HELLO

Page 11: Ashley Cox - Portfolio '13

Let me introduce myself,

I have recently graduated from Plymouth University in graphic communications where I gained an Honours Degree.

Originally from the Midlands I chose this University to study my chosen profession because of their impressive results, the quality of teaching and the location being situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK, close to Dartmoor and the sea.

I now have confidence in being able to offer a wide range of graphic skills but my specialism is in digital media and interactive design – the design and production of apps, websites, digital publications aswell as designs that can involve and excite the viewer. This area continues to expand especially as branding moves out into the built environment but I am keen to keep print based media alive, at all times experimenting how my designs can translate into the digital world.

My recent ‘home; has allowed me to exploit my other passion – photography – and I use this medium for both work and as a hobby always searching for that illusive iconic moment to catch for perpetuity. Devon and Cornwall’s seascapes and landscapes have been an inspiration over the last three years and I continue to experiment whenever I can.

I am now privileged to be part of this industry with the ability and opportunity to effect change on an infinite variety of fronts and I am truly excited about my future and what I can offer employers either in full time occupation, internships or as a freelance designer.

Digital Publication

I designed and developed an iPad app focused around the time travel debate. Being both a humorous and informative digital publication this app’s unique feature is a choice based navigation system, whereby the viewer would determine the path through the app via a series of multiple choice questions, depending on if the viewer is a believer or non-believer.

The Urban Print Room

Pavement is concept gallery that has been created as part of the brief. A fictional company, location and names. All the work that follows is a result of my own personal interest in photography and the film medium within it.

Concept behind the brand:

PAVEMENT is a new up and coming photographic gallery in the heart of London, specializing in two key elements within the photographic industry, these are:

1. To bring the film medium back to the 21st century by only exhibiting film prints & running frequent workshops to enlighten people.2. The celebrate the urban landscape that is ever changing and growing around us.

The chosen typeface for all way finding aids within the Marine building along side a single direction pictogram I designed.

29

The Marine Centre is a new Marine based building on the Plymouth University campus. During its construction I was asked to produce the way finding aid’s for navigation too and around the building.

My concept was based on light with a clean and elegant typographic style. I created a light installation concept which would sit inside the reception of the new building. This installation would be live and ever changing with the fluctuation of people entering the building, the more people that enter, the faster the light would revolve. Similar to that of a real wave.

I also developed a full set of pictograms for use all around the building. Main reception and individual signage was also developed.

A fully functioning digital publication for use on the iPad. This app was designed to be a information based reference app on the uses and history of everyday punctuation marks we know and use on a day-to-day basis. Split into three subheadings, this app explains the uses of each mark and then further shows you the differences in aesthetics between each mark. It also acts as a historical reference aid and introduces the reader to certain marks and how they came into existence then developed throughout history.

This app is not available on the app store.

Developed and designed using InDesign and imported into Dreamweaver to add links, finally edited using pugpig and Xcode to apply the app to an iPad.

Lens was a live brief for Plymouth museum where by the winning entry would be printed and used along side the piece of work by Glenn Carter, a large stained glass object. My design came second. I created a promotional flyer for an art installation involving natural light. My take on this piece was to also create something that was almost entirely dependant on light. I based my design on a quote from Glenn during a talk I attended regarding his work.

Exhibited in Plymouth Library for several months. (See images)

WOOKEYFARM

LIVE BRIEFBranding & Identity

47

Page 52: Ashley Cox - Portfolio '13

Wookey Farm is a dairy farm located near Bristol, UK. They produce goat milks smoothies along with other products. This project was a rebrand of their existing company, from company name to bottle labels.

I wanted to show the initial confusing nature people experienced when hearing about a goats milk smoothie, then instantly persuade them using typography into trying that very thing.

MARRIAGE/ DIVORCE

Page 57: Ashley Cox - Portfolio '13

In this brief I had too graphically convey marriage and divorce statistics in the UK & Ireland. We were given a set of information in which we needed to decipher and convert into graphics.

I chose to work with the information in 6 groups: Single, Marriage, Divorce, Separated, Re-married and Widowed. This accounted for everyone in the UK & Ireland.
