Standard bank Limited | The People 5

Departments of SBL If the jobs are not organized considering their interrelationship and are not allocated in a

particular department it would be very difficult to control the system effectively. The

Departments of Standard Bank Limited, Banani Branch are given:

The People I have come across various personalities during my stay at the bank as an intern. The first

person I met at the bank was the operation manager of the branch and also a senior executive

of the bank. He was very welcoming and encouraging towards me.

My initial supervisor was an officer who was in charge of Cheques and internal expenditures

(General Ledger). She was very friendly and supportive to me. The person in charge of

Accounts was also very nice to me. They would ask me if I needed any help with anything

and whether the current working conditions were satisfactory.

The people are very professional at work but it also felt as if the people at the bank were one

big family. The organizational culture can be described as Clan Culture. Clan oriented

cultures are family-like, with a focus on mentoring, nurturing, and doing things together. The

employees mostly come from middle-class households. They give priority and show respect

to each other in terms of seniority. The employees are mostly risk avoiders rather than risk

takers, this is because they strictly follow a system or procedure and never take decisions or

actions outside that system. Hierarchy is also strictly maintained as the work of any

subordinate usually needs authorization of a superior.

My Work and Contribution During my internship in the Standard Bank Limited I have performed jobs in the every

department exists in the Banani Branch. I worked in General Banking, Credit and Foreign

Exchange all departments. Some Descriptions are given below:

General Banking

Account opening section

Step 1: Receiving filled up application in Bank’s prescribed form mentioning what type of

account is desired to be opened

Step 2: The form is filled up by the application him/ her

Step 3: Two copies of passport size photographs from individual are taken; in case of firms

photographs of all partners are taken. Application must sign specimen signature sheet and

give Authorized Officer accepts the application

Step 4: Minimum balance is deposited and only cash is accepted

Step 5: Account is opened and a Cheque book and pay-in-slip book is given

Letter Writing or emailing

During the internship program I was assigned to send emails and letters to both corporate

clients and internal employees. The employee letters were official letters as replies to certain

queries or notifications of insurance bills or settlement of vehicle loans, house loans etc. The

corporate letters were business letters sent to different companies regarding their funds

transfer, Letter of credit issues, balance of payments etc.

Standard bank Limited | My Interactions 7

Accounts Department

The accounts department is the most delicate and the most confidential department in a bank.

The main task of this department is to record all kind of transaction of the branch, confirming

accuracy, preparing statement etc. under the computerized banking system, today the clean

cash statement and the supplementary statement is in party ledger vouchers are printed of the

computer. I did those works with the officer in the respective departments. Sometime bank is

nominated for collection share money. This transaction also done by accounts department and

here need to open a sub-gl account.

My Interactions In these past few months I have met and interacted with a lot of new individuals. The people

at the Accounts were very nice and welcoming in their attitudes towards me. At first I was

more focused on my tasks rather than communicating with all those around me. I used to

think that it was in the office culture to keep yourself busy with your work. After being

around those people I realized that was not the case. Everyone was often talking with each

other unless they had a lot of work at hand. I warmed up to the idea and also participated as

much as I could. Even when I didn’t chat a lot they would ask me questions make me

converse with them. It was my good fortune to have worked with these folks.

My supervisor was the one with whom I would converse the most. She taught me about

things in the bank and also inquired about my life outside work every now and then. He and I

would usually say our prayers together. The best part about this department were its

discussions and banter amongst the officers and commercials. They would do it as if they

were very close friends. During these discussions I would sometimes participate. These

discussions usually involved the current affairs of the world.

Standard bank Limited | Lessons Learned and Accomplishments 8

Difficulties Faced There were many unexpected difficulties and I tried my best to deal with them.

On my first week I took time to adjust with the new environment and lifestyle. Dressing up

formally with a shirt and tie took some time to fit in with my lifestyle. As I never worked for

so many hours straight before with only a lunch break in between, I was naturally exhausted

at first. Over time I got used to it.

Over time my tasks kept getting more complex and longer to finish. There were points when

my tasks also kept changing. I would usually make a lot of mistakes. I would take long

periods of time to finish them. I had to redo a lot of my work. There were frustrating phrases

of my time at the bank. Eventually I got better at my tasks.

