ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION-Definition of environmental pollution-

‘’Environmental pollution is the contamination of the physical and biological components of the earth /atmosphere system to such an extent that normal environmental processes are adversely affected’’

Definition of pollution-

‘’Pollution is the addition of any substance or form of energy exp. Heat, sound, radioactivity to the environment at a rate faster than the environment can accommodate it by dispersion, breakdown, recycling or storage in same harmless form’’

TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION -There are three major types of environmental pollution :-

1.Air pollution – Some of most important air pollutants are sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, volatile organic compounds (VOL’S) and air borne particles with radioactive pollutants among the most destructive ones specially produced by nuclear explosions.

2. Water pollution- water pollutants include insecticides and herbicides, food processing waste, pollutants from live stock operation, volatile organic compounds(voc’s) heavy metals, chemical waste and others.

Page 4: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

3. Soil pollution- some soil pollutants are hydrocarbons, solvents and heavy metals.

SOURCES OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION-1. Industry- a. power generating plants

b. petroleum refineries

c. petrochemical plants

d. production and distribution of fossil fuels

e. other manufacturing facilities

2. Transport – a. road transport

b. shipping industry

c. aircraft

EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION ON HUMANS , ANIMALS AND TREES, PLANTS-

A.Effect of air pollution on humans - a.Reduced long functioning

b.irritation of eyes, nose, mouth and threat

c. asthma attacks

d. reduced energy levels

e. increased respiratory disease such as bronchitis

f. headache and dizziness

B. Effect of water pollution on humans-

Page 6: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

a. water borne diseases caused by polluted drinking water:-

1. Typhoid

2. Amoebiasis

3. Giardiasis

4. Hookworm

b. water borne diseases caused by beach water- 1. Rashes, ear ache,

2. respiratory inflations

3. diarrhea, vomiting and stomach aches

C. Effect of soil contamination on humans-

a. causes neuro muscular blockage as well as depression of the control nervous system.

b. cause headache, eye irritation, skin rash, nausea

Page 7: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

c. lead in soil is especially hazardous for young children causing developmental damage to the brain.

D. Effect of air pollution on animals-

a. acid rain formed in the air destroys fish life in lakes and streams.

b. excessive ultra violet radiation coming from the sun through the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere which is eroded by some air pollutants may cause skin cancer in wildlife.

c. ozone in the lower atmosphere may damage long tissues of animals.

E. Effect of water pollution on animals-

a. nutrient pollution (nitrogen, phosphates) causes overgrowth of toxic algae eaten by other aquatic animals and may cause death:

Page 8: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

nutrient pollution can cause outbreaks of fish diseases.

b. chemical contamination can cause declines in frog diversity and tadpole mass.

c. persistent organic pollutants (pop’s) may cause declines, deformities and death of fish life.

F. Effect of soil contamination on animals-

a. after metabolism of microorganisms and arthropods in a given soil environment this may destroy some layers of the primary food chain and thus have a negative effect on predator species. animal

b. small life forms may consume harmful chemicals which may then be passed up the food chain to larger animals : this may lead to

Page 9: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

increased mortality rates and even animal extinction.

G. Effect of air pollution on trees and plants-

a. acid rain can kill trees, destroy the leaves of plants can infiltrate soil by making it unsuitable for purposes of nutrition and habitation.

b. ozone holes in the upper atmosphere can allow excessive ultra violet radiation from the sun to enter the earth causing damage to trees and plants.

H. Effect of water pollution on trees and plants-

a. plants may be killed by too much sodium chloride (ordinary salt) in water.

b. plants may be killed by mud from construction sites .c. plants may be killed by herbicides in water:

Page 10: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

herbicides are chemicals which are most harmful to plants.

I. Effect of soil contamination on trees and plants- a. may alter plant metabolism and reduce crop gills.

b. trees and plants may absorb soil contaminants and loss them upto the food chain.

HOW TO CONTROL ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION-Government have to do something to prevent environment from different pollutions. Environmental pollution can be controlled by saving trees , to keep our surroundings neat and clean, factories are situated at that place where people donot live and there are some

Page 11: Assignment of Environmental Pollution (2)

other measures by which environmental pollution can be controlled.
