Assignment #1: Interpretative Material Evaluation DUE: January 22, 2013 by 2pm In a public art museum, our encounter with a work of art or our experience of an installation / exhibition is often mediated or facilitated by a number of interpretative strategies developed with the visitor in mind. These include tombstone or extended labels, introductory or summary panel texts, wall quotes, brochures, audio-visual materials or hands-on-activities, among others. This assignment is designed for students to consider the display of the works of art in a particular permanent collection gallery and become aware of the interpretative material included. They will be asked to reflect on its intended use and audience, as well as effectiveness as it relates to the works of art; and articulate a written response by answering a series of questions outlined in the assignment handout. Here is a list of AGO galleries. Please select ONE from the list below and complete the assignment. *This assignment is to be completed on site at the AGO during the class visit and handed in by the end of the visit (2 pm).