One of the biggest difficulties was the limited office space for all the staff to fit in it. Same

goes with the resources like stationary, computers and desks. Usually I would end up working

in the couches reserved for the clients with low tea tables instead of desks. Sometimes I

didn’t even get to sit. It was difficult at first to do my work like that, as I kept working on a

routine and figured out the periods when scarcity was highest; I finally managed to get

through with that whole routine. But I still had to borrow stationery like stapler and calculator

from whoever could spare them to me.

All these difficulties were actually very trivial when I think about it now. That is most

probably because overtime I was able to cope with these problems or deal with them. The

lesson I learned was that no job would be simple, easy and problem-free. I will always face

difficulties and I need to be prepared to tackle them as best possible.

Lessons Learned and Accomplishments

Personally along with professionally, this internship really helped me in becoming a better

executive for myself. There were few situations I found myself in, where I had to speak for

myself if I wasn’t comfortable, and be more argumentative then I am used to. This was

Standard bank Limited | Lessons Learned and Accomplishments 9

extremely necessary because everybody has such a different outlook and perspective on

situations. My internship allows me to do so. There are some points regarding it:

Learnt Banking operation of a commercial Bank: We are student of Business, so

learning of business operation is always appreciate able to us. And now days banking

operation is one of the desired learning topic by the students. I got that chance in my

internship. And my supervisor was very friendly and dynamic person. So he assigned

different jobs of the bank. And I learnt many things from the working with those.

Developed my interpersonal skills: The internship program helped me a lot

developing my interpersonal skills. While making clear the various benefits of

different deposit schemes to prospective clients and convincing them to open accounts

in this bank, my negotiation skills improved significantly. Besides I also dealt with

customers who came to the bank with complains and managed to give them proper

solution. I also learnt much corporate behavior during my stay in the bank. These

dealings improved my communication and interpersonal skills. I also know about the

mortgage system and what are the policies customer should to face to take loan. It’s a

huge process and bank should check CIB report and helps me to learn how to check a

CIB report.

Personal Development: If I talk about the personal development, I would firstly

mention punctuality. My punctuality has been improved significantly since I had to

attend office everyday in time. Professionalism is another thing that is added to my

nature. Secondly I developed by knowledge skill. By visiting mortgage land I learn

how to check and ensure that the land is pure or problem.

Learning about Organizational Communication and Behavior: I have experienced

a formal communication among the employees in our organization. In the bank we

need to communicate with the clients and manager formally which helps us to build

up our organizational communication capabilities. In Standard Bank Limited I have

enjoyed their official work timing. If we done with our works at an earliest time, we

can leave the office. This culture made us more interested to do the works.

Discipline: Discipline maintaining at SBL Banani Branch is a main thing. Besides

hard working potential this company highlights every individual’s discipline level

individually. So far I have maintained myself fit here, for example – I always

maintain my office timing & dress up properly.

Standard bank Limited | Expectations vs. Reality 10

Experience Gain: Joining at Standard Bank Limited Banani Branch is my first

working experience I am feeling very fortunate that my first step of my carrier is in a

perfect place.

Personal Development I learnt a lot about professional life and the world outside the class. It made me change a lot

of my old habits and learn some new disciplines. I developed a sense of duty as I was given

responsibilities. Finishing my tasks diligently was my responsibility and if not done properly

it would have negative effects on others and the whole organization as a result.

By being responsible meant being timely. I had to reach office by time and finish my work on

time as well. I learnt to adapt to situations when they were demanded. Also I learned to work

under pressure during deadlines. Deadlines were usually before weekends or end of the

month.

I learned about patience. Some of my tasks were repetitive which involved a lot of searching

through documents, rushing them only slowed down progress even more or could have even

lead to serious errors. I learned to focus and be vigilant. This kind of work demands that.

Losing focus even for even a moment can lead to make mistakes that will force me to redo

my whole work again. It leads to waste of time and resources. It also made me learn about

accountability, I had to do my work properly and report any errors on my part.

I learned mostly about practical life which involved work as a part of it. I learned that I could

never stop learning, not only on the job but while living. It is the best way to keep up with the

world.

Expectations vs. Reality

Before starting this job I had certain expectations about how things would be. It’s safe to say

that most of my expectations did not exactly align with the reality. Below are a few reasons

why this is the case.

Standard bank Limited | Internship Experience and Career Plan: 11

I thought I could apply the things I learned in class. That these last 4 years had prepared me

for any challenge I might face, and I had the knowledge and acumen to do everything

required of me. There was a huge difference in practice as compared to theory taught in class.

In the class we talk and write about things, in practice we actually have to do them. If we

were given tasks to do at class rather than just learning then we would have more ideas about

the practice that would help us in the work place.

