Our Future

In December 2012, the University Council approved a new Strategic Plan setting out a distinctive vision and position for the University.

The new Plan gives expression to the Griffith 2020 agenda and to the vision to further develop Griffith as a university of influence.

The Strategic Plan sets out five overarching goals to guide future activity:

To provide an excellent educational experience to attract and retain students who, regardless of

their background, will succeed at university and become graduates of influence.

To continuously improve our research performance and, through our research, deliver social

dividends.

To attract and retain excellent staff who, through their teaching, research and professional

support, will positively contribute to Griffith's development as a university of influence.

To be a sustainable university.

one of Australia’s most Asian-engaged universities.

The Griffith 2020 strategy is characterised by:

Placing students at the centre of our educational activities to ensure that our programs,

Message from the Vice Chancellor

Established in 1971, Griffith University opened its doors at Nathan in 1975 to 451 students. In just over forty years, we have come to be regarded as one of Australia’s most innovative tertiary institutions and one of the most influential universities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Today, Griffith University ranks in the top five per cent of universities worldwide. It is Australia’s ninth largest higher education provider, with more than 43,000 students across five campuses in the Brisbane-Gold Coast region of South East Queensland.

Drawing on the University’s founding strengths and focus on responsible leadership, sustainability and the Asia-Pacific region, Griffith’s teaching and research addresses many of tomorrow’s challenges. Griffith was the first Australian university to offer degrees in areas of relevance to today’s society, such as environmental science and Asian studies.

Now a comprehensive, research intensive university, Griffith offers a full suite of undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees in the disciplines of business and government, criminology and law, education, engineering and information technology, environment, health, humanities, languages and linguistics, music, planning and architecture, science and aviation, and visual and creative arts. With $320 million in development being unveiled between 2013 and 2016, Griffith is one of Australia’s fastest growing universities.

“Griffith University plans to continue to respond creatively to the considerable challenges of our time, whether it is building the health workforce of the future, collaborating on research on national security, or providing solutions for sustainable business practice. I encourage you to join us on the journey.”

Academic Plan 2013-2017: Transforming the Student Experience

We are entering a very exciting but challenging time in higher education. It will be a time of uncertainty and the only thing we can be certain of is that things will not be the same. Griffith University aims to embrace these changes and to position ourselves to be ahead of the game. This will prove to be challenging for staff who will need to work in new ways and accept that students need and expect a different type of education.

Although the majority of our students will still attend campus for a good proportion of their teaching, we will see increasing amounts of their learning activities being conducted off-campus through online teaching. Indeed an increasing number of students will study fully online.

We will also see changes to the traditional two-semester teaching model, with an increasing number of our programs being offered in intensive and flexible time periods. These changes are essential if we are to continue to attract high-quality students to Griffith.

This presents many challenges for us, but we will need to adapt in order to remain competitive as a university. We will need to employ staff who have strong expertise in these new ways of teaching, and also provide high-quality professional development to enable existing academic staff to enhance their skills in these areas.

Griffith is a wonderful place to work and we will aim to keep it that way. We want to continue to attract excellent staff and to retain and support them to achieve their potential while recognising that many traditional practices will need to adapt. Griffith has many wonderful teachers and we need to celebrate their successes in learning and teaching, as well as in research.

The Academic Plan 2013-2017 outlines the ways in which Griffith aims to transform the student experience, while paying particular attention to the quality of teaching, and to academic standards. We also need to recognise that our students come from diverse backgrounds and we must ensure that we provide them with the support that they need in order to succeed. Our student success and retention strategy will be one of the most important elements of academic planning during this next phase. Interestingly, we can make use of new approaches such as learning analytics in order to identify students who are at risk of academic difficulties or attrition, and we can intervene early to provide learning assistance.

This plan is of relevance to all areas of the University given that all academic and professional staff in some way play an important part in ensuring that our students have the best possible university experience and will succeed in becoming graduates of influence in the future.

Griffith Research Plan 2013-2017

The Vision of Griffith University is to be one of the most influential universities in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. We will achieve this vision through delivery on our mission “to engage in outstanding scholarship that makes a major contribution to society and to produce ground breaking research”. In pursuit of that mission, the University is committed to:

Rigorous standards of scholarship

Positively influencing our communities through our teaching, research and scholarly activities

Recognising our location in Asia and deepening our engagement with the region

Bringing disciplines together to address the key issues of our time

Promoting the respect of individual rights and ethical standards

Participatory decision-making and problem solving

Contributing to a robust, equitable and environmentally sustainable society

Recognising and valuing diversity

Recognising the unique place of First Peoples in Australian history and culture and enabling their

continued contribution to the nation.

The capacity to meet these commitments is heavily invested in the strength and quality of the research fabric of the University, and this Research Plan identifies the goals, targets and strategies through which we will deliver research of high standard and relevance.

The University now appears in the top 500 in all major rankings of the world’s universities, is performing consistently as one of the top ten Australian universities in publication outputs and is just outside the top ten in research income. ERA2012 resulted in a national ranking (number of Fields of Research) at the broad classification level of 11th, but indicated a greater spread of quality at the finer level of research classification. Consolidating strengths while at the same time lifting the average quality of research across the whole research portfolio remain key themes of the Research Plan 2013-2017. In execution of the Plan, the University seeks to manage the fine balance between the need for long-term strategic planning and development, and the requirement to be responsive to the more proximate drivers of research assessment and accountability.

The University’s 2011-2013 Research Plan carried a key message: “research and research training of the highest quality is an integral part of the character of all top universities, and Griffith is committed to supporting staff, students and stakeholders in achieving that outcome for the communities we serve”. This message resonates even more strongly for the term of the current Plan and remains a central commitment for Griffith University.

Griffith University in the Asian Century

In August 2012, a Committee of Review was established to consider Griffith University’s role in the Asian Century. Chaired by Professor Russell Trood, former Senator and expert in international relations, the committee also included representation from across the University who consulted our major stakeholders and considered submissions from our staff.

The Trood Report provided an audit of our current Asia-engagement activities, described the importance of recognising our existing internationalisation activity and made a number of recommendations to galvanise Griffith University’s influence in Asia.

This document outlines key strategies required to embed Goal 5 of the Griffith University Strategic Plan – 2013-2017:

To enhance our engagement with the Asia–Pacific region and to consolidate our reputation as one of Australia’s most Asia-engaged universities.
