology today.

    You will learn about the nature of archaeologyical evidence, methods of recovery and the interpretationof data.

    Survey and excavation methods. Post-excavation dating and interpretation. Religion and ritual.

    You should have a keen interest in the subject and a good standard of literacy.

    Archaeology links well with most science and non-science higher education courses, and can lead tocareers in museum work, research or conservation and planning.

    Art & Design AS A2

    This course has been designed to enable you to put your creative skills into practice. You will learnabout visual elements and explore different approaches to producing creative art and design work.You will develop personal work in painting, drawing and sculpture.

    Use and understanding of formal elements and creative skills.

    You will need a GCSE in art or a related subject at A*-C.

    I decided to come to Bedford

    College as I couldnt do the

    courses I wanted to do at my

    previous school. The College

    provides exceptional learning

    facilities such as the library,

    and the canteen area is great

    as it lets you catch up on

    work whilst eating.

    Im already fluent in French

    and Italian and have a keen

    Dunstable College however

    there was more opportunity

    at Bedford College to study

    what I really wanted to. Ive

    always enjoyed the sciences

    and my courses at Bedford

    really allow me to specialise

    in them.

    Our tutors are really

    friendly and create a great

    environment, I also spenda lot of time researching

    in the Library and have

    used Student Services

    Chemistry AS A2

    Chemistry is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play

    in living things. You will be able to carry out your own experiments in a laboratory controlledenvironment and take part in a variety of demonstrations.

    Structure, binding and main group chemistry. Introducing organic chemistry. Energetic, kinetics and equilibria.

    You will need GCSE mathematics at grade A*-B and science (Double Award) or chemistry at grade A*-B.

    Chemistry is a must for higher education courses in chemical science, biochemistry, pharmaceuticals andmedicine. It is also a good starting point for a career as a laboratory assistant, food technologist,materials chemist, animal husbandry and horticulture.

    Citizenship AS A2

    Citizenship looks at the most important concepts in society, including the responsibilities of theindividual and the community, authority, co-operation, conflict, democracy, equality, fairness, freedom,

    justice, order and power. Although it is not necessary, it would be helpful if alongside this you also study

    A-Level law, politics or sociology.

    The citizen and political process. The citizen and the community.

    You should have a keen interest in the subject.

    Citizenship is regarded as a useful subject for entry on to a higher education course. Citizenship isregarded as a useful subject to entry on to higher education courses in politics, law or sociology.

    Communication & Cultural Studies AS A2

    Communication & Cultural studies teaches you the importance of good communications skills.You will also study the effect of modern culture in depth from music to celebrity.

    Understanding communication and culture. The individual and contemporary culture. Communicating culture.

    Communication and culture in practice.

    You should have an interest in people and communication, and an appreciation of issues aroundpopular culture.

    Communication and culture provides excellent preparation for entry on to higher education courses incommunications, media or cultural studies, as well as humanities, social science and business studies.

    Economics AS A2

    Economics gives you the chance to look at the fundamental forces which affect our daily lives, directlyand indirectly. This includes decisions that you may have to make on such topics as basic purchases,housing, employment, international trade and the governments role in the economy. You will also beable to apply the economic theories to real world situations and practices.

    Competitive markets. Managing the economy. Business economics and economic efficiency. The global economy.

    You should have a keen interest in the subject and GCSE mathematics at grade A*-C.

    Economics privides excellent preparation for higher education study in economics, finance andaccounting subjects.

    English Literature AS A2

    This subject offers you the opportunity to explore a range of work, including contemporary novels, classicalplays and 20th century poetry, to help improve your writing style and develop your analytical skills.

    Texts in context. Creative study. Reading for meaning. Extended essay and Shakespeare study.

    You will need GCSE English or English language at grade A*-C.

    English Literature provides excellent preparation for the workplace by developing communication, analyticaland functional skills that will also provide a good basis for higher education study in a wide range of subjects.

    Environmental Studies AS A2

    If you have an interest in environmental issues and how the balance of nature is being disrupted by humanactivities, then this subject is for you. You will learn about global warming, acid rain, ozone depletion andwaste disposal in detail, along with the ways that these problems can be prevented and solved.

    Energy, the atmosphere and hydrosphere.

    The lithosphere. The biosphere. Pollution and physical resource management.

    You should have an interest in the physical environment and how you personally can, and do, affect it.

    Environmental studies combines well with most subjects. Specific career paths are in planning,conservation, recreation and resource management.

    Further Mathematics AS

    Further mathematics is specifically developed for those of you who have a very extensive interest in andtalent for the subject.

    Further mathematics.

    Decision mathematics. Statistics.

    You will need to have GCSE mathematics at grade A*-B. You will also need to study A-Levelmathematics alongside this subject.

    Further mathematics is useful for any mathematics based subject at higher education level.

    Film Studies AS

    This subject is ideal if you have an interest in films and the cinema industry. You will study a wide range

    of popular Hollywood and British cinema, gain a thorough understanding of production and learn howto analyse films to expose their inner or hidden meaning.

    Exploring film form. British and American film.

    You should have good oral and written communication skills.

    Geology is the scientific study of the earth and its history. You will look at the nature of earth materials

    and processes, geographical hazards, minerals, rocks and fossils. Foundation geology. Practical geology. Geology and the human environment. Interpreting the geographical record. Geological investigations. Geological themes.

    You should have a strong interest in this subject and GCSE science at grade A*-C.

    Government & Politics AS A2

    This subject introduces you to the practical aspects of the society we live in. It provides depth andbackground to the political topics discussed daily in the media enabling you to look from local, nationaland global perspectives.

    Human Biology AS A2

    This fascinating course will give you an insight into much more than just how the body works. With linksto the fields of medicine, genetics and biotechnology, the course will introduce you to many aspects ofmedical research.

    Physical Education will teach you the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. You will study the psychologicaleffects of exercise and how to analyse and evaluate an athletes performance. You will also look atcontemporary sports issues such as the role of video technology in sport.

    Physics AS A2