In reality I spent the first month coming to terms with the fact that I knew very little. As

much as I was hoping someone would ask me to enter a bunch of data into Excel so I could

be a show off and use all the keyboard shortcuts, it doesn't happen. Instead I go back to

learning things I never read or heard about before.

I expected to always know what my job was from the start. I would go to work, they would

tell me exactly what was expected of me and I would always know exactly what I should be

working on at any given time. In reality I usually had very little idea of what I was doing in

the beginning. If it wasn’t for my supervisor and some of the other helpful officers I would

most probably never figure out what my job actually was.

I expected a very professional world with little or no social interactions among employees but

that wasn’t the case. Everyone was always interacting as if they have been very good friends

for a long time. This was one of the pleasant surprises about office. The people were the best

thing about the place and hopefully will always be so everywhere.

Internship Experience and Career Plan: I always thought that working in a Bank will be a boring task for me but my perception

completely changed when I started working as an intern in the Corporate Marketing Division.

Let me point out some points of working in a Bank relating my experience of working in

SBL.

You have to be on time while reporting. You can’t be one minute late but you can

never leave the office on time. Every day you must have to work minimum one hour

extra.

Standard bank Limited | Shortcomings & Recommendation 12

You have to wear full formal dress in all the seasons and even you can’t fold your

sleeve while working. Dress Code is strictly maintained here.

You have to shave your beard every day. If the people from HR can find a tiny

portion of unshaved beard then you are done for violating the Service Excellency

Guideline.

You have to maintain the chain of command very strictly as it is maintained in the

government offices and the power difference is very high though the juniors are

encouraged to give their opinions.

You will see the very high level of Professionalism here. Some people are so

professional about their work that you can’t even imagine.

By seeing my critical points one might have the idea that I don’t have any plan to work in the

banking industry but that would be completely wrong. Whenever people will call you as

“Banker” and they will get jealous of your job then you will feel proud. One more thing if

anyone can have friendly and cooperative colleagues then working in a Bank is the best place

to work.

At the end of my Internship Report I just want to say that working in a Bank is the perfect

career for me and I got the understanding after starting the internship here. The internship

experience has become the experience of life time for me.

Shortcomings & Recommendation Standard Bank Ltd is an established privatized bank in our country. Some Shortcomings and

recommendation about it operations are:

Shortcomings

Employees are few. Sometime work pressure is so high that those few employees

cannot match with workload.

SBL banking facilities are very much downgraded. Not only for customer but also for

bank employees.

SBL is an old bank but few people know about that bank.

Standard bank Limited | Shortcomings & Recommendation 13

Some employees are not well trained, they are not aware of their work.

SBL has only 3 ATM booths in Dhaka, SBL Use DBBL ATM booth for card

transaction.

Recommendation

Introduction of such services would be an upgrade of facility to the customer.

To arrange more employee for reducing the pressure.

SBL should be made advertisement on TV so that every initiative of the bank can go

at the door of customers.

Training program should be taken more seriously.

It facility are very important to faster the activities.

Try to remove any conflict within the employees as early as possible.

SBL should establish more own ATM booths in Dhaka.

Standard bank Limited | Conclusion 14

Conclusion All in all, this internship was a great learning experience for me. It has given me a real world

idea about banking process. I also got the opportunity to apply my academic knowledge and

dealt with real life problems. This experience has provided me a guideline in which way I

should pursue my career in the future.

SBL is today’s one of the leading private banks in our country. After the establishment it

brought lots of new product and services for its clients and the progress of SBL is really

satisfactory in our banking environment. From a mainly feudal agrarian base, Bangladesh has

undergone a rapid economic structural transformation towards manufacturing and services.

Being rolled this type of organization is always helpful and motivating. I got this chance and

wanted to make the best of use of it.

An internship provides the opportunity to gain hands on work experience that one just cannot

get in the classroom. First time job seekers aren’t usually desirable candidates, but companies

are willing to train them as interns and give them the experience they would need to get a job.

I consider myself lucky to have this opportunity and work as an intern at Standard Bank

Limited.

Weekly Journals

First Week On the first week of my internship program I went to Standard Bank Banani Branch at

10:00 am. First I met the manager of our branch. He welcomed me and told me about

many important matter of banking. He asked to keep the entire private matter secret.

Then he called the second manager of our branch and introduced me with him and told

him to introduce me with all the staffs of the branch. I found all the staff of bank very

friendly. Then he showed me my desk in General Banking section. I found to lady

colleagues working with me. Both of them took very good care of me and shoed my

work very carefully. My first week at Standard Bank was pretty good.

Work Done:

In m first week at Standard Bank, I worked in the general banking department. There

are three parts in the general banking department. They are- Front Desk, Cash Counter

and Account Department. In my first week I worked in the front desk. There are lot of

work have to done in the front desk. All the letters are received in the front desk. At my

first day at work I received all the letters and input them in the Letter Received Book. I

had to give a seal in all the letters and write a serial number. I also had to mention the

time and date of received letter. My first day work was very much easy. From the third

day at Standard Bank I started receiving the account payable checks. This is very

important task of front desk. When a client came to give the check I had to the received

seal in the duplicate copy of deposit slip which is pink colored and give it back to the

customer. I had to take other part of the deposit slip and staple it with the check. Then I

had to give the cross seal in upper middle part of the check. There are two kind of check

we receive. Checks that are below 5, 00,000 are regular value check. I have to give

clearing seal in those checks. Check which have more than 5, 00,000 are high value

checks. I had to give Same Day Clearing seal in those high value Checks. Another seal I

had to give in every check is Accounts pay credited. I had to entry all the check in the

Check Entry Book and transferred those checks in the Account Department. In my first

week at Standard Bank I did all those works.

Learning and Achievement:

I learned how to receive letters and how entry them in the received book.

I learned which are Regular Value Checks and High Value Checks.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 16

I learned how to ready all those checks and entry into the check entry book.

Observation/Reflections:

After finishing my first week, I was become able to match my learning and knowledge

with my academic knowledge which I learnt during my course at North South

University. Front desk is the busiest part of our branch. Two my colleagues work really

hard. They are very much sincere at their work. I learnt very good listen from them. I

observe their work. They were very much busy but always ready to teach me. I also try

to follow their instruction very carefully. I hope those works which I learnt at first week

at Standard bank will help in the future at my job life.

Notable Incidents:

At my first week there is a notable incident happen. There are serial numbers in the

entire received letter. I did a mistake and give wrong serial number in the letters. Later

when I rechecked all the letters, I found that mistake and made it correct with fluids.

Beside this my first week passed quiet successfully.

Theoretical Application:

At my first week at Standard Bank, I did very easy task. So I didn’t find any theoretical

application in those works. But I observe my colleagues; they did many theoretical

applications which I leant in my bachelor at NSU.

Second Week Second week of my internship program with standard bank is over. In this whole week I

worked with general banking department and also in the credit department. I have done

many important works in this week. In General banking department I did previous

week’s work – receiving check, check entry and also did some new work, like- writing

Pay Order, writing Fixed Deposit Voucher and helped our customer to open and fill up

the account opening form. At last part of the week I observed works of credit

department.

Work Done:

Standard Bank Banani branch is at road 11, busiest place at Banani. Everyday a huge

amount of people came there for banking transaction. There are lot of people came here

for opening fixed deposit account. When customers open a fixed deposit account, Bank

has to give a voucher, for that amount that the customers keep in that account. That

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 17

voucher has the same value that the customers keep in that account. Bank is bound to

give the money back when customers want to return that voucher. Normally Standard

Bank gives 9% to 12% interest on FDR. Interest rate is negotiable. So FDR voucher is

very important document. I had to write that voucher. First time my colleagues help me

to write that voucher. When I wrote 2-3 times I found that very easy task. But I had to

very careful because a small mistake can create a big problem. I also wrote pay order.

Pay order wirting is much similar to FDR voucher writing. Again I helped the customer

to fill up the account opening form. There are three major parts in account opening

form. They are-

Customer information detail

Transaction profile form

Know your customer (KYC) profile form.

All those forms are in compliance with Bangladesh bank rules and regulations. So

customers have filled those forms very carefully. Later I checked all the forms filled

properly or not. In the last part of the week I observe the credit department. I observe

how they work and they give the customers loans.

Learning and Achievement:

I learned how to write the pay order.

I learned how to write the FDR Voucher.

I learned how to open a bank account.

I learned the procedure to give the loan.

Observation/Reflection:

In the second week at Standard Bank I saw how to take loan, what the bank wants from

the customer when they give the loan. Later if I want establish my own business those

information I gather by observing the credit department will help me to take a loan.

Also I have done many important staffs in the general banking dept which will help me

in the future if I want to grow my career in the banking.

Notable incidents:

In my second week notable incidents did not happen that much. I found all the work

very easy. I did all the work very successfully.

Theoretical Application:

In my second week of my internship with Standard Bank I found FDR voucher and Pay

Order voucher which I saw in my book at courses in NSU. It helped me and made my job

easy.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 18

Third week Third week of my internship program at Standard Bank Ltd is over. In this third week I

did many important works. I sat on the front desk at the first part of the week and at the

last part of the week I sat with SEO of Banani Branch to help him with his work. At Front

desk I did previous weeks works. Like – receiving check, check entry, writing Pay Order,

writing Fixed Deposit Voucher and helped our customer to open and fill up the account

opening form. In the last part of the week when I sat with SEO of our Branch I checked

all the account opening form.

Work Done:

As I said I sat on the front desk at the first part of the week and did previous weeks

works. But at last part of the week from Tuesday to Thursday I worked with SEO. He

posted me at a desk beside him and told me to bring all the account opening form

(Current and Savings account), from the year 2013 to 2015. There are 10 files of savings

account and 6 files of current account. I had to check all the form in those files whether

the required documents for opening a bank account is available or not. Required

documents for savings account are:

Account holder’s photo

Account holder’s national ID/ Birth certificate/ passport photocopy

Nominee’s photo

Nominee’s national ID/ Birth certificate/ passport photocopy

And required documents for current account are:

Account holder’s photo

Account holder’s national ID/ Birth certificate/ passport photocopy

Tax identification number (TIN)

Updated Trade license.

I had to make a table:

Account Number

Account Name Required Documents

Phone Number Comments

I had to check all the account opening form and had to make a list like above table. If any

document is missing I had to mention that in required documents part. Comments part

remains blank.

Learning and Achievement:

Got more experienced in the front desk. Now it is easy for me to handle the front

desk alone.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 19

Learned what are the required documents for current account are.

Learned what are the required documents for Savings account are.

Observation/Reflection:

Most of the people who opened current account give the all the documents including the

trade license but the trade license have to be updated and have give that update copy to

Bank to active the bank account. It helps me to understand how to maintain a bank

account as account holder. Later when I will start my business and have to transaction

with bank at regular basis it will help me.

Notable incidents:

One of our colleagues came late at office and the SEO of banani branch asked him to

come at time or he will complain to Head office at HR dept. But that colleague said “Do

whatever you want to do, I will be late every day!!!”

Theoretical Application:

In the third week of my internship at Standard Bank I found Trade license and Tax

identification number which I learnt in my bachelor at NSU and I saw real paper

documents of Trade license and Tax identification number.

Forth week Forth week of my internship program at Standard Bank Ltd is over. In this forth week I

worked with SEO of Banani branch. He taught me how to check the account opening

from and what are required documents for a bank account and he also teach me

necessary part that should be filled up by the bank in the account opening form. At first

three days of this week I work with account opening, find out those document missing

in the form. At last two days I called all the account holders to provide those necessary

documents to maintain a bank account.

Work Done:

At the first part of the week I worked with account opening form which I started last

week. I finished checking all the account form at Tuesday. I had to make a list like this.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 20

Account Number

Account Name Required Documents

Phone Number Comments

So when I finished checking all the account opening form I found a big list of account

holders who didn’t give all the documents. I started calling them one by one from

Wednesday. When called an account holder I had to speak very politely. At first I have

to introduce myself that “I am from standard bank Banani Branch”. Then asked them to

give the required documents to bank because Bangladesh Bank sent us a circular to

have all the necessary documents of every account holder. I also had to write a comment

after finishing with every account holder.

Learning and Achievement:

Learned how to check all the account opening form.

Learned how to fill up the bank part of the account opening form.

Learned how to talk with the clients properly and politely.

Observation/Reflection:

I observe every account holder’s when I talked to them; most of the people didn’t bother

about missing documents. They are not interested to give those documents. Some are

promised to give documents but I think they will not going to provide those. As

Bangladesh bank asked us to maintain all documents we had to call them but giving the

document is not our headache.

Notable incidents:

When I started calling every client, the first call I made was a joint account and that was

Mr. Rabby. I called him and asked him for document. After that he told me “look behind

and take that document from me”. I looked behind and that was my colleague Rabby

Bhai. Everyone was laughing including me to saw that incident.

Theoretical Application:

In the third week of my internship at Standard Bank I didn’t found any theoretical

application.

Fifth Week In my fifth week of my internship program at Standard Bank Ltd, I have done many

important works. In my first few weeks I worked at front desk, and then worked in

credit department. In this fifth week I got different experience at cash counter. In this

first part of the week I worked at cash counter. One of my colleagues asked me to count

money for him. As the cash counter was very busy that day, I have chance to work with

them. I can say cash counter is the busiest part of the bank and employees have to work

very sincerely there.

Work done:

People came to cash counter for deposit the money and withdraw money. There are

another work that is done by cash counter is to encashment the pay order. Cash counter

also sell price bonds. In cash counter people can pay electricity, gas, telephone and

utility bill also. People have to pay the credit card bill in the cash counter. In this first

part of the week I worked in the cash counter. At first day help them to count money

with machine. Then I start taking deposit. Customer gives us a deposit slip and money.

In deposit slip they have to mention the amount of deposit in number and words also.

My colleagues have to check that amount very carefully and take that money from the

client and count that very carefully. A small mistake can create a big problem. They

asked me to count money for them. Again when people came to withdraw the money

from account I had to get money from specific drawer and count money that my

colleagues asked me to give them. From the next day, I start taking the utility bills. Most

common bill that customer pay is, electricity bill. When customers want to pay bill they

have to give bill copy and the money. My job was to take that copy and the money, count

that money and give seal to the bill copy and cut the bank copy and give the customer

copy back to the customers. It was a very important work for me; I have to work very

carefully for that. At the last part of the week I had to give letters to the account holders

who didn’t give the necessary documents to maintain an account. I have to type a letter

requesting them to give those documents that are required and missing in their files.

Learning and Achievement:

Learnt how to take deposit from the customers

Learnt how to take cash checks.

Learnt how encashment the pay order.

Learnt how to take utility bills.

Observation/Reflection:

I observe all the employee of cash counter is very serious with their work. They work

very carefully. Don’t like any mistake. Once I made a mistake they get very serious about

that mistake and told me to solve that as early as possible. By observing their work I

come to know that maintaining the cash counter is not an easy job as it looks like.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 22

Notable incidents:

At Thursday one of our big client Nagar Homes deposited a big amount about 10 crore

taka. My job was then is to count those money. After counting I have to remove other

bank’s paper from that bundle and tag Standard Bank seal to every bundle. By doing

that, I tear two note of thousand taka in two pieces. One of my colleagues told me to

note worry about that. Later I saw him joining those notes with a paper tape very

carefully. Again he showed me those notes but couldn’t find where that notes were tear.

Theoretical Application:

In this week I didn’t find any theoretical applications. But I have read about those things

in the book that I worked in this week.

Sixth Week In my sixth week of internship at Standard Bank Limited, I have worked almost all the

section of the bank. At the first day of the bank I worked in cash counter. At second day

and third day I helped front desk. And forth day I observed the credit department and

also help the foreign exchange. Sixth week of my internship was pretty good. I had the

opportunity to work with all department of the bank and my experience was fantastic.

Now I am familiar with all department of Standard Bank Limited Banani branch.

Work done:

At the first day of my sixth week I worked in cash counter. Like previous week I helped

them I helped them to collect the utility bills and also helped them to count money. I

also checked notes weather they are fake or not in the UV Money detector. When an

original note placed under the Ultra Violate light glitters of note will be visible. Fake

note doesn’t have any glitter, it shows nothing. New notes of taka 500 and 1000 can be

checked under the UV Money detector. But old taka 500 notes cannot be checked with

that machine, it is checked with the hand of cashier. At second and third day of this

week I worked in front desk. Like previous I collect the all the accounts check, gave

them seal, register the check, received all the letters, helped people to open the account,

check all the account form etc. At forth week of my internship I worked in the credit

department. In credit department I didn’t find any work except observing them. I

observe two colleagues whom with I worked. They showed me some report of different

credit applier organization. I read all the reports very carefully. At fifth day I worked

with foreign exchange department. I helped them sending letters at the different foreign

bank. When a company export or import different goods from different parts of the

world they have to ensure that importer will give them the money. In export import

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 23

business banks work as the middle party of the transaction. Importer’s bank gives the

confirmation letter to the exporter’s bank about availability of the money of importer’s

bank account. I learned how to send those letters to the exporter’s bank. I also received

all the letters from different banks of different parts of the worlds. Those letters are

named different organizations which have account in our branch. Those letters confirm

us about the import process and knowing the monetary value of the import. We have to

confirm the foreign bank about the availability of importers account.

Learning and Achievement:

Learnt how to check notes under UV Money detector.

Learnt how to make reports for a big amount loan.

Learnt how to give the formal letters to the foreign bank.

Observation/Reflection:

In this week I learnt a lot about banking process. I observed them very carefully. Later if

I want to create my own business those experience will work. Mainly when I worked at

the credit department, I saw many report for loan, how they apply for the loan, what are

procedure for loan. Again if I want do export-import business, the experience foreign

exchange department will work.

Notable incidents:

One of the notable incidents was the office culture. Everyone was very serious and

punctual about the office timing and schedules and no one came late or going early

before the office hour ends. The overall office environment was very friendly and I did

not find any kinds of interdepartmental conflicts so far in the Office.

Theoretical Application:

In this week I have learnt many thing most of them are related to my bachelor at NSU.

Mainly when I worked at foraign exchange department I found many similarities which

I learnt in my International business course. Again when I read all the reports of the

credit department I found similarities with MGT 368(Entrepreneurship Business)

reports.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 24

Seventh Week Seventh week of my internship at Standard Bank Ltd is complete; I have done many

important works in this week. In this week I worked with in-charge of general banking

department. At the last part of the week, I worked cash counter. It was a very successful

week. I learnt many new things in this week.

Work done:

At first part of the week I worked with in-charge of general banking. They asked me to

help him. He gave me list of zero balance account. Asked me to find each and every

account’s transaction period. For this I need to learn the software that the bank uses for

everything- like recording every transaction, keeping the customer profile etc. At first

he learnt me how find transaction dates. It was a very easy work, but the list was huge. I

have hove to work very carefully because it was a very sensitive work. Later I have to

Block those account that stopped transaction before 2014. It was a big responsibility for

me. I have done this work very carefully and attentively. At the last part of the week I

worked in cash counter. I this week I took all kinds of utility bills.

Learning and Achievement:

Learnt how to use the banking software.

Learnt how to find the transaction profile.

Learnt how to Block account in the banking software.

Observation/Reflection:

As I said before, I this week I worked with in-charge of general banking department. I

observe him very carefully. I find that the work he had to done is very important. He had

to observe all employee of the general banking department. He have to talk with

customers, had to ask them what they need. Had to authorize every transaction that

complete the bank. It’s a great work of responsibilities. I observe him very carefully.

Later if I focus my future in banking, it will help.

Notable incidents:

As the Eid-ul-Fitr is coming, all new notes reach at our branch. All employees are taking

new notes and like there is a touch of Eid and new notes. I find that people need new

notes beside new cloth. In-charge of general banking department asked me to take new

notes if I want.

Theoretical Application:

At my seventh week at Standard Bank Ltd, I worked with banking software. So I didn’t

find any theoretical application in this works.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 25

Eighth Week Eighth week of my internship at standard bank is over. In this week, I worked on front

desk. Like my first week, I helped the client to open bank account, received accounts

payable checks and prepared them for clearing. Most important work that I have done

was helping our client to get the remittance. At the last part of the week I worked in

cash counter. As this was the last week before Eid vacation, bank was full of client and I

spent the busiest week at my internship.

Work done:

At the eighth week of my internship program, I worked in front desk. Most important

work that I have done in this week was helping the clients to get the remittance.

Generally they use MoneyGram and Xpress Money and there are another way to get

remittance from UK and USA only which is directly sent by SBL both in USA and UK.

From this transaction process, I need to check bank’s internal software ‘Staler’. When a

person sent money from UK or USA, he or she gets a secret number. He or she need to

send that number to the receiver of that money. When money receiver comes to receive

the money he needs to bring that number and National ID photocopy to get the money.

My job was checking that code in our software, asking the sender name, receiver name

and the amount. I also help the clients to fill the remittance form. Most popular money

sending way is MoneyGram and Xpress Money. People can sent money from anywhere

in the world by using that process. They use different software for that process. When

sender sent money to the receiver, sender get a code and mentioned the exactly figure

of the money after converting it to Taka. Receiver need to bring the national ID and the

code. Also receiver should aware about the amount that sender sent. My job was filling

the money withdrawal form and checking the code, sender name, country, receiver

name and amount in the software. At the last part of the week, I had to work in the cash

counter. Like previous I collect utility bills, checked all the notes.

Learning and Achievement:

Learnt how to deal with remittance receiver.

Learnt how to use remittance software.

Learnt how to use MoneyGram and Xpress Money Software.

Observation/Reflection:

In this week, I worked in front desk with two lady colleagues. They are my mentors and

they are always ready to teach me. I observe them very carefully. I found they are the

busiest person in that bank. They have deal with clients almost all the time. When I

looked at them and their work I found bank job is not that much easy that people think.

They have to work hard and also sincere on their work. Because a little mistake can

cause a big problem.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 26

Notable incidents:

It was the last week before Eid-ul-fitr, so the bank was full of clients. People have to

stand in line for transaction. In this week I found many people standing in line and

quarrelling. Because they had to stand in line for a long time. Even cashier also got

angry sometimes after dealing with different types of customers.

Theoretical Application:

At my eighth week at Standard Bank Ltd, I did basic banking task. So I didn’t find any

theoretical application in this works.

Ninth week I have finished ninth week of my internship at Standard Bank Limited. It was the first

week after eid vacation. Most of the employee was in leave. They extended their

vacation. Also there were few customers in the bank as most of the people were out of

town. Work load was less. In this week in sent the all the accounts holders Balance

Confirmation Letter.

Work done:

As this was the first week after eid vacation, work load was less. So I get the time to

send the account holders letter knowing the account balance which is called the Balance

Confirmation Letter. Standard Bank Ltd. send balance confirmation letter to their

accounts holders in every six month at the end of their transaction period. Balance

confirmation letter include account numbers, account balance in sum and words, and

requesting the account holders to confirm the correctness of the balance within 15 days.

There are another part at the below of the letter which was for account holders for

confirming the balance. Account holder have to mention their mobile number, email

address and have to give signature for confirming the balance is correct. I had to log in

the internal banking software; there is option for Balance Confirmation Letter in that

software had to click that option. After clicking that I find different type of accounts like-

Current, Saving and SND (Short Note Deposit). I clicked in the current and clicked print,

that’s all. All the letters for balance confirmation for current account is ready. I did the

same steps for saving and SND accounts. Then I had to seal those in the window

envelope and give to those to the courier service.

Learning and Achievement:

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 27

Learnt what SND account is and what are the processes of that type of accounts.

Learnt how to send balance confirmation letter.

Observation/Reflection:

As this is the first week after eid vacation, most of the employees are out of town. They

are enjoying a good time after hard work. My work load was less. So I sent all the

account holders balance confirmation letter. I asked my colleague about the previous

response of the account holders. She told me the response was very low. Then I came to

know that this balance confirmation letter is just a formality.

Notable incidents:

At the first day after vacation, when I reached at the bank I found few employees came

in the bank and also found few customers in the bank. That was a notable incident for

me.

Theoretical Application:

At the ninth week of my internship at Standard Bank Ltd. I didn’t do anything important.

So I didn’t find any theoretical application in this works.

Tenth Week Tenth week of my internship program at Standard Bank Ltd is over. In this week I have

done many important works. This week worked with in-charge of General Banking

department. I had good experience working with him.

Work done:

I had to analyze the Transaction Profile (TP) form of the account holders. The form

consists of the number of monthly transaction, highest transaction amount for each

transaction and total monthly amount of deposit and withdrawal. Based on those data, I

had to figure out whether the transaction profile (TP) was high in the Stelar or not.

Stelar is the software that Standard Bank Ltd uses. I also checked out whether the

amount of Transaction Profile (TP) was mismatched with the amount written in the

Stelar or not.

Learning and Achievement:

Get a proper idea about the Transaction Profile (TP) forms (Both personal and

institutional) of account holders.

Standard bank Limited | Appendix 28

Learn how to analyze Transaction Profile (TP) through their software.

Get a brief idea about their software named Stelar.

Learn how to find out whether the TP was found high, low or mismatched with

the Stelar as per transaction.

Observation/Reflection:

To analyze the TP form was totally new and complex task for me. Firstly, I was very

confused what to write because I had to compare the amount of the TP with so many

things in the Stelar. I was very grateful to the Executive Officer Mr. Nafi who helped me

a lot to analyze the TP form and I had successfully done the task.

Notable incidents:

This week we have celebrated two birthdays of our two officers. Delicious cakes were

brought to celebrate the occasions. Those two Birthday parties were completely new

experience for me as I never experienced such birthday parties in workplace.

Theoretical Application:

At my eighth week at Standard Bank Ltd, I did basic banking task. So I didn’t find any

theoretical application in this works.
